The Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are highly distributed networks of tiny, light-weight wireless nodes, placed in large numbers to monitor the environment or system. Monitoring the system includes the measurement of physical parameters such as pressure, temperature, relative humidity and passing their data to the main node (sink). WSN faces various security attacks which can affect the overall performance and security of the system. So, it is necessary to detect and prevent the attacks on WSN. Intrusion Detection is one of the major and efficient method against attacks. Intrusion Detection Systems can act as a second line of defence and it provides security primitives to prevent attacks against computer networks. This paper focuses on a hybrid approach for intrusion detection system (IDS) based on data mining techniques. The approach is clustering analysis with the aim to improve the detection rate and decrease the false alarm rate

Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology has grown in importance in recent years. All WSN implementations need secure data transmission between sensor nodes and base stations. Sensor node attacks introduce new threats to the WSN. As a result, an appropriate Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is required in WSN for defending against security attacks and detecting attacks on sensor nodes. In this study, we use the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) for addressing security services in WSN by identifying IDS with a network size of more or less 20 nodes and introducing 10% malicious nodes. The method described above is used on Cooja in the VMware virtual machine Workstation with the InstantContiki2.7 operating system. To track the movement of nodes, find network attacks, and spot dropped packets during IDS in WSN, an algorithm is implemented in the Network Simulator (NS2) using the Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) protocol in the Linux operating system. Keywords—Intrusion Detection Systems, wireless sensor networks, Cooja simulator, sensor nodes, NS

Web spider defense technique in wireless sensor networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are currently widely used in many environments. Some of them gather many critical data, which should be protected from intruders. Generally, when an intruder is detected in the WSN, its connection is immediately stopped. But this way does not let the network administrator gather information about the attacker and/or its purposes. In this paper, we present a bioinspired system that uses the procedure taken by the web spider when it wants to catch its prey. We will explain how all steps performed by the web spider are included in our system and we will detail the algorithm and protocol procedure. A real test bench has been implemented in order to validate our system. It shows the performance for different response times, the CPU and RAM consumption, and the average and maximum values for ping and tracert time responses using constant delay and exponential jitter. This work has been partially supported by the "Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovacion", through the "Plan Nacional de I+D+i 2008-2011" in the "Subprograma de Proyectos de Investigacion Fundamental", Project TEC2011-27516.Cánovas Solbes, A.; Lloret, J.; Macias Lopez, EM.; Suarez Sarmiento, A. ABSTRACT In recent years, the applications based on the Wireless Sensor Networks are growing very fast. The application areas include agriculture, healthcare, military, hospitality management, mobiles and many others. So these networks are very important for us and the security of the network from the various attacks is also a more important issue in WSN application now days. Stopping these attacks or enhancing the security of the WSN system various intrusion detection policies are developed till date to detect the node/s that is/are not working normally. Out of various detection techniques three major categories explored in this paper are Anomaly detection, Misuse detection and Specificationbased detection. Here in this review paper various attacks on Wireless Sensor Networks and existing Intrusion detection techniques are discussed to detect the compromised node/s. The paper also provides a brief discussion about the characteristics of the Wireless Sensor Networks and the classification of attacks

A novel intrusion detection framework for wireless sensor networks

Abstract Vehicle cloud is a new idea that uses the benefits of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the concept of cloud computing to provide better services to the community. It is important to secure a sensor network to achieve better performance of the vehicle cloud. Wireless sensor networks are a soft target for intruders or adversaries to launch lethal attacks in its present configuration. In this paper, a novel intrusion detection framework is proposed for securing wireless sensor networks from routing attacks. The proposed system works in a distributed environment to detect intrusions by collaborating with the neighboring nodes. It works in two modes: online prevention allows safeguarding from those abnormal nodes that are already declared as malicious while offline detection finds those nodes that are being compromised by an adversary during the next epoch of time. Simulation results show that the proposed specification-based detection scheme performs extremely well and achieves high intrusion detection rate and low false positive rate

FUZZY BASED SECURITY ALGORITHM FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS IN THE INTERNET OF THINGS PARADIGM

Published ThesisThe world is embracing the idea of Internet of Things and Industrial Revolution 4.0. However, this acceptance of computerised evolution is met with a myriad of challenges, where consumers of this technology are also growing ever so anxious about the security of their personal data as well as reliability of data collected by the millions and even billions of sensors surrounding them. Wireless sensor networks are the main baseline technology driving Internet of things; by their very inherent nature, these networks are too vulnerable to attacks and yet the network security tools designed for conventional computer networks are not effective in countering these attacks. Wireless sensors have low computational resources, may be highly mobile and in most cases, these networks do not have a central point which can be marked as an authentication point for the sensors, any node can join or leave whenever they want. This leaves the sensors and the internet of things applications depending on them highly susceptible to attacks, which may compromise consumer information and leave security breaches in situation that need absolute security such as homes or even the cars they drive. There are many possibilities of things that could go wrong when hackers gain control of sensors in a car or a house. There have been many solutions offered to address security of Wireless Sensor Networks; however, most of those solutions are often not customised for African context. Given that most African countries have not kept pace with the development of these underlying technologies, blanket adoption of the solutions developed for consumption in the developed world has not yielded optimal results. The focus of this research was the development of an Intrusion Detection System that works in a hierarchical network structured Wireless Sensor Network, where cluster heads oversee groups of nodes and relay their data packets all the way to the sink node. This is a reactive Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that makes use of a fuzzy logic based algorithm for verification of intrusion detections. This system borrows characteristics of traditional Wireless Sensor Networks in that it is hosted external to the nodes; that is, on a computer or server connected to the sink node. The rational for this is the premise that developing the system in this manner optimises the power and processing resource of nodes because no part of the IDS is found in the nodes and they are left to focus purely on sensing. The Intrusion Detection System makes use of remote Over The Air programming to communicate with compromised nodes, to either shut down or reboot and is designed with the ZigBee protocol in mind. Additionally, this Intrusion Detection System is intended to being part of a larger Internet of Things integration framework being proposed at the Central University of Technology. This framework is aimed at developing an Internet of Things adoption strategy customised for African needs and regionally local consumers. To evaluate the effectiveness of the solution, the rate of false detections being picked out by the security algorithm were reduced through the use of fuzzy logic systems; this resulted in an accuracies of above 90 %. The algorithm is also very light when asymptotic notation is applied, making it ideal for Wireless Sensors. Lastly, we also put forward the Xbee version of the Triple Modular Redundancy architecture, customised for Wireless sensor networks in order to beef-up on the security solution presented in this dissertation

Wireless sensor networks are the result of multiple technological advances in electronics, nanotechnology, wireless communications, computing power, network development and robotics. Compose distributed systems devices usually composed of integrated, including at least CPU, radio, and sensors / actuators number. The wireless sensor networks (WSN) heterogeneous networks are formed by sensors, gateways and backend resources very limited physical. The sensors can measure parameters such as temperature, movement, lighting, humidity, etc..; the gateways establish the link with networks traditional and familiar. The back ends are responsible for the processing and display unit the captured data. Although several studies showed WSN middleware, has not been achieved with this industry acceptance due mainly to the different methodologies programming. The teams consist of WSN lowest consumption, costs and form factors. The reality is quite different environments applications are supported with equipment more powerful and fed by redundant power networks. The current article describes then implementation of lesser algorithm for analysis of network intrusion detection system in wireless sensor networks
