    Estimation of bearing fault severity in line-connected and inverter-fed three-phase induction motors

    Producción CientíficaThis paper addresses a comprehensive evaluation of a bearing fault evolution and its consequent prediction concerning the remaining useful life. The proper prediction of bearing faults in their early stage is a crucial factor for predictive maintenance and mainly for the production management schedule. The detection and estimation of the progressive evolution of a bearing fault are performed by monitoring the amplitude of the current signals at the time domain. Data gathered from line-fed and inverter-fed three-phase induction motors were used to validate the proposed approach. To assess classification accuracy and fault estimation, the models described in this paper are investigated by using Artificial Neural Networks models. The paper also provides process flowcharts and classification tables to present the prognostic models used to estimate the remaining useful life of a defective bearing.     Circular domain features based condition monitoring for low speed slewing bearing

    This paper presents a novel application of circular domain features calculation based condition monitoring method for low rotational speed slewing bearing. The method employs data reduction process using piecewise aggregate approximation (PAA) to detect frequency alteration in the bearing signal when the fault occurs. From the processed data, circular domain features such as circular mean, circular variance, circular skewness and circular kurtosis are calculated and monitored. It is shown that the slight changes of bearing condition during operation can be identified more clearly in circular domain analysis compared to time domain analysis and other advanced signal processing methods such as wavelet decomposition and empirical mode decomposition (EMD) allowing the engineer to better schedule the maintenance work. Four circular domain features were shown to consistently and clearly identify the onset (initiation) of fault from the peak feature value which is not clearly observable in time domain features. The application of the method is demonstrated with simulated data, laboratory slewing bearing data and industrial bearing data from Coal Bridge Reclaimer used in a local steel mill

    Classification of bearing faults through time-frequency analysis and image processing

    The present work proposes a new technique for bearing fault classification that combines time-frequency analysis with image processing. This technique uses vibration signals from bearing housings to detect bearing conditions and classify the faults. By means of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), each vibration signal is decomposed into Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is then performed on the matrix of the decomposed IMFs and the important principal components are chosen. The spectrogram is obtained for each component by means of the Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) to obtain an image that represents the time-frequency relationship of the main components of the analyzed signal. Furthermore, Image Moments are extracted from the spectrogram images of principal components in order to obtain an array of features for each signal that can be handled by the classification algorithm. 8 images are selected for each signal and 17 moments for each image, so an array of 136 features is associated with every signal. Finally, the classification is performed using a standard machine learning technique, i.e. Support Vector Machine (SVM), in the proposed technique. The dataset used in this work include data collected for various rotating speeds and loads, in order to obtain a set of different operating conditions, by a Roller Bearing Faults Simulator. The results have shown that the developed technique provides classification effectively, with a single classifier, of bearing faults characterized by different rotating speeds and different loads

    Diagnosis of low-speed bearing degradation using acoustic emission techniques

    It is widely acknowledged that bearing failures are the primary reason for breakdowns in rotating machinery. These failures are extremely costly, particularly in terms of lost production. Roller bearings are widely used in industrial machinery and need to be maintained in good condition to ensure the continuing efficiency, effectiveness, and profitability of the production process. The research presented here is an investigation of the use of acoustic emission (AE) to monitor bearing conditions at low speeds. Many machines, particularly large, expensive machines operate at speeds below 100 rpm, and such machines are important to the industry. However, the overwhelming proportion of studies have investigated the use of AE techniques for condition monitoring of higher-speed machines (typically several hundred rpm, or even higher). Few researchers have investigated the application of these techniques to low-speed machines (<100 rpm), This PhD addressed this omission and has established which, of the available, AE techniques are suitable for the detection of incipient faults and measurement of fault growth in low-speed bearings. The first objective of this research program was to assess the applicability of AE techniques to monitor low-speed bearings. It was found that the measured statistical parameters successfully monitored bearing conditions at low speeds (10-100 rpm). The second objective was to identify which commonly used statistical parameters derived from the AE signal (RMS, kurtosis, amplitude and counts) could identify the onset of a fault in either race. It was found that the change in AE amplitude and AE RMS could identify the presence of a small fault seeded into either the inner or the outer races. However, the severe attenuation of the signal from the inner race meant that, while AE amplitude and RMS could readily identify the incipient fault, kurtosis and the AE counts could not. Thus, more attention needs to be given to analysing the signal from the inner race. The third objective was to identify a measure that would assess the degree of severity of the fault. However, once the defect was established, it was found that of the parameters used only AE RMS was sensitive to defect size. The fourth objective was to assess whether the AE signal is able to detect defects located at either the centre or edge of the outer race of a bearing rotating at low speeds. It is found that all the measured AE parameters had higher values when the defect was seeded in the middle of the outer race, possibly due to the shorter path traversed by the signal between source and sensor which gave a lower attenuation than when the defect was on the edge of the outer race. Moreover, AE can detect the defect at both locations, which confirmed the applicability of the AE to monitor the defects at any location on the outer race

    Bearing fault diagnosis via kernel matrix construction based support vector machine

    A novel approach on kernel matrix construction for support vector machine (SVM) is proposed to detect rolling element bearing fault efficiently. First, multi-scale coefficient matrix is achieved by processing vibration sample signal with continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Next, singular value decomposition (SVD) is applied to calculate eigenvector from wavelet coefficient matrix as sample signal feature vector. Two kernel matrices i.e. training kernel and predicting kernel, are then constructed in a novel way, which can reveal intrinsic similarity among samples and make it feasible to solve nonlinear classification problems in a high dimensional feature space. To validate its diagnosis performance, kernel matrix construction based SVM (KMCSVM) classifier is compared with three SVM classifiers i.e. classification tree kernel based SVM (CTKSVM), linear kernel based SVM (L-SVM) and radial basis function based SVM (RBFSVM), to identify different locations and severities of bearing fault. The experimental results indicate that KMCSVM has better classification capability than other methods

    Prognostic-based Life Extension Methodology with Application to Power Generation Systems

    Practicable life extension of engineering systems would be a remarkable application of prognostics. This research proposes a framework for prognostic-base life extension. This research investigates the use of prognostic data to mobilize the potential residual life. The obstacles in performing life extension include: lack of knowledge, lack of tools, lack of data, and lack of time. This research primarily considers using the acoustic emission (AE) technology for quick-response diagnostic. To be specific, an important feature of AE data was statistically modeled to provide quick, robust and intuitive diagnostic capability. The proposed model was successful to detect the out of control situation when the data of faulty bearing was applied. This research also highlights the importance of self-healing materials. One main component of the proposed life extension framework is the trend analysis module. This module analyzes the pattern of the time-ordered degradation measures. The trend analysis is helpful not only for early fault detection but also to track the improvement in the degradation rate. This research considered trend analysis methods for the prognostic parameters, degradation waveform and multivariate data. In this respect, graphical methods was found appropriate for trend detection of signal features. Hilbert Huang Transform was applied to analyze the trends in waveforms. For multivariate data, it was realized that PCA is able to indicate the trends in the data if accompanied by proper data processing. In addition, two algorithms are introduced to address non-monotonic trends. It seems, both algorithms have the potential to treat the non-monotonicity in degradation data. Although considerable research has been devoted to developing prognostics algorithms, rather less attention has been paid to post-prognostic issues such as maintenance decision making. A multi-objective optimization model is presented for a power generation unit. This model proves the ability of prognostic models to balance between power generation and life extension. In this research, the confronting objective functions were defined as maximizing profit and maximizing service life. The decision variables include the shaft speed and duration of maintenance actions. The results of the optimization models showed clearly that maximizing the service life requires lower shaft speed and longer maintenance time

    Application of variational mode decomposition in vibration analysis of machine components

    Monitoring and diagnosis of machinery in maintenance are often undertaken using vibration analysis. The machine vibration signal is invariably complex and diverse, and thus useful information and features are difficult to extract. Variational mode decomposition (VMD) is a recent signal processing method that able to extract some of important features from machine vibration signal. The performance of the VMD method depends on the selection of its input parameters, especially the mode number and balancing parameter (also known as quadratic penalty term). However, the current VMD method is still using a manual effort to extract the input parameters where it subjects to interpretation of experienced experts. Hence, machine diagnosis becomes time consuming and prone to error. The aim of this research was to propose an automated parameter selection method for selecting the VMD input parameters. The proposed method consisted of two-stage selections where the first stage selection was used to select the initial mode number and the second stage selection was used to select the optimized mode number and balancing parameter. A new machine diagnosis approach was developed, named as VMD Differential Evolution Algorithm (VMDEA)-Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). Vibration signal datasets were then reconstructed using VMDEA and the multi-domain features consisted of time-domain, frequency-domain and multi-scale fuzzy entropy were extracted. It was demonstrated that the VMDEA method was able to reduce the computational time about 14% to 53% as compared to VMD-Genetic Algorithm (GA), VMD-Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and VMD-Differential Evolution (DE) approaches for bearing, shaft and gear. It also exhibited a better convergence with about two to nine less iterations as compared to VMD-GA, VMD-PSO and VMD-DE for bearing, shaft and gear. The VMDEA-ELM was able to illustrate higher classification accuracy about 11% to 20% than Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD)-ELM, Ensemble EMD (EEMD)-ELM and Complimentary EEMD (CEEMD)-ELM for bearing shaft and gear. The bearing datasets from Case Western Reserve University were tested with VMDEA-ELM model and compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM)-Dempster-Shafer (DS), EEMD Optimal Mode Multi-scale Fuzzy Entropy Fault Diagnosis (EOMSMFD), Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT)-Local Characteristic-scale Decomposition (LCD)- ELM, and Arctangent S-shaped PSO least square support vector machine (ATSWPLM) models in term of its classification accuracy. The VMDEA-ELM model demonstrates better diagnosis accuracy with small differences between 2% to 4% as compared to EOMSMFD and WPT-LCD-ELM but less diagnosis accuracy in the range of 4% to 5% as compared to SVM-DS and ATSWPLM. The diagnosis approach VMDEA-ELM was also able to provide faster classification performance about 6 40 times faster than Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). This study provides an improved solution in determining an optimized VMD parameters by using VMDEA. It also demonstrates a more accurate and effective diagnostic approach for machine maintenance using VMDEA-ELM

    Condition monitoring of machinery is one of the most important aspects of many modern industries. With the rapid advancement of science and technology, machines are becoming increasingly complex. Moreover, an exponential increase of demand is leading an increasing requirement of machine output. As a result, in most modern industries, machines have to work for 24 hours a day. All these factors are leading to the deterioration of machine health in a higher rate than before. Breakdown of the key components of a machine such as bearing, gearbox or rollers can cause a catastrophic effect both in terms of financial and human costs.
