    Conducting focus group research in a design science project: Application in developing a process model for the front end of innovation

    Focus groups are a popular qualitative research method often applied to different areas of such as in medical research. The aim of this research paper is to apply and test the focus group procedure by Tremblay et al. in the setting of a current design science study on the Front End of Innovation. The main results of the current paper are an empirical testing of the Tremblay et al. method and proposed modifications of this method based on said testing. These results confirm that focus groups, conducted in compliance with said method, can be of great use in design science projects to support refining and evaluating artifacts. The results obtained in such manner can provide essential contributions to the knowledge base. The findings also indicate that the approach by Tremblay et al. does not address particular research-setting specific factors, such as the right timing when to actually conduct the focus group, the background of an organization, the contextual influences in participant selection process or the definition of an appropriate setting for the focus group study. The current paper addresses the strengths as well as the shortcomings detected in the current setting and proposes modifications to the Tremblay method

    Exploring Design Science Research Project Characteristics - An Initial Empirical Investigation

    Design science research (DSR) has gained increased attention in the past decades. This type of research is commonly organized as research projects that need to be managed thoroughly to achieve the intended outcomes. However, very little empirical data are available that provide insights into the nature of DSR projects. This this study aims to bet-ter understand DSR projects as a foundation for further studies. It provides first empirical data about DSR project characteristics that have been collected in eight semi-structured interviews with experienced scholars. The data show that DSR projects are heterogeneous in terms of size, complexity, duration, budget and research outputs. They have in common that they focus on relevance, the design of artifacts, evaluation and the involvement of industry partners. A comparison with related meta-studies reveals that research methods employed in DSR projects differ significantly from the ones identified in the meta-studies

    A Novel Design Science Approach for Integrating Chinese User-Generated Content in Non-Chinese Market Intelligence

    Market research has long relied on reactive means of data gathering, such as questionnaires or focus groups. With the wide-spread use of social media, millions of comments about customer opinions and feedback regarding products and brands are available. However, before using this ‘wisdom of the crowd’ as a source for marketing research, several challenges have to be tackled: the sheer volume of posts, their unstructured format, and the dozens of different languages used on the internet. All of them make automated usage of this data challenging. In this paper, we draw on dashboard design principles and follow a design science research approach to develop a framework for search, integration, and analysis of cross-language user-generated content. With ‘MarketMiner’, we implement the framework in the automotive industry by analyzing Chinese auto forums. The results are promising in that MarketMiner can dramatically improve utilization of foreign-language social media content for market intelligence purposes

    Collaborative production planning with BIM – Design, development and evaluation of a Virtual Production Planning system

    Construction projects have for a long time been characterized by increased specialization, low productivity, and a fragmented information exchange culture, resulting in inefficient work processes, with time delays and budget overruns. Research within the context of construction planning and scheduling and IT points to improving communication, collaboration, and cooperation to address these problems. However, the focus has been chiefly on production planning processes and scheduling tools and software. Research also points to collaborative user-friendly scheduling systems remaining under-researched; even though collaborative approaches have been introduced, the technological support and implementations are lacking.In this context, this thesis presents a novel collaborative planning and scheduling process and software system, supporting multiple modes of interaction such as individual review, planning, collaborative scheduling and review work in 4D, both co-located and remote. A Design Science Research approach was used to identify requirements that guided the collaborative production planning system\u27s design and development and evaluations. These evaluations show that implementing the collaborative planning and scheduling system enhances understanding of the planning and scheduling of projects and supports both individual and group work. The developed system facilitates information gathering when creating activities and improves collaborative production of the schedule. Furthermore, the new collaborative setting shortens the length of planning workshops while simultaneously increasing the quality output. Thus, the thesis contributes to the body of knowledge of collaborative production planning, collaborative IT systems in construction, how these systems can support communication and collaborative processes in a social context, and how a design science approach could be used in this setting

    This thesis discusses various elements of value co-creation through APIs in the context of Multi-sided platforms. A design science research methodology is applied to answer the main research question of how APIs contribute to value co-creation in a Multi-sided platform environment. During the research, a model is developed that shows the impact of offering APIs to complementors, competitors and individual developers. This model is applied in the context of the E-Mobility industry. The target company, a Multi-sided platform provider that connects EV drivers with charging stations, serves as a real-world context for this thesis. During the application of the model, several artifacts are created, and the theoretical model is refined through direct feedback from business and IT professionals in the E-Mobility field
