From OPIMA to MPEG IPMP-X: A standard's history across R&D projects

This paper describes the work performed by a number of companies and universities who have been working as a consortium under the umbrella of the European Union Framework Programme 5 (FP5), Information Society Technologies (IST) research program, in order to provide a set of Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies and architectures, aiming at helping to reduce the copyright circumvention risks, that have been threatening the music and film industries in their transition from the “analogue” to “digital” age. The paper starts by addressing some of the earlier standardization efforts in the DRM arena, namely, Open Platform Initiative for Multimedia Access (OPIMA). One of the described FP5 IST projects, Open Components for Controlled Access to Multimedia Material (OCCAMM), has developed the OPIMA vision. The paper addresses also the Motion Pictures Expert Group—MPEG DRM work, starting from the MPEG Intellectual Propriety Management and Protection—IPMP “Hooks”, towards the MPEG IPMP Extensions, which has originated the first DRM-related standard (MPEG-4 Part 13, called IPMP Extensions or IPMP-X) ever released by ISO up to the present days.2 The paper clarifies how the FP5 IST project MPEG Open Security for Embedded Systems (MOSES), has extended the OPIMA interfaces and architecture to achieve compliance with the MPEG IPMP-X standard, and how it has contributed to the achievement of “consensus” and to the specification, implementation (Reference Software) and validation (Conformance Testing) of the MPEG IPMP-X standard.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Zionism: an Ethnic Nationalist Movement of the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries

This research traces the cultural, religious and organizational roots of the Zionist movement from the First Zionist Congress in 1897 through the Balfour Declaration in 1917. Using newspaper articles, diaries and journals of Zionist leaders, archives from the World Zionist Organization, and various secondary sources, this thesis argues that the Zionist Movement from 1897-1917, should be considered one of the ethnic nationalist movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It addition, it seeks to show that religion has a unique and essential role in unifying people groups toward nationalist tendencies. Using key elements of religious and cultural tradition, Zionist organizations brought recognition of the Zionist movement to the world stage and laid the foundation for the creation of the State of Israel

Authentication and privacy in mobile web services

This thesis looks at the issue of authentication and privacy in mobile Web services. The work in this thesis builds on GSM and UMTS security framework to develop security protocols for mobile Web services environment. The thesis initially highlights some core principles of designing security protocols in such environment. The next two chapters look at the core technologies and building blocks in Web services systems and the core security features in mobile networks mainly GSM and UMTS. Registration and authentication were identified as security issues in federated systems. Proposed solutions were developed utilizing XML security mechanisms with SIM card security in GSM environment to address these issues. Also a novel system was proposed in which it is possible for a mobile user to securely authenticate and have full anonymity as far as the service providers are concerned; however it is possible for a trusted authority to reveal the identity of the user if he or she is suspected of illegal activities. The next section analyze in detail the Generic Authentication Architecture from 3GPP. Combining SAML with the Generic Authentication Architecture, we propose a novel "generic mobile Web service platform" for M-Commerce. Various solutions have been proposed to address privacy concern in distributed networks; the Platform for Privacy Preferences is one of the popular proposal, though it has many desirable features, it is not easy to enforce it. We argue that this limitation can be managed in federated system such as the Liberty Alliance framework. In the final chapter we make the case for using timestamp based authentication protocol in mobile Web service on the ground of efficiency gain
