    SAR tomography consists in exploiting multiple images from the same area acquired from a slightly different angle to retrieve the 3-D distribution of the complex reflectivity on the ground. As the transmitted waves are coherent, the desired spatial information (along with the vertical axis) is coded in the phase of the pixels. Many methods have been proposed to retrieve this information in the past years. However, the natural redundancies of the scene are generally not exploited to improve the tomographic estimation step. This Ph.D. presents new approaches to regularize the estimated reflectivity density obtained through SAR tomography by exploiting the urban geometrical structures.La tomographie SAR exploite plusieurs acquisitions d'une même zone acquises d'un point de vue légerement différent pour reconstruire la densité complexe de réflectivité au sol. Cette technique d'imagerie s'appuyant sur l'émission et la réception d'ondes électromagnétiques cohérentes, les données analysées sont complexes et l'information spatiale manquante (selon la verticale) est codée dans la phase. De nombreuse méthodes ont pu être proposées pour retrouver cette information. L'utilisation des redondances naturelles à certains milieux n'est toutefois généralement pas exploitée pour améliorer l'estimation tomographique. Cette thèse propose d'utiliser l'information structurelle propre aux structures urbaines pour régulariser les densités de réflecteurs obtenues par cette technique

    Compressive sensing reconstruction of 3D wet refractivity based on GNSS and InSAR observations

    In this work, the reconstruction quality of an approach for neutrospheric water vapor tomography based on Slant Wet Delays (SWDs) obtained from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is investigated. The novelties of this approach are (1) the use of both absolute GNSS and absolute InSAR SWDs for tomography and (2) the solution of the tomographic system by means of compressive sensing (CS). The tomographic reconstruction is performed based on (i) a synthetic SWD dataset generated using wet refractivity information from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and (ii) a real dataset using GNSS and InSAR SWDs. Thus, the validation of the achieved results focuses (i) on a comparison of the refractivity estimates with the input WRF refractivities and (ii) on radiosonde profiles. In case of the synthetic dataset, the results show that the CS approach yields a more accurate and more precise solution than least squares (LSQ). In addition, the benefit of adding synthetic InSAR SWDs into the tomographic system is analyzed. When applying CS, adding synthetic InSAR SWDs into the tomographic system improves the solution both in magnitude and in scattering. When solving the tomographic system by means of LSQ, no clear behavior is observed. In case of the real dataset, the estimated refractivities of both methodologies show a consistent behavior although the LSQ and CS solution strategies differ

    Compressed sensing of monostatic and multistatic SAR

    In this paper we study the impact of sparse aperture data collection of a SAR sensor on reconstruction quality of a scene of interest. Different mono and multi-static SAR measurement configurations produce different Fourier sampling patterns. These patterns reflect different spectral and spatial diversity trade-offs that must be made during task planning. Compressed sensing theory argues that the mutual coherence of the measurement probes is related to the reconstruction performance of sparse domains. With this motivation we compare the mutual coherence and corresponding reconstruction behavior of various mono-static and ultra-narrow band multi-static configurations, which trade-off frequency for geometric diversity. We investigate if such simple metrics are related to SAR reconstruction quality in an obvious way

    Observing geometry effects on a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based water vapor tomography solved by least squares and by compressive sensing

    In this work, the effect of the observing geometry on the tomographic reconstruction quality of both a regularized least squares (LSQ) approach and a compressive sensing (CS) approach for water vapor tomography is compared based on synthetic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) slant wet delay (SWD) estimates. In this context, the term “observing geometry” mainly refers to the number of GNSS sites situated within a specific study area subdivided into a certain number of volumetric pixels (voxels) and to the number of signal directions available at each GNSS site. The novelties of this research are (1) the comparison of the observing geometry\u27s effects on the tomographic reconstruction accuracy when using LSQ or CS for the solution of the tomographic system and (2) the investigation of the effect of the signal directions\u27 variability on the tomographic reconstruction. The tomographic reconstruction is performed based on synthetic SWD data sets generated, for many samples of various observing geometry settings, based on wet refractivity information from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The validation of the achieved results focuses on a comparison of the refractivity estimates with the input WRF refractivities. The results show that the recommendation of Champollion et al. (2004) to discretize the analyzed study area into voxels with horizontal sizes comparable to the mean GNSS intersite distance represents a good rule of thumb for both LSQ- and CS-based tomography solutions. In addition, this research shows that CS needs a variety of at least 15 signal directions per site in order to estimate the refractivity field more accurately and more precisely than LSQ. Therefore, the use of CS is particularly recommended for water vapor tomography applications for which a high number of multi-GNSS SWD estimates are available

    Blur resolved OCT: full-range interferometric synthetic aperture microscopy through dispersion encoding

    We present a computational method for full-range interferometric synthetic aperture microscopy (ISAM) under dispersion encoding. With this, one can effectively double the depth range of optical coherence tomography (OCT), whilst dramatically enhancing the spatial resolution away from the focal plane. To this end, we propose a model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) method, where ISAM is directly considered in an optimization approach, and we make the discovery that sparsity promoting regularization effectively recovers the full-range signal. Within this work, we adopt an optimal nonuniform discrete fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) implementation of ISAM, which is both fast and numerically stable throughout iterations. We validate our method with several complex samples, scanned with a commercial SD-OCT system with no hardware modification. With this, we both demonstrate full-range ISAM imaging, and significantly outperform combinations of existing methods.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures.     ATASI-Net: An Efficient Sparse Reconstruction Network for Tomographic SAR Imaging with Adaptive Threshold

    Tomographic SAR technique has attracted remarkable interest for its ability of three-dimensional resolving along the elevation direction via a stack of SAR images collected from different cross-track angles. The emerged compressed sensing (CS)-based algorithms have been introduced into TomoSAR considering its super-resolution ability with limited samples. However, the conventional CS-based methods suffer from several drawbacks, including weak noise resistance, high computational complexity, and complex parameter fine-tuning. Aiming at efficient TomoSAR imaging, this paper proposes a novel efficient sparse unfolding network based on the analytic learned iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (ALISTA) architecture with adaptive threshold, named Adaptive Threshold ALISTA-based Sparse Imaging Network (ATASI-Net). The weight matrix in each layer of ATASI-Net is pre-computed as the solution of an off-line optimization problem, leaving only two scalar parameters to be learned from data, which significantly simplifies the training stage. In addition, adaptive threshold is introduced for each azimuth-range pixel, enabling the threshold shrinkage to be not only layer-varied but also element-wise. Moreover, the final learned thresholds can be visualized and combined with the SAR image semantics for mutual feedback. Finally, extensive experiments on simulated and real data are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method
