    DECISION SUPPORT MODEL IN FAILURE-BASED COMPUTERIZED MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM INDUSTRIES

    Maintenance decision support system is crucial to ensure maintainability and reliability of equipments in production lines. This thesis investigates a few decision support models to aid maintenance management activities in small and medium industries. In order to improve the reliability of resources in production lines, this study introduces a conceptual framework to be used in failure-based maintenance. Maintenance strategies are identified using the Decision-Making Grid model, based on two important factors, including the machines’ downtimes and their frequency of failures. The machines are categorized into three downtime criterions and frequency of failures, which are high, medium and low. This research derived a formula based on maintenance cost, to re-position the machines prior to Decision-Making Grid analysis. Subsequently, the formula on clustering analysis in the Decision-Making Grid model is improved to solve multiple-criteria problem. This research work also introduced a formula to estimate contractor’s response and repair time. The estimates are used as input parameters in the Analytical Hierarchy Process model. The decisions were synthesized using models based on the contractors’ technical skills such as experience in maintenance, skill to diagnose machines and ability to take prompt action during troubleshooting activities. Another important criteria considered in the Analytical Hierarchy Process is the business principles of the contractors, which includes the maintenance quality, tools, equipments and enthusiasm in problem-solving. The raw data collected through observation, interviews and surveys in the case studies to understand some risk factors in small and medium food processing industries. The risk factors are analysed with the Ishikawa Fishbone diagram to reveal delay time in machinery maintenance. The experimental studies are conducted using maintenance records in food processing industries. The Decision Making Grid model can detect the top ten worst production machines on the production lines. The Analytical Hierarchy Process model is used to rank the contractors and their best maintenance practice. This research recommends displaying the results on the production’s indicator boards and implements the strategies on the production shop floor. The proposed models can be used by decision makers to identify maintenance strategies and enhance competitiveness among contractors in failure-based maintenance. The models can be programmed as decision support sub-procedures in computerized maintenance management systems

    A description of the total Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) is presented. The description of the hardware is given in a top down format, the lowest level of which is a functional description of each candidate implementation. For each candidate implementation, both its advantages and disadvantages are presented. From this knowledge, it was suggested where expert systems could be used in the diagnosis and control of specific portions of the ECLSS. A process to determine if expert systems are applicable and how to select the expert system is also presented. The consideration of possible problems or inconsistencies in the knowledge or workings in the subsystems is described

    Power-by-the-hour is a performance based offering for delivering outstanding service to operators of civil aviation aircraft. Operators need to guarantee to minimise downtime, reduce service cost and ensure value for money which requires an innovative advanced technology for predictive maintenance. Predictability, availability and reliability of the engine offers better service for operators, and the need to estimate the expected component failure prior to failure occurrence requires a proactive approach to predict the remaining useful life of components within an assembly. This research offers a framework for component remaining useful life prediction using assembly level data. The thesis presents a critical analysis on literature identifying the Weibull method, statistical technique and data-driven methodology relating to remaining useful life prediction, which are used in this research. The AS-IS practice captures relevant information based on the investigation conducted in the aerospace industry. The analysis of maintenance cycles relates to the examination of high-level events for engine availability, whereby more communications with industry showcase a through-life performance timeline visualisation. Overhaul sequence and activities are presented to gain insights of the timeline visualisation. The thesis covers the framework development and application to gas turbine single stage assembly, repair and replacement of components in single stage assembly, and multiple stage assembly. The framework is demonstrated in aerospace engines and power generation engines. The framework developed enables and supports domain experts to quickly respond to, and prepare for maintenance and on-time delivery of spare parts. The results of the framework show the probability of failure based on a pair of error values using the corresponding Scale and Shape parameters. The probability of failure is transformed into the remaining useful life depicting a typical Weibull distribution. The resulting Weibull curves developed with three scenarios of the case shows there are components renewals, therefore, the remaining useful life of the components are established. The framework is validated and verified through a case study with three scenarios and also through expert judgement

    There is a high demand and interest in considering the social and environmental effects of the component’s lifespan. Aircraft are one of the most high-priced businesses that require the highest reliability and safety constraints. The complexity of aircraft systems designs also has advanced rapidly in the last decade. Consequently, fault detection, diagnosis and modification/ repair procedures are becoming more challenging. The presence of a fault within an aircraft system can result in changes to system performances and cause operational downtime or accidents in a worst-case scenario. The CBM method that predicts the state of the equipment based on data collected is widely used in aircraft MROs. CBM uses diagnostics and prognostics models to make decisions on appropriate maintenance actions based on the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of the components. The aircraft fuel system is a crucial system of aircraft, even a minor failure in the fuel system can affect the aircraft's safety greatly. A failure in the fuel system that impacts the ability to deliver fuel to the engine will have an immediate effect on system performance and safety. There are very few diagnostic systems that monitor the health of the fuel system and even fewer that can contain detected faults. The fuel system is crucial for the operation of the aircraft, in case of failure, the fuel in the aircraft will become unusable/unavailable to reach the destination. It is necessary to develop fault detection of the aircraft fuel system. The future aircraft fuel system must have the function of fault detection. Through the information of sensors and Machine Learning Techniques, the aircraft fuel system’s fault type can be detected in a timely manner.
