VECTORS: Video communication through opportunistic relays and scalable video coding
Crowd-sourced video distribution is frequently of interest in the local
vicinity. In this paper, we propose a novel design to transfer such content
over opportunistic networks with adaptive quality encoding to achieve
reasonable delay bounds. The video segments are transmitted between source and
destination in a delay tolerant manner using the Nearby Connections Android
library. This implementation can be applied to multiple domains, including farm
monitoring, wildlife, and environmental tracking, disaster response scenarios,
etc. In this work, we present the design of an opportunistic contact based

A Resource Intensive Traffic-Aware Scheme for Cluster-based Energy Conservation in Wireless Devices
Wireless traffic that is destined for a certain device in a network, can be
exploited in order to minimize the availability and delay trade-offs, and
mitigate the Energy consumption. The Energy Conservation (EC) mechanism can be
node-centric by considering the traversed nodal traffic in order to prolong the
network lifetime. This work describes a quantitative traffic-based approach
where a clustered Sleep-Proxy mechanism takes place in order to enable each
node to sleep according to the time duration of the active traffic that each
node expects and experiences. Sleep-proxies within the clusters are created
according to pairwise active-time comparison, where each node expects during
the active periods, a requested traffic. For resource availability and recovery
purposes, the caching mechanism takes place in case where the node for which
the traffic is destined is not available. The proposed scheme uses Role-based
nodes which are assigned to manipulate the traffic in a cluster, through the
time-oriented backward difference traffic evaluation scheme. Simulation study
is carried out for the proposed backward estimation scheme and the
effectiveness of the end-to-end EC mechanism taking into account a number of
metrics and measures for the effects while incrementing the sleep time duration
under the proposed framework. Comparative simulation results show that the
proposed scheme could be applied to infrastructure-less systems, providing
energy-efficient resource exchange with significant minimization in the power

Energy-Efficient Streaming Using Non-volatile Memory
The disk and the DRAM in a typical mobile system consume a significant fraction (up to 30%) of the total system energy. To save on storage energy, the DRAM should be small and the disk should be spun down for long periods of time. We show that this can be achieved for predominantly streaming workloads by connecting the disk to the DRAM via a large non-volatile memory (NVM). We refer to this as the NVM-based architecture (NVMBA); the conventional architecture with only a DRAM and a disk is referred to as DRAMBA. The NVM in the NVMBA acts as a traffic reshaper from the disk to the DRAM. The total system costs are balanced, since the cost increase due to adding the NVM is compensated by the decrease in DRAM cost. We analyze the energy saving of NVMBA, with NAND flash memory serving as NVM, relative to DRAMBA with respect to (1) the streaming demand, (2) the disk form factor, (3) the best-effort provision, and (4) the stream location on the disk. We present a worst-case analysis of the reliability of the disk drive and the flash memory, and show that a small flash capacity is sufficient to operate the system over a year at negligible cost. Disk lifetime is superior to flash, so that is of no concern
Performance Analysis of WebRTC-based Video Streaming over Power Constrained Platforms
This work analyses the use of the WebRTC framework on resource-constrained platforms. WebRTC is a consolidated solution for real-time video streaming, and it is an appealing solution in a wide range of application scenarios. We focus our attention on those in which power consumption, size and weight are of paramount importance because of size, weight and power requirements, such as the use case of unmanned aerial vehicles delivering real-time video streams overWebRTC to peers on the ground. The testbed described in this work shows that the power consumption can be reduced by changing WebRTC default settings while maintaining comparable video quality
