    Get PDF
The adequate assessment of key apparatus conditions is a hot topic in all branches of industry. Various online and offline diagnostic methods are widely applied to provide early detections of any abnormality in exploitation. Furthermore, different sensors may also be applied to capture selected physical quantities that may be used to indicate the type of potential fault. The essential steps of the signal analysis regarding the technical condition assessment process may be listed as: signal measurement (using relevant sensors), processing, modelling, and classification. In the Special Issue entitled “Advances in Sensors and Sensing for Technical Condition Assessment and NDT”, we present the latest research in various areas of technology

Integration of the environmental management aspect in the optimization of the design and planning of energy systems

    Get PDF
The increasing concerns regarding the environmental pollution derived from anthropogenic activities, such as the use of fossil fuels for power generation, has driven many interested parties to seek different alternatives, e.g. use of renewable energy sources, use of “cleaner” fuels and use of more effective technologies, in order to minimize and control the quantity of emissions that are produced during the life cycle of conventional energy sources. In addition to these alternatives, the use of an integrated procedure in which the environmental aspect will be taken into account during the design and planning of energy systems could provide a basis on which emissions reduction will be dealt with a life cycle approach. The work presented in this paper focuses on the examination of the possibilities of integrating the environmental aspects in the preliminary phase of the conventional design and planning of energy systems in conjunction with other parameters, such as financial cost, availability, capacity, location, etc. The integration of the environmental parameter to the design is carried out within a context where Eco-design concepts are applied. Due to the multi-parameter nature of the design procedure, the tools that are used are Life Cycle Analysis and Multi-criteria Analysis. The proposed optimization model examines and identifies optimum available options of the use of different energy sources and technologies for the production of electricity and/or heat by minimizing both the financial cost and the environmental impacts, with regard to a multiple objective optimization subject to a set of specific constraints. Implementation of the proposed model in the form of a case study for the island of Rhodes in Greece revealed that an optimized solution both cost and environmental-wise, would be an almost balanced participation of renewables and non-renewable energy sources in the energy mix

Owing to the continuous growth in the world\u27s energy demand, the problems of energy consumption, greenhouse gas emission, and environmental pollution have become increasingly prominent. The distributed energy resource (DER) system is a high-efficiency energy system that can promote energy-saving and decrease carbon emissions. the focus of this research is on the equipment maintenance and system optimization of DER. In the maintenance optimization stage, a maintenance priority assessment method is used to allocate maintenance management resources based on the assessment results to help managers develop reasonable maintenance strategies and reduce maintenance costs. In the system design optimization stage, the capacity and operation strategy of the system is optimized for the energy demand of users to achieve the purpose of improving economic benefits and promoting energy saving and emission reduction.北九州市立大

Performance Study of Hybrid Spread Spectrum Techniques

    Get PDF
This thesis focuses on the performance analysis of hybrid direct sequence/slow frequency hopping (DS/SFH) and hybrid direct sequence/fast frequency hopping (DS/FFH) systems under multi-user interference and Rayleigh fading. First, we analyze the performance of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS), slow frequency hopping (SFH) and fast frequency hopping (FFH) systems for varying processing gains under interference environment assuming equal bandwidth constraint with Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation and synchronous system. After thorough literature survey, we show that hybrid DS/FFH systems outperform both SFH and hybrid DS/SFH systems under Rayleigh fading and multi-user interference. Also, both hybrid DS/SFH and hybrid DS/FFH show performance improvement with increasing spreading factor and decreasing number of hopping frequencies

    Sustainability as a Multi-criteria Concept

    Get PDF
Sustainability is a fairly old concept, born in the 18th century in the field of forestry, within a mono-functionality perspective. The concept has considerably evolved in the last few years towards a multi-functionality context, with applications reported in practically all areas of economic interest. On the other hand, modern sustainability is a complex problem, for two reasons: a) The multiplicity of functions of a very different nature involved in the process and b) The manner in which different segments of the society or stakeholders perceive the relative importance of these functions. For the above reasons, a realistic approach for dealing with the sustainability issue requires taking into consideration multiple criteria of different nature (economic, environmental and social), and in many cases within a participatory decision making framework. This book presents a collection of papers, dealing with different theoretical and applied issues of sustainability, with the help of a modern multi-criteria decision-making theory, with a single as well as several stakeholders involved in the decision-making process. Hopefully, this material will encourage academics and practitioners to alter their research in this hot and vital topic. After all, the sustainable management of the environment and its embedded resources is one of the most important, if not the major challenge of the 21st century

Development of Life Cycle Assessment Based Air Quality Modeling and Decision Support System for the Mining Industry

    Get PDF
Air quality in mining region has been facing many challenges due to lack of understanding of atmospheric factors and physical removal mechanism. Mining operations emit various types of pollutants which could violate the environmental guidelines. The development of an integrated approach is conceptualized in this thesis as life cycle assessment based air quality modeling system (LCAQMS) for the mining industry. LCAQMS consists of four primary models which are: (1) life cycle inventory model, (2) artificial neural network model, (3) mining-zone air dispersion model, and (4) decision analysis model. A graphical user interface (GUI) is built to integrate primary models to understand the pollutant’s fate from its generation (emission inventory) to its management (control decisions). The life cycle inventory (LCI) model is developed to determine emission inventory using inverse matrix method, and defined characterization methods are investigated to assess the environmental impact. Artificial neural network model is developed to analyze carbon footprints (CO2 equivalent) using backpropagation method. Mining-zone air dispersion model (MADM) is developed to generate the predicted concentration of air pollutants at various receptor levels by considering the deposition effect. The meteorological factors based on atmospheric stability conditions are determined by employing the Pasquill-Turner method (PTM). The decision analysis model comprises multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method and air pollution control model (APCM) to provide air pollution control alternatives and optimize the cost-effective solutions, respectively. Monte Carlo simulation accomplishes the uncertainties in the system. Moreover, an environmental risk assessment (ERA) method is extended by integrating the APCM with a fuzzy set. The applicability of LCAQMS is explored through three different case studies of open-pit metal mining in North America. Inventory results first show the air emission load for each mining activity and allow to evaluate the emission impact by linking the inventory to each impact category. Then this study helps to quantify the carbon footprints for the gold and copper mines. Also, prediction of significant pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, SO2, and NOx at ground level has been calculated. The results depict that dry deposition is a dominate physical removal mechanism in the mining area. The LCAQMS results are evaluated with the monitoring field values, particularly MADM results are statistically tested against California puff (CALPUFF) model. Additionally, atmospheric stability is examined by analyzing the relationship between modeled PM2.5 concentrations and mixing height based on seasonal variation and the diurnal cycle. In conclusion, LCAQMS can serve as a useful tool for the stakeholders to assess the impact, predict the air quality, and aid planners to minimize the pollutants at a marginal cost by suggesting control pollution techniques
