Among the choices of grammatical forms, the transitive system stands out in the pedophile community. The purpose of this study is to reveal the exercise of power and ideology of pedophiles through their transitive choices. In systemic functional linguistics (SFL), the transitivity system is widely used to analyze isolated clauses and contextual clauses. The data for this research was taken from conversational texts by pedophiles at WordPress Jakongsu from December 2021 to February 2022.  Data were collected through netnography approach (Kozinets, 2010), which applies ethnography collection technique in the virtual world. The existed data were compiled in a digital archive. To analyze the data, Fairclough's critical discourse analysis (CDA) model was used (i.e., description, interpretation, and explanation). The findings of the study indicate that pedophiles tend to use clauses of the material process than those of mental and relational processes.

Pedophilic immutability is a complex phenomenon that has been challenging to understand. Perceptions of pedophiles have largely been ignored in understanding how pedophilic immutability develops. However, relationships between causal attributions and implicit beliefs may provide evidence for new conceptualizations related to pedophilic immutability. The purpose of this study was to explore pedophiles’ perceptions directly with attribution and implicit theory as key foundational principles of pedophilic immutability. Research questions were developed to allow for rich description from participants regarding their causal attributions and implicit beliefs associated with pedophilic immutability. Qualitative exploration was necessary to address the dearth of research related to pedophilic immutability focusing on pedophiles’ perceptions. Four male individuals volunteered and participated in the research study interviews. Thematic analysis was used to identify common themes among causal attribution and implicit beliefs that are associated with pedophilic immutability. Major themes identified during thematic analysis included that pedophilia development is complex, nature then nurture, nothing I can do about it, never believed but tried and failed, reality for pedophiles, and change is ambiguous. External causal attributions led to entity implicit beliefs related to pedophilic immutability, which was likely a main factor behind that particular mindset. A more diverse population with a deeper sample size would provide stronger evidence for some of the resulting interpretations. The findings from this study can be used to facilitate positive social change through development of a conceptual framework and a more comprehensive societal view of pedophilic immutability

The internet and sexual offending: an international perspective

Although the sexual abuse of children is a long-standing problem that has received considerable scholarly attention, still little is understood about sex offenses that occur by means of, or are facilitated through, the Internet. Increasing awareness of the Internet as a platform for the perpetration of sexual crimes has raised new questions on this aspect of criminal behavior. Of interest, for example, is whether those who engage in Internet-related sex crimes are a distinct type of sexual offender, or whether these offenders “merely” use newer technological methods to facilitate or perpetrate offenses. Moreover, little is known about the patterns, motivations, or typological similarities among types of individuals who use the Internet to commit sexual crimes. Of further concern is the risk posed by this class of sexual offenders, particularly the extent or rate at which those with an Internet-based conviction will escalate to (or have already engaged in) other types of sexual offences, especially “hands on” or contact sexual offenses. In reviewing the current empirical literature and drawing attention to areas of research need, this chapter addresses these and other pertinent questions related to use of the Internet in the commission of sexual offenses This chapter also draws focus to the importance of international cooperation, including policing, industry, (e.g., Internet Service Providers [ISPs], finance companies), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in the control and persecution of these offenses. Given the still limited empirical knowledge in this area, coupled with the inherently global nature of the Internet and the pace of technological advancement, the prosecution of Internet-based sexual crimes poses unique challenges that require thoughtful and rigorous scholarly attention

Sex Offender Treatment Program: Initial Recidivism Study

    Get PDF
This report presents results of a recidivism study of participants in the Sex Offender Treatment Program at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center, Alaska Department of Corrections, from January 1987 to August 1995. The report provides an overview and history of sex offender treatment in Alaska as well as a literature review of other studies and findings on this area of treatment. The Alaska study, which was the first conducted of the treatment program, found that any level of treatment achieved resulted in less recidivism, with the longer the period of treatment, the lower the recidivism. The study also noted the high percentage of Alaska Natives in the program and the history of alcohol and substance abuse presented by many sex offenders. The majority of offenders in the program were guilty of assaulting children. The study discusses the program's cost benefits as well as the implications of its findings for probation and parole.Alaska Department of CorrectionsI. Introduction / II. Identifying the Coping Strategies of Nonoffending Pedophilic and Hebephilic Individuals From Their Online Forum Posts

    Get PDF
Individuals who identify as pedophilic or hebephilic, and who do not offend, are increasingly visible in online discourse and as a focus of research. Developing knowledge about this population will offer insights into their psychological needs and, potentially, into the mechanisms and strategies individuals use to live offense-free lives. This study examined coping strategies among members of an online forum supporting pedohebephilic individuals who do not wish to offend. Forum users’ posts were analyzed using thematic analysis. Eleven themes emerged which were classifiable into three superordinate themes around (1) the acceptance of pedophilia, (2) strategies to stay safe, and (3) dealing with sexual arousal. These themes offer insight into the varying strategies used by these individuals to cope with stress and/or to remain offense free. Understanding whether these strategies are adaptive or maladaptive may help develop better support services for those who have not offended and may inform prevention efforts

Child Pornography and Child Sexual Abuse in the 21st Century: A Critical Overview of the Technological Shifts in Distribution, the Academic Literature, and the Current Re-Entry Policies for Convicts of these Crimes

This capstone project focuses on four distinct but interrelated papers. The first details the role of technology in creating a resurgence of child pornography and how both the authorities and corporations have responded to this phenomenon. The second paper provides a literature review on research assessing the amount of child pornography consumers who victimize children. The third work is my own original research on the topic explored in the second paper. The fourth and final paper explains the post-incarceration consequences child pornography possessors often encounter and how they reintegrate into society, in addition to assessing the flaws and successes of these approaches. The overarching theme of this capstone project is to detail why this topic is a major concern and not a single criminal justice problem. By describing how child pornography rose to prominence in the 21st century as a major criminal justice concern, why there is more to the issue than the production, distribution, and consumption of child pornography, and the current approaches to preventing these individuals from reoffending after their release from prison, I aim to provide the reader with an understanding of how the consumption of child pornography is a major issue and how the United States can implement more robust approaches to assessing and confronting it

This theoretical paper is published by the EUCPN Secretariat in connection with the theme of the Luxembourgian presidency which was cybercrime. Cybercrime is a global definition which characterizes many different criminal forms committed in the virtual world. This means the phenomenon covers a very wide scope of activities. This theoretical paper is written as an overview to help understand the definition of cybercrime and its forms. We concentrate on the variety of consequences as a result of the phenomenon. Moreover, this paper also has attention to the current European law and legislative actions against cybercrime
