    Applied Metaheuristic Computing

For decades, Applied Metaheuristic Computing (AMC) has been a prevailing optimization technique for tackling perplexing engineering and business problems, such as scheduling, routing, ordering, bin packing, assignment, facility layout planning, among others. This is partly because the classic exact methods are constrained with prior assumptions, and partly due to the heuristics being problem-dependent and lacking generalization. AMC, on the contrary, guides the course of low-level heuristics to search beyond the local optimality, which impairs the capability of traditional computation methods. This topic series has collected quality papers proposing cutting-edge methodology and innovative applications which drive the advances of AMC

This thesis was conducted within the framework of SMART project funded by a European program, Interreg POCTEFA. The project aims to support small and medium-sized companies to increase their competitiveness in the context of Industry 4.0 by developing intelligent monitoring tools for autonomous system health management. To do so, in this work, we propose efficient data-driven algorithms for prognostics and health management of industrial systems. The first contribution consists of the construction of a new robust health indicator that allows clearly separating different fault states of a wide range of systems’ critical components. This health indicator is also efficient when considering multiples monitoring parameters under various operating conditions. Next, the second contribution addresses the challenges posed by online diagnostics of unknown fault types in dynamic systems, particularly the detection, localization, and identification of the robot axes drifts origin when these drifts have not been learned before. For this purpose, a new online diagnostics methodology based on information fusion from direct and indirect monitoring techniques is proposed. It uses the direct monitoring way to instantaneously update the indirect monitoring model and diagnose online the origin of new faults. Finally, the last contribution deals with the prognostics issue of systems failure in a controlled industrial process that can lead to negative impacts in long-term predictions. To remedy this problem, we developed a new adaptive prognostics approach based on the combination of multiple machine learning predictions in different time horizons. The proposed approach allows capturing the degradation trend in long-term while considering the state changes in short-term caused by the controller activities, which allows improving the accuracy of prognostics results. The performances of the approaches proposed in this thesis were investigated on different real case studies representing the demonstrators of the thesis partners

An economic development model analyzes the adoption of alternative strategy capable of leveraging the economy, based essentially on RES. The combination of wind turbine, PV installation with new technology battery energy storage, DSM network and RES forecasting algorithms maximizes RES integration in isolated islands. An innovative model of power system (PS) imbalances is presented, which aims to capture various features of the stochastic behavior of imbalances and to reduce in average reserve requirements and PS risk. Deep learning techniques for medium-term wind speed and solar irradiance forecasting are presented, using for first time a specific cloud index. Scalability-replicability of the FLEXITRANSTORE technology innovations integrates hardware-software solutions in all areas of the transmission system and the wholesale markets, promoting increased RES. A deep learning and GIS approach are combined for the optimal positioning of wave energy converters. An innovative methodology to hybridize battery-based energy storage using supercapacitors for smoother power profile, a new control scheme and battery degradation mechanism and their economic viability are presented. An innovative module-level photovoltaic (PV) architecture in parallel configuration is introduced maximizing power extraction under partial shading. A new method for detecting demagnetization faults in axial flux permanent magnet synchronous wind generators is presented. The stochastic operating temperature (OT) optimization integrated with Markov Chain simulation ascertains a more accurate OT for guiding the coal gasification practice

Developing Efficient and Effective Intrusion Detection System using Evolutionary Computation

The internet and computer networks have become an essential tool in distributed computing organisations especially because they enable the collaboration between components of heterogeneous systems. The efficiency and flexibility of online services have attracted many applications, but as they have grown in popularity so have the numbers of attacks on them. Thus, security teams must deal with numerous threats where the threat landscape is continuously evolving. The traditional security solutions are by no means enough to create a secure environment, intrusion detection systems (IDSs), which observe system works and detect intrusions, are usually utilised to complement other defence techniques. However, threats are becoming more sophisticated, with attackers using new attack methods or modifying existing ones. Furthermore, building an effective and efficient IDS is a challenging research problem due to the environment resource restrictions and its constant evolution. To mitigate these problems, we propose to use machine learning techniques to assist with the IDS building effort. In this thesis, Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms are empirically investigated for synthesising intrusion detection programs. EC can construct programs for raising intrusion alerts automatically. One novel proposed approach, i.e. Cartesian Genetic Programming, has proved particularly effective. We also used an ensemble-learning paradigm, in which EC algorithms were used as a meta-learning method to produce detectors. The latter is more fully worked out than the former and has proved a significant success. An efficient IDS should always take into account the resource restrictions of the deployed systems. Memory usage and processing speed are critical requirements. We apply a multi-objective approach to find trade-offs among intrusion detection capability and resource consumption of programs and optimise these objectives simultaneously. High complexity and the large size of detectors are identified as general issues with the current approaches. The multi-objective approach is used to evolve Pareto fronts for detectors that aim to maintain the simplicity of the generated patterns. We also investigate the potential application of these algorithms to detect unknown attacks
