Electric vehicle (EV) technology has evolved rapidly over the last decade with new designs of EV drivetrain systems and components but no specific design has been able to serve as a solution that is affordable, reliable and performance-wise similar to existing gasoline vehicle equivalent. Extended driving range and overall cost of the vehicle still remain major bottlenecks.     On the Modeling, Analysis and Development of PMSM: For Traction and Charging Application

    Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are widely implemented commercially available traction motors owing to their high torque production capability and wide operating speed range. However, to achieve significant electric vehicle (EV) global market infiltration in the coming years, the technological gaps in the technical targets of the traction motor must be addressed towards further improvement of driving range per charge of the vehicle and reduced motor weight and cost. Thus, this thesis focuses on the design and development of a novel high speed traction PMSM with improved torque density, maximized efficiency, reduced torque ripple and increased driving range suitable for both traction and integrated charging applications. First, the required performance targets are determined using a drive cycle based vehicle dynamic model, existing literature and roadmaps for future EVs. An unconventional fractional–slot distributed winding configuration with a coil pitch of 2 is selected for analysis due to their short end–winding length, reduced winding losses and improved torque density. For the chosen baseline topology, a non–dominated sorting genetic algorithm based selection of optimal odd slot numbers is performed for higher torque production and reduced torque ripple. Further, for the selected odd slot–pole combination, a novel star–delta winding configuration is modeled and analyzed using winding function theory for higher torque density, reduced spatial harmonics, reduced torque ripple and machine losses. Thereafter, to analyze the motor performance with control and making critical decisions on inter–dependent design parameter variations for machine optimization, a parametric design approach using a novel coupled magnetic equivalent circuit model and thermal model incorporating current harmonics for fractional–slot wound PMSMs was developed and verified. The developed magnetic circuit model incorporates all machine non–linearities including effects of temperature and induced inverter harmonics as well as the space harmonics in the winding inductances of a fractional–slot winding configuration. Using the proposed model with a pareto ant colony optimization algorithm, an optimal rotor design is obtained to reduce the magnet utilization and obtain maximized torque density and extended operating range. Further, the developed machine structure is also analyzed and verified for integrated charging operation where the machine’s winding inductances are used as line inductors for charging the battery thereby eliminating the requirement of an on–board charger in the powertrain and hence resulting in reduced weight, cost and extended driving range. Finally, a scaled–down prototype of the proposed PMSM is developed and validated with experimental results in terms of machine inductances, torque ripple, torque–power–speed curves and efficiency maps over the operating speed range. Subsequently, understanding the capabilities and challenges of the developed scaled–down prototype, a full–scale design with commercial traction level ratings, will be developed and analyzed using finite element analysis. Further recommendations for design improvement, future work and analysis will also be summarized towards the end of the dissertation

    Dual Benefits of Adding Damper Bars in PMSMs for Electrified Vehicles: Improved Machine Dynamics and Simplified Integrated Charging

    Recently, due to rising environmental concerns and predicted future shortages of fossil fuels, there is a movement towards electrification of the transportation industry. A vast majority of the current research uses permanent magnet synchronous machines as the main traction motor in the drivetrain. This work proposes to add a special damper to a conventional permanent magnet synchronous machine to further improve the suitability of this machine for electrified vehicles. Firstly, an equivalent circuit model is developed to simulate the operation of a conventional PMSM with a damper. A synchronous loading test is proposed to determine the synchronous reactance of the machine. A modified blocked rotor test is used to find the damper parameters assuming that the rotor cage construction is known. Also a single-phase AC test that can be used to determine the damper parameters without prior knowledge of the rotor construction is proposed and presented as an alternative to the blocked rotor test. Thereafter, the models of a 50 kW traction motor and the same machine with damper bars are developed and simulated. The performance of both machines are compared and evaluated. The damper parameters are selected based on the dynamic and steady state performances. It is also shown that the machine with a damper has faster response to a three-phase short circuit fault. In addition, this study also looks into integrated charging which utilizes the existing drivetrain components for vehicle to grid and grid to vehicle operation. The damper is shown to be effective in mitigating the saliency condition caused by the buried magnets of IPMSM at stand-still condition. As a result, the machine windings can be used as line inductors for integrated charging

    An Integrated On-Board Battery Charger with a Nine-Phase PM Machine

    A fully integrated on-board battery charger for electrical vehicles (EVs) has been developed recently using a nine-phase machine. All the components used for propulsion are employed in the charging process, no additional components are required, and there is no need for hardware reconfiguration between charging and propulsion modes of operation. The proposed solution can be connected directly to single-phase or three-phase grid to perform charging, so that the expensive off-board charger infrastructure is not needed. The only requirement is to use a nine-phase machine in combination with a nine-phase inverter in the powertrain of the EV. This however inevitably brings in further advantages in the propulsion mode, such as increased fault tolerance and the current subdivision into more phases. The benefits of the topology, originally developed for an induction machine, make it interesting for further investigation. Therefore, the performance of the charger is examined here using a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). The results show that the charger topology is applicable to other types of synchronous machines and is, even more importantly, independent of the angular spatial shift between the individual three-phase windings of the nine-phase machine’s stator. The results are comparable with those obtained using an induction machine and confirm the viability of the solution in conjunction with the PMSM as a propulsion motor

    In-wheel motor vibration control for distributed-driven electric vehicles:A review

    Efficient, safe, and comfortable electric vehicles (EVs) are essential for the creation of a sustainable transport system. Distributed-driven EVs, which often use in-wheel motors (IWMs), have many benefits with respect to size (compactness), controllability, and efficiency. However, the vibration of IWMs is a particularly important factor for both passengers and drivers, and it is therefore crucial for a successful commercialization of distributed-driven EVs. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review and state-of-the-art vibration-source-analysis and -mitigation methods in IWMs. First, selection criteria are given for IWMs, and a multidimensional comparison for several motor types is provided. The IWM vibration sources are then divided into internally-, and externally-induced vibration sources and discussed in detail. Next, vibration reduction methods, which include motor-structure optimization, motor controller, and additional control-components, are reviewed. Emerging research trends and an outlook for future improvement aims are summarized at the end of the paper. This paper can provide useful information for researchers, who are interested in the application and vibration mitigation of IWMs or similar topics

    Simplified Damper Cage Circuital Model and Fast Analytical–Numerical Approach for the Analysis of Synchronous Generators

    The long and enduring history of utilization of the wound-field synchronous generator in a large number of applications makes it one of the most known and consolidated electrical machine technologies. Thus, its design, modeling, and analysis processes have been widely exploited and implemented through various and different methods, including the equivalent circuit approach. When a damper cage is embedded within the rotor of the synchronous generator, its theoretical analysis becomes quite complicated. Thus, today numerical tools are being used. In this paper, an alternative way of modeling symmetric damper cages of salient-pole synchronous generators is presented. The proposed approach is embedded in the circuital model of the generator. A hybrid analytical-numerical model is implemented, permitting to accurately predict the voltage waveforms of the generator with excellent accuracy, however, at a lower cost of computational resources than the pure numerical method. A case study of an off-the-shelf 400 kVA machine is considered to develop and validate the proposed technique. The results are compared with the corresponding finite-element and experimental evaluations for validation purposes

    NOVEL METHODS FOR PERMANENT MAGNET DEMAGNETIZATION DETECTION IN PERMANENT MAGNET SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES

    Monitoring and detecting PM flux linkage is important to maintain a stable permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) operation. The key problems that need to be solved at this stage are to: 1) establish a demagnetization magnetic flux model that takes into account the influence of various nonlinear and complex factors to reveal the demagnetization mechanism; 2) explore the relationship between different factors and demagnetizing magnetic field, to detect the demagnetization in the early stage; and 3) propose post-demagnetization measures. This thesis investigates permanent magnet (PM) demagnetization detection for PMSM machines to achieve high-performance and reliable machine drive for practical industrial and consumer applications. In this thesis, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation as well as experimental investigations are carried out to systematically study the demagnetization detection mechanism and post-demagnetization measures for permanent magnet synchronous motors. At first a flux based acoustic noise model is proposed to analyze online PM demagnetization detection by using a back propagation neural network (BPNN) with acoustic noise data. In this method, the PM demagnetization is detected by means of comparing the measured acoustic signal of PMSM with an acoustic signal library of seven acoustical indicators. Then torque ripple is chosen for online PM demagnetization diagnosis by using continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) and Grey System Theory (GST). This model is able to reveal the relationship between torque variation and PM electromagnetic interferences. After demagnetization being detected, a current regulation strategy is proposed to minimize the torque ripples induced by PM demagnetization. Next, in order to compare the demagnetization detection accuracy, different data mining techniques, Vold-Kalman filtering order tracking (VKF-OT) and dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) based detection approach is applied to real-time PM flux monitoring through torque ripple again. VKF-OT is introduced to track the order of torque ripple of PMSM running in transient state. Lastly, the combination of acoustic noise and torque is investigated for demagnetization detection by using multi-sensor information fusion to improve the system redundancy and accuracy. Bayesian network based multi-sensor information fusion is then proposed to detect the demagnetization ratio from the extracted features. During the analysis of demagnetization detection methods, the proposed PM detection approaches both form torque ripple and acoustic noise are extensively evaluated on a laboratory PM machine drive system under different speeds, load conditions, and temperatures

    Efficiency Evaluation of Fully Integrated On-board EV Battery Chargers with Nine-Phase Machines

    A fully integrated on-board battery charger for future electric vehicles (EVs) has been recently introduced. It re-utilizes all the propulsion components of an EV in charging/vehicle-to-grid (V2G) modes, it does not require any additional components or hardware reconfiguration, and charging/V2G modes are realized with zero electromagnetic torque production. Both fast (three-phase) and slow (single-phase) charging are possible, with unity power factor operation at the grid side. The solution is based on the use of a triple three-phase machine and a nine-phase inverter/rectifier. This paper reports on the results of efficiency evaluation for the said system. Testing is performed using both a nine-phase induction machine and a nine-phase permanent magnet (PM) machine for a range of operating conditions in charging/V2G modes, with both three-phase and single-phase grid connection. Additionally, the impact of converter interleaving on the losses and efficiency is also studied. Losses are separated for different subsystems, thus providing an insight into the importance of optimization of different EV power train components from the efficiency point of view. Promising efficiencies, in the order of 90%, are achieved although none of the system components have been optimized

    Thermal and Electromagnetic Stator Vent Design Optimisation for Synchronous Generators

This paper deals with the stator cooling of an air-cooled, synchronous generator with a power rating of 400 kVA, which has been improved by adding two radial vents to the stator. To ensure an optimal vent design, a novel combined thermal and electromagnetic modelling approach is developed. A parametric 3D Conjugate Heat Transfer Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is used for the thermal modelling. An electromagnetic 2D Finite Element Analysis determined the impact that venting the stator has on the loss distribution. The models are coupled by deriving analytical correlations between the combined vent width and rotor copper, rotor iron and stator iron losses. These correlations are implemented into the optimisation procedure of the parametric CFD model. Five design parameters are optimised simultaneously with the aim of minimising the peak stator winding temperature. The modelling approach was validated experimentally by thermal, torque and mass flow measurements on the benchmark machine, as well as the newly designed prototype
