Techniques for RNA in vivo imaging in plants

Since the discovery of small RNAs and RNA silencing, RNA biology has taken a centre stage in cell and developmental biology. Small RNAs, but also mRNAs and other types of cellular and viral RNAs are processed at specific subcellular localizations. To fully understand cellular RNA metabolism and the various processes influenced byit, techniques are required that permit the sequence-specific tracking of RNAs in living cells. A variety of methods for RNA visualization have been developed since the 1990s, but plant cells pose particular challenges and not all approaches are applicable to them. On the other hand, plant RNA metabolism is particularly diverse and RNAs are even transported between cells, so RNA imaging can potentially provide many valuable insights into plant function at the cellular and tissue level. This Short Review briefly introduces the currently available techniques for plant RNA in vivo imaging and discusses their suitability for different biological questions.PostprintPeer reviewe

Side-Channel Analysis of the TERO PUF

Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) have the potential to provide a higher level of security for key storage than traditional Non-Volatile Memory (NVM). However, the susceptibility of the PUF primitives to non-invasive Side-Channel Analysis (SCA) is largely unexplored. While resistance to SCA was indicated for the Transient Effect Ring Oscillator (TERO) PUF, it was not backed by an actual assessment. To investigate the physical security of the TERO PUF, we first discuss and study the conceptual behavior of the PUF primitive to identify possible weaknesses. We support our claims by conducting an EM-analysis of a TERO design on an FPGA. When measuring TERO cells with an oscilloscope in the time domain, a Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) based approach allows to extract the relevant information in the frequency domain. By applying this method we significantly reduce the entropy of the PUF. Our analysis shows the vulnerability of not only the originally suggested TERO PUF implementation but also the impact on TERO designs in general. We discuss enhancements of the design that potentially prevent the TERO PUF from exposing the secret and point out that regarding security the TERO PUF is similar to the more area-efficient Ring Oscillator PUF

    A Reliable Low-area Low-power PUF-based Key Generator

This paper reports the implementation of a lowarea low-power 128-bit PUF-based key generation module which exploits a novel Two-Stage IDentification (TSID) cell showing a higher noise immunity then a standard SRAM cell. In addition, the pre-selection technique introduced in [1] is applied. This results in a stable PUF response in spite of process and environmental variations thus requiring a low cost error correction algorithm in order to generate a reliable key. The adopted PUF cell array includes 1056 cells and shows a power consumption per bit of 4:2 W at 100MHz with an area per bit of 2:4 m2. In order to evaluate reliability and unpredictability of the generated key, extensive tests have been performed both on the raw PUF data and on the final key. The raw PUF data after pre-selection show a worst case intra-chip Hamming distance below 0:7%. After a total of more than 5 109 key reconstructions, no single fail has been detected
