Invertible residual networks in the context of regularization theory for linear inverse problems
Learned inverse problem solvers exhibit remarkable performance in
applications like image reconstruction tasks. These data-driven reconstruction
methods often follow a two-step scheme. First, one trains the often neural
network-based reconstruction scheme via a dataset. Second, one applies the
scheme to new measurements to obtain reconstructions. We follow these steps but
parameterize the reconstruction scheme with invertible residual networks
(iResNets). We demonstrate that the invertibility enables investigating the
influence of the training and architecture choices on the resulting
reconstruction scheme. For example, assuming local approximation properties of
the network, we show that these schemes become convergent regularizations. In
addition, the investigations reveal a formal link to the linear regularization
theory of linear inverse problems and provide a nonlinear spectral
regularization for particular architecture classes. On the numerical side, we
investigate the local approximation property of selected trained architectures
and present a series of experiments on the MNIST dataset that underpin and
extend our theoretical findings
The Impact of Cultural Familiarity on Students’ Social Media Usage in Higher Education
Using social media (SM) in Higher education (HE) becomes unavoidable in the new teaching and learning pedagogy.
The current generation of students creates their groups on SM for collaboration. However, SM can be a primary source of
learning distraction due to its nature, which does not support structured learning. Hence, derived from the literature, this study proposes three learning customised system features, to be implemented on SM when used in Higher Education HE.
Nevertheless, some psychological factors appear to have a stronger impact on students’ adoption of SM in learning than the proposed features. A Quantitative survey was conducted at a university in Uzbekistan to collect 52 undergraduate students’ perception of proposed SM learning customised features in Moodle. These features aim to provide localised, personalised, and privacy control self-management environment for collaboration in Moodle. These features could be significant in predicting students’ engagement with SM in HE. The data analysis showed a majority of positive feedback towards the proposed learning customised SM. However, the surveyed students’ engagement with these features was observed as minimal. The course leader initiated a semi-structured interview to investigate the reason. Although the students confirmed their acceptance of the learning customised features, their preferences to alternate SM, which is Telegram overridden their usage of the proposed learning customized SM, which is Twitter. The students avoided the Moodle integrated Twitter (which provided highly accepted features) and chose to use the Telegram as an external collaboration platform driven by their familiarity and social preferences with the Telegram since it is the popular SM in Uzbekistan. This study is part of an ongoing PhD research which involves deeper frame of learners’ cognitive usage of the learning management system. Investigating musical performance: Commonality and diversity amongst classical and non-classical musicians
The research project 'Investigating Musical Performance: Comparative Studies in Advanced Musical Learning' was devised to investigate how classical, popular, jazz and Scottish traditional musicians deepen and develop their learning about performance in undergraduate, postgraduate and wider music community contexts. The aim of this paper is to explore the findings relating to attitudes towards the importance of musical skills, the relevance of musical activities and the nature of musical expertise. Questionnaire data obtained from the first phase of data collection (n = 244) produced evidence of differences and similarities between classical and non-classical musicians. While classical musicians emphasised the drive to excel musically and technically and prioritised notation-based skills and analytical skills, non-classical musicians attached greater importance to memorising and improvising. Regardless of genre, the musicians all considered practical activities such as practising, rehearsing, taking lessons and giving performances to be relevant. However, while classical musicians attached greater relevance to giving lessons and solo performances, their non-classical colleagues considered making music for fun and listening to music within their own genre to be more relevant. Some underlying processes that may have accounted for the differences in attitudes are explored, including musical influences, age of initial engagement with music and educational background. Points of similarity and differences are discussed, and possibilities for the two musical trajectories to inform and learn from each other are highlighted
Culture in the design of mHealth UI:An effort to increase acceptance among culturally specific groups
Purpose: Designers of mobile applications have long understood the importance of users’ preferences in making the user experience easier, convenient and therefore valuable. The cultural aspects of groups of users are among the key features of users’ design preferences, because each group’s preferences depend on various features that are culturally compatible. The process of integrating culture into the design of a system has always been an important ingredient for effective and interactive human computer interface. This study aims to investigate the design of a mobile health (mHealth) application user interface (UI) based on Arabic culture. It was argued that integrating certain cultural values of specific groups of users into the design of UI would increase their acceptance of the technology. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 135 users responded to an online survey about their acceptance of a culturally designed mHealth. Findings: The findings showed that culturally based language, colours, layout and images had a significant relationship with users’ behavioural intention to use the culturally based mHealth UI. Research limitations/implications: First, the sample and the data collected of this study were restricted to Arab users and Arab culture; therefore, the results cannot be generalized to other cultures and users. Second, the adapted unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model was used in this study instead of the new version, which may expose new perceptions. Third, the cultural aspects of UI design in this study were limited to the images, colours, language and layout. Practical implications: It encourages UI designers to implement the relevant cultural aspects while developing mobile applications. Originality/value: Embedding Arab cultural aspects in designing UI for mobile applications to satisfy Arab users and enhance their acceptance toward using mobile applications, which will reflect positively on their lives.</p
ATTITUDES TOWARDS JAVANESE LANGUAGE AND ITS MAINTENANCE BY THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS OF DIPONEGORO UNIVERSITY
English Department Students of Undip whose parents are Javanese have been exposed to at least three
languages namely Javanese, Indonesian, and English. Some of them are learning other foreign languages
such as Korean, Japanese, and French. As a local language, Javanese has a certain position in its users. The
position can be influenced by its users’ attitudes towards the language. I will show the students’ attitudes
towards Javanese and their roles in maintaining Javanese language. I used questionnaires, DCT (Discourse
Completion Tasks), non-participant observation, and interview to present the data. To analyze them, I used
inferential, distributional, and translational methods. The result indicates that the English Department
Students of Undip have positive attitudes towards Javanese and its maintenance. However, there is a
tendency that the Javanese language used is shifting. The shift is characterized by various code system
namely Indonesian, Basa, Ngoko, sometimes Krama, and even English
