    Kinematic Analysis of a Flexible Tensegrity Robot

Most compliant mechanisms rely on notches or shape changes to simulate a standard kinematic joint. In this work a kinematic model of a simple parallel continuum mechanism that combines a deformable element and cable is presented.     Quantifying the Evolutionary Self Structuring of Embodied Cognitive Networks

    We outline a possible theoretical framework for the quantitative modeling of networked embodied cognitive systems. We notice that: 1) information self structuring through sensory-motor coordination does not deterministically occur in Rn vector space, a generic multivariable space, but in SE(3), the group structure of the possible motions of a body in space; 2) it happens in a stochastic open ended environment. These observations may simplify, at the price of a certain abstraction, the modeling and the design of self organization processes based on the maximization of some informational measures, such as mutual information. Furthermore, by providing closed form or computationally lighter algorithms, it may significantly reduce the computational burden of their implementation. We propose a modeling framework which aims to give new tools for the design of networks of new artificial self organizing, embodied and intelligent agents and the reverse engineering of natural ones. At this point, it represents much a theoretical conjecture and it has still to be experimentally verified whether this model will be useful in practice.

    Bipedal Hopping: Reduced-order Model Embedding via Optimization-based Control

    This paper presents the design and validation of controlling hopping on the 3D bipedal robot Cassie. A spring-mass model is identified from the kinematics and compliance of the robot. The spring stiffness and damping are encapsulated by the leg length, thus actuating the leg length can create and control hopping behaviors. Trajectory optimization via direct collocation is performed on the spring-mass model to plan jumping and landing motions. The leg length trajectories are utilized as desired outputs to synthesize a control Lyapunov function based quadratic program (CLF-QP). Centroidal angular momentum, taking as an addition output in the CLF-QP, is also stabilized in the jumping phase to prevent whole body rotation in the underactuated flight phase. The solution to the CLF-QP is a nonlinear feedback control law that achieves dynamic jumping behaviors on bipedal robots with compliance.     Immersed boundary-finite element model of fluid-structure interaction in the aortic root

    It has long been recognized that aortic root elasticity helps to ensure efficient aortic valve closure, but our understanding of the functional importance of the elasticity and geometry of the aortic root continues to evolve as increasingly detailed in vivo imaging data become available. Herein, we describe fluid-structure interaction models of the aortic root, including the aortic valve leaflets, the sinuses of Valsalva, the aortic annulus, and the sinotubular junction, that employ a version of Peskin's immersed boundary (IB) method with a finite element (FE) description of the structural elasticity. We develop both an idealized model of the root with three-fold symmetry of the aortic sinuses and valve leaflets, and a more realistic model that accounts for the differences in the sizes of the left, right, and noncoronary sinuses and corresponding valve cusps. As in earlier work, we use fiber-based models of the valve leaflets, but this study extends earlier IB models of the aortic root by employing incompressible hyperelastic models of the mechanics of the sinuses and ascending aorta using a constitutive law fit to experimental data from human aortic root tissue. In vivo pressure loading is accounted for by a backwards displacement method that determines the unloaded configurations of the root models. Our models yield realistic cardiac output at physiological pressures, with low transvalvular pressure differences during forward flow, minimal regurgitation during valve closure, and realistic pressure loads when the valve is closed during diastole. Further, results from high-resolution computations demonstrate that IB models of the aortic valve are able to produce essentially grid-converged dynamics at practical grid spacings for the high-Reynolds number flows of the aortic root

    Applications of a Biomechanical Patient Model for Adaptive Radiation Therapy

    Biomechanical patient modeling incorporates physical knowledge of the human anatomy into the image processing that is required for tracking anatomical deformations during adaptive radiation therapy, especially particle therapy. In contrast to standard image registration, this enforces bio-fidelic image transformation. In this thesis, the potential of a kinematic skeleton model and soft tissue motion propagation are investigated for crucial image analysis steps in adaptive radiation therapy. The first application is the integration of the kinematic model in a deformable image registration process (KinematicDIR). For monomodal CT scan pairs, the median target registration error based on skeleton landmarks, is smaller than (1.6 ± 0.2) mm. In addition, the successful transferability of this concept to otherwise challenging multimodal registration between CT and CBCT as well as CT and MRI scan pairs is shown to result in median target registration error in the order of 2 mm. This meets the accuracy requirement for adaptive radiation therapy and is especially interesting for MR-guided approaches. Another aspect, emerging in radiotherapy, is the utilization of deep-learning-based organ segmentation. As radiotherapy-specific labeled data is scarce, the training of such methods relies heavily on augmentation techniques. In this work, the generation of synthetically but realistically deformed scans used as Bionic Augmentation in the training phase improved the predicted segmentations by up to 15% in the Dice similarity coefficient, depending on the training strategy. Finally, it is shown that the biomechanical model can be built-up from automatic segmentations without deterioration of the KinematicDIR application. This is essential for use in a clinical workflow

    SPRK: A Low-Cost Stewart Platform For Motion Study In Surgical Robotics

    To simulate body organ motion due to breathing, heart beats, or peristaltic movements, we designed a low-cost, miniaturized SPRK (Stewart Platform Research Kit) to translate and rotate phantom tissue. This platform is 20cm x 20cm x 10cm to fit in the workspace of a da Vinci Research Kit (DVRK) surgical robot and costs $250, two orders of magnitude less than a commercial Stewart platform. The platform has a range of motion of +/- 1.27 cm in translation along x, y, and z directions and has motion modes for sinusoidal motion and breathing-inspired motion. Modular platform mounts were also designed for pattern cutting and debridement experiments. The platform's positional controller has a time-constant of 0.2 seconds and the root-mean-square error is 1.22 mm, 1.07 mm, and 0.20 mm in x, y, and z directions respectively.
