    The Trajectory of IT in Healthcare at HICSS: A Literature Review, Analysis, and Future Directions

    Research has extensively demonstrated that healthcare industry has rapidly implemented and adopted information technology in recent years. Research in health information technology (HIT), which represents a major component of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, demonstrates similar findings. In this paper, review the literature to better understand the work on HIT that researchers have conducted in HICSS from 2008 to 2017. In doing so, we identify themes, methods, technology types, research populations, context, and emerged research gaps from the reviewed literature. With much change and development in the HIT field and varying levels of adoption, this review uncovers, catalogs, and analyzes the research in HIT at HICSS in this ten-year period and provides future directions for research in the field

    'License to VIT’ - A Design Taxonomy for Visual Inquiry Tools

    Visual Inquiry Tools are valuable assets to work conjointly on an ill-structured or wicked problem and solve it creatively. With visual inquiry tools, designers can sketch the problem-space of an artifact-to-be-designed and generate solutions in a priori defined ontological elements. While there exists guidance in how visual inquiry tools should be designed content-wise, there is a lack of clarification on the design options available to design them. Subsequently, the paper proposes a taxonomy of visual inquiry tools outlining options for their design. We do this by incorporating a sample of 24 visual inquiry tools developed in the scientific literature corpus as well as 15 through empirical example

    Personalized Employee Training Based on Learning Styles Using Unsupervised Machine Learning

    Advancement in technology, artificial intelligence, and machine learning have resulted in an explosion in the creation of tech-enabled training solutions over the past decade, contributing to the popularity of personalized learning. This research advocates for a transition away from archaic, rote learning paradigms and toward individualized employee learning experiences in which instructional styles and training tactics are tailored to the requirements of each individual employee rather than standard lesson preparation that exist today. This technique can also foster enjoyable and engaging training environments that benefit both employees and the organizations. We applied unsupervised machine learning algorithm, namely, K-means, and Hierarchical clustering algorithms to classify 1000 employees into different clusters based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles Model (FSLSM). As expected, no one of the employees could be precisely classified into a single category, and they demonstrated a variety of learning methods and tactics. The experiments showed 3 significant clusters across the different pairs of Processing, Input, Understanding, and Perception dimensions of the FSLSM. The findings suggest that employees can be grouped into at least 3 clusters to create personalized training materials and approaches for each group. We also discussed suitable instruction techniques, contents, and paths for each cluster. The proposed model and the findings would work in both digital and offline settings. &nbsp

    Knowledge, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Systems at HICSS

    This paper presents an overview and history of the knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurial systems (KIES) track and the knowledge and related systems research community at the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). This community began as a task force that examined organizational memory in HICSS-27. It has since evolved into a mini-track, a research cluster, and, finally, a full research track that encompasses research knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurial systems. In this paper, we acquaint knowledge system researchers with a research community that has leveraged HICSS to develop a rich history of high-quality scholastic inquiry in the knowledge system, knowledge management, innovation systems, entrepreneurial systems, organizational memory, and organizational learning research areas

    Learning within Digital Media: Investigating the Relationships Between Student Citation Networks, Assignment Structures, and Learning Outcomes

    Students are comfortable sharing digital content with others, yet the effect of sharing of digital media for learning remains largely unexplored. Building on research in social network analysis and learning analytics, this research explores the use and sharing of digital media in learning activities, analyzing the effects of the design of the learning activities on the resulting networks of students and their cited resources, and exploring relationships between attributes of these citation networks and students’ perceptions of the learning outcomes. Results suggest that the extent to which an assignment is well-structured and converges towards a single solution positively influences the density and clustering coefficient of the resulting citation network, and that these network measures in turn have a positive influence on students’ perceptions of learning from the assignment

    Adaptations of electronic health records to activate physicians’ knowledge: how can patient centered care be improved through technology?

    The United States of America is known for the rising costs of its healthcare and declining quality of care. While the push towards the integration of the healthcare information infrastructure is seen to be an important step towards addressing problem of the rising costs of healthcare and falling quality of care, the integration of EHR (Electronic Health Records), the central component of this infrastructure, remains a challenge. It appears that physicians are at the center of this bottleneck. The literature suggests that the reasons for the limited use relate to policy, financial and usability considerations, but it does not provide an understanding of reasons for physicians’ limited interaction and adaptation of EHR. In this paper, we argue that in order to be able to use the technology to provide better healthcare, physicians need to be able to activate their knowledge through it. We investigate process of adaptations that physicians go through when trying to use electronic health records. Our findings indicate that physician’s knowledge identities need to align with the functionalities made available through the technology. We draw upon the framework of knowledge activation in order to understand how physicians use their knowledge to provide better healthcare. Following an analysis of qualitative data, collected in a case study at a hospital using interviews, this research shows how physician’s adaptations of EHR activate their knowledge for the purpose of improving healthcare provision. The key contribution of this research is in discovering the ways in which physicians’ adaptation of technology can enable knowledge activation
