Improving the translation environment for professional translators
When using computer-aided translation systems in a typical, professional translation workflow, there are several stages at which there is room for improvement. The SCATE (Smart Computer-Aided Translation Environment) project investigated several of these aspects, both from a human-computer interaction point of view, as well as from a purely technological side.
This paper describes the SCATE research with respect to improved fuzzy matching, parallel treebanks, the integration of translation memories with machine translation, quality estimation, terminology extraction from comparable texts, the use of speech recognition in the translation process, and human computer interaction and interface design for the professional translation environment. For each of these topics, we describe the experiments we performed and the conclusions drawn, providing an overview of the highlights of the entire SCATE project
Bridging the Semantic Gap in Multimedia Information Retrieval: Top-down and Bottom-up approaches
Semantic representation of multimedia information is vital for enabling the kind of multimedia search capabilities that professional searchers require. Manual annotation is often not possible because of the shear scale of the multimedia information that needs indexing. This paper explores the ways in which we are using both top-down, ontologically driven approaches and bottom-up, automatic-annotation approaches to provide retrieval facilities to users. We also discuss many of the current techniques that we are investigating to combine these top-down and bottom-up approaches
Induction of Word and Phrase Alignments for Automatic Document Summarization
Current research in automatic single document summarization is dominated by
two effective, yet naive approaches: summarization by sentence extraction, and
headline generation via bag-of-words models. While successful in some tasks,
neither of these models is able to adequately capture the large set of
linguistic devices utilized by humans when they produce summaries. One possible
explanation for the widespread use of these models is that good techniques have
been developed to extract appropriate training data for them from existing
document/abstract and document/headline corpora. We believe that future
progress in automatic summarization will be driven both by the development of
more sophisticated, linguistically informed models, as well as a more effective
leveraging of document/abstract corpora. In order to open the doors to
simultaneously achieving both of these goals, we have developed techniques for
automatically producing word-to-word and phrase-to-phrase alignments between
documents and their human-written abstracts. These alignments make explicit the
correspondences that exist in such document/abstract pairs, and create a
potentially rich data source from which complex summarization algorithms may
learn. This paper describes experiments we have carried out to analyze the
ability of humans to perform such alignments, and based on these analyses, we
describe experiments for creating them automatically. Our model for the
alignment task is based on an extension of the standard hidden Markov model,
and learns to create alignments in a completely unsupervised fashion. We
describe our model in detail and present experimental results that show that
our model is able to learn to reliably identify word- and phrase-level
alignments in a corpus of pairs
Improving Language Modelling with Noise-contrastive estimation
Neural language models do not scale well when the vocabulary is large.
Noise-contrastive estimation (NCE) is a sampling-based method that allows for
fast learning with large vocabularies. Although NCE has shown promising
performance in neural machine translation, it was considered to be an
unsuccessful approach for language modelling. A sufficient investigation of the
hyperparameters in the NCE-based neural language models was also missing. In
this paper, we showed that NCE can be a successful approach in neural language
modelling when the hyperparameters of a neural network are tuned appropriately.
We introduced the 'search-then-converge' learning rate schedule for NCE and
designed a heuristic that specifies how to use this schedule. The impact of the
other important hyperparameters, such as the dropout rate and the weight
initialisation range, was also demonstrated. We showed that appropriate tuning
of NCE-based neural language models outperforms the state-of-the-art
single-model methods on a popular benchmark
Characterizing the impact of geometric properties of word embeddings on task performance
Analysis of word embedding properties to inform their use in downstream NLP
tasks has largely been studied by assessing nearest neighbors. However,
geometric properties of the continuous feature space contribute directly to the
use of embedding features in downstream models, and are largely unexplored. We
consider four properties of word embedding geometry, namely: position relative
to the origin, distribution of features in the vector space, global pairwise
distances, and local pairwise distances. We define a sequence of
transformations to generate new embeddings that expose subsets of these
properties to downstream models and evaluate change in task performance to
understand the contribution of each property to NLP models. We transform
publicly available pretrained embeddings from three popular toolkits (word2vec,
GloVe, and FastText) and evaluate on a variety of intrinsic tasks, which model
linguistic information in the vector space, and extrinsic tasks, which use
vectors as input to machine learning models. We find that intrinsic evaluations
are highly sensitive to absolute position, while extrinsic tasks rely primarily
on local similarity. Our findings suggest that future embedding models and
post-processing techniques should focus primarily on similarity to nearby
