SODA: Generating SQL for Business Users
The purpose of data warehouses is to enable business analysts to make better
decisions. Over the years the technology has matured and data warehouses have
become extremely successful. As a consequence, more and more data has been
added to the data warehouses and their schemas have become increasingly
complex. These systems still work great in order to generate pre-canned
reports. However, with their current complexity, they tend to be a poor match
for non tech-savvy business analysts who need answers to ad-hoc queries that
were not anticipated. This paper describes the design, implementation, and
experience of the SODA system (Search over DAta Warehouse). SODA bridges the
gap between the business needs of analysts and the technical complexity of
current data warehouses. SODA enables a Google-like search experience for data
warehouses by taking keyword queries of business users and automatically
generating executable SQL. The key idea is to use a graph pattern matching
algorithm that uses the metadata model of the data warehouse. Our results with
real data from a global player in the financial services industry show that
SODA produces queries with high precision and recall, and makes it much easier
for business users to interactively explore highly-complex data warehouses.Comment: VLDB201
Big Food and Soda Versus Public Health: Industry Litigation Against Local Government Regulations to Promote Healthy Diets
Diets high in fats, sugars, and sodium are contributing to alarming levels of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers throughout the United States. Sugary drinks, which include beverages that contain added caloric sweeteners such as flavored milks, fruit drinks, sports drinks, and sodas, are the largest source of added sugar in the American diet and an important causative factor for obesity and other diet-related diseases.
City and county governments have emerged as key innovators to promote healthier diets, adopting menu labeling laws to facilitate informed choices and soda taxes, warnings labels, and a soda portion cap to discourage consumption. These measures raise tension between the public health promotion and the food and beverage industryâs interests in maximizing profits. This article analyzes the food and beverage industryâs efforts to undermine local government nutrition promotion measures, including lobbying, funding scientific research, public messaging, and litigation. It examines four case studies (New York Cityâs soda portion cap, San Franciscoâs soda warnings ordinance, and soda taxes in Philadelphia and Cook County), and distills steps that local governments can take to address industry opposition and help ensure the legal viability and political sustainability of key public health interventions

Aggregation and the Role of Trusted Third Parties in SME E-Business Engagement: A Regional Policy Issue
YesIt is against the background of low engagement by SMEs in e-business that this paper seeks to highlight the potential importance of aggregation and of the role of trusted third parties in facilitating higher levels of involvement. The paper is based on an ongoing SME e-business research programme and reports on some recent research on SMEs that were using high complexity e-business applications and explores the extent to which the research findings could address the core concern of low engagement. This qualitative case study based research includes analysis of data collected from 13 community intermediaries, acting as trusted third parties. It concludes that the role of community intermediaries appears to be central to the adoption of critical e-aggregation applications provided by service providers. For policymakers, this important role of critical e-aggregation applications in facilitating e-business engagement by SMEs has emerged as part of this research but there is limited evidence of policy initiatives that reflect this
History of cosmic evolution with modified Gauss-Bonnet-dilatonic coupled term
Gauss-Bonnet-dilatonic coupling in four dimension plays an important role to
explain late time cosmic evolution. However, this term is an outcome of low
energy string effective action and thus ought to be important in the early
universe too. Unfortunately, phase-space formulation of such a theory does not
exist in the literature due to branching. We therefore consider a modified
theory of gravity, which contains a nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor sector
in addition to higher order scalar curvature invariant term with
Gauss-Bonnet-dilatonic coupling. Such an action unifies early inflation with
late-time cosmic acceleration. Quantum version of the theory is also
well-behaved.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, To appear in EPJC (2017
California FreshWorks Food Access Report: An Examination of Three Northgate Gonzalez Grocery Store Investments
In order to better understand and maximize FreshWorks' impact, The California Endowment commissioned a two-year evaluation of the program's food access, social, and economic outcomes. The evaluation focused on the impact of three FreshWorks investments made with the purpose of increasing access to healthy food. The evaluation examined three new Northgate Gonzålez Markets which received New Markets Tax Credit financing through FreshWorks. To understand the influence of FreshWorks on increasing access to healthy food and changing food purchase and consumption patterns in underserved communities, the evaluation team examined two key questions: 1. Are the new retail food stores meeting unmet need for grocery services? 2. How do community members perceive the benefits and/or negative consequences of the new stores
