    Reducing dose for digital cranial radiography : The increased source to the image-receptor distance approach

    This investigation proposes that an increased source to the image-receptor distance (SID) technique can be used to optimize occipital frontal and lateral cranial radiographs acquired with direct digital radiography. Although cranial radiography is not performed on a routine basis, it should nonetheless be optimized to keep the dose to the patient as low as reasonably achievable, particularly because it can form part of the facial bone and sinus series. Dose measurements were acquired at various SIDs, and image quality was assessed using visual grading analysis. Statistically significant reductions in the effective dose between 19.2% and 23.9% were obtained when the SID was increased from the standard 100 to 150 cm (P ≤.05), and visual grading analysis scores indicate that image quality remained diagnostically acceptable for both projections. This investigation concludes that increasing the SID effectively optimizes occipital frontal and lateral skull radiographs. Radiology departments must be advised of the benefits of this technique with the goal of introducing an updated reference SID of 150 cm into clinical practice.Peer reviewe

    Systematic composition of distributed objects: Processes and sessions

    We consider a system with the infrastructure for the creation and interconnection of large numbers of distributed persistent objects. This system is exemplified by the Internet: potentially, every appliance and document on the Internet has both persistent state and the ability to interact with large numbers of other appliances and documents on the Internet. This paper elucidates the characteristics of such a system, and proposes the compositional requirements of its corresponding infrastructure. We explore the problems of specifying, composing, reasoning about and implementing applications in such a system. A specific concern of our research is developing the infrastructure to support structuring distributed applications by using sequential, choice and parallel composition, in the anarchic environment where application compositions may be unforeseeable and interactions may be unknown prior to actually occurring. The structuring concepts discussed are relevant to a wide range of distributed applications; our implementation is illustrated with collaborative Java processes interacting over the Internet, but the methodology provided can be applied independent of specific platforms

    How the design of socio-technical experiments can enable radical changes for sustainability

    Sustainability requires radical innovations, but their introduction and diffusion usually encounter the opposition of existing socio-technical regimes. An important challenge is, therefore, to understand how to catalyse and support the process of transitioning towards these innovations. Building upon insights from transition studies (in particular the concepts of Strategic Niche Management and Transition Management), and through an action research project (aimed at designing, introducing and diffusing a sustainable mobility system in the suburban areas of Cape Town), the paper investigates the role of design in triggering and orienting societal transformations. A key role is given to the implementation of socio-technical experiments. A new socio-technical system design role emerges: a role in which the ideation and development of sustainable innovation concepts is coupled with the designing of appropriate transition paths to gradually incubate, introduce and diffuse these concepts

    The experiment of Community involvement in a project planning within the historical context of Rome city

    The PhD student proposes a method of community involvement in the planning and in the regeneration of historical centers, in support of the city’s accessibility and people’s well-being. The outcomes of the research are the analysis and the studies conducted over three years with people with sensory, physical and cognitive impairments on the sustainable mobility of historical spaces of Rome, thanks to an agreement between the Phd Student Start up Research Project financed by Sapienza, Università di Roma and the Municipality of Rome. Citizens are involved in the analysis process: they communicate their opinions, impressions, perceptions and needs related to the city experience through a dedicated help-desk, in return, they receive an advice service and a design project for their apartment that suits their necessities. Thanks also to several tours and surveys conducted with people with special needs, the phd student studies the human senses, the perception of the space, the physical barriers, natural and urban elements, with the aim to elaborate an accessibility-map of the City Center Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Sites. Citizens can contribute by sharing information about the status of the public spaces, or by giving advice on adaptive-ergonomic urban furnishings. The research aims to elaborate an application for mobile systems that identifies an interactive cartography of the city available for all the citizens, especially people with reduced mobility. The map, developed on multiple layers, also contains the layer made up of people’s emotions and their perceptions
