Exploring Intuitive Lifelog Retrieval and Interaction Modes in Virtual Reality with vitrivr-VR

    Get PDF
The multimodal nature of lifelog data collections poses unique challenges for multimedia management and retrieval systems. The Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) offers an annual evaluation platform for such interactive retrieval systems. They compete against one another in finding items of interest within a set time frame. In this paper, we present the multimedia retrieval system vitrivr-vr, the latest addition to the vitrivr stack, which participated in the LSC in recent years. vitrivr-vr leverages the 3D space in virtual reality (VR) to offer novel retrieval and user interaction models, which we describe with a special focus on design decisions taken for the participation in the LSC

We present an enhanced version of Exquisitor, our interactive and scalable media exploration system. At its core, Exquisitor is an interactive learning system using relevance feedback on media items to build a model of the users' information need. Relying on efficient media representation and indexing, it facilitates real-time user interaction. The new features for the Lifelog Search Challenge 2020 include support for timeline browsing, search functionality for finding positive examples, and significant interface improvements. Participation in the Lifelog Search Challenge allows us to compare our paradigm, relying predominantly on interactive learning, with more traditional search-based multimedia retrieval systems

VRLE: Lifelog Interaction Prototype in Virtual Reality:Lifelog Search Challenge at ACM ICMR 2020

The Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) invites researchers to share their prototypes for interactive lifelog retrieval and encourages competition to develop and evaluate effective methodologies to achieve this. With this paper we present a novel approach to visual lifelog exploration based on our research to date utilising virtual reality as a medium for interactive information retrieval. The VRLE prototype presented is an iteration on a previous system which won the first LSC competition at ACM ICMR 2018

For the LMRT task at ImageCLEFlifelog 2020, LIFER 3.0, a new version of the LIFER system with improvements in the user interface and system affordance, is used and evaluated via feedback from a user experiment. In addition, since both tasks share a common dataset, LIFER 3.0 borrows some features from the LifeSeeker system deployed for the Lifelog Search Challenge; which are free-text search, visual similarity search and elastic sequencing filter. For the SPLL task, we proposed a naive solution by capturing the rate of change in running speed and weight, then obtain the target changes for each subtask using average computation and linear regression model. The results presented in this paper can be used as comparative baselines for other participants in the ImageCLEFlifelog 2020 challenge.publishedVersio

ViRMA: Virtual Reality Multimedia Analytics at LSC 2021

In this paper we describe the first iteration of the ViRMA prototype system, a novel approach to multimedia analysis in virtual reality and inspired by the M3 data model. We intend to evaluate our approach via the Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) to serve as a benchmark against other multimedia analytics systems
