Fast scalable visualization techniques for interactive billion-particle walkthrough

    Get PDF
This research develops a comprehensive framework for interactive walkthrough involving one billion particles in an immersive virtual environment to enable interrogative visualization of large atomistic simulation data. As a mixture of scientific and engineering approaches, the framework is based on four key techniques: adaptive data compression based on space-filling curves, octree-based visibility and occlusion culling, predictive caching based on machine learning, and scalable data reduction based on parallel and distributed processing. In terms of parallel rendering, this system combines functional parallelism, data parallelism, and temporal parallelism to improve interactivity. The visualization framework will be applicable not only to material simulation, but also to computational biology, applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, and nanotechnology, etc

Constructing the Phylomemetic Tree: Indonesian Tradition-Inspired Buildings\ud

    Get PDF
The paper discusses the importance of phylomemetic visualization to approach the cultural diversity in the social system like Indonesia, and thus revisit formal methodology regarding to the construction of the phylomemetic tree as an inspiration lent from the phylogenic analysis. A case of study is presented regarding to the data obtained from the diversity of traditionally inspired building-designs in Indonesia. Some future conjectures and open future analytical works in the anthropological studies are drawn

Teaching for wisdom in modern early education

    Get PDF
Teaching for wisdom (especially at the early educational stages) requires personal competence by the teacher, interesting teaching aids and modern, motivating techniques that stimulate and develop the child’s potential abilities and competences related to general and practical intelligence and creativity. In early education, an especially needed type of children’s/students’ activity is that which leads to the direct experiencing of the surrounding cultural, natural, technical and social reality. Such activity is undertaken by individuals through internal emotional involvement, which leads to experiencing values in an in-depth way, supporting development and gaining all kinds of practical experience, which in turn fosters maturity towards wisdom. The environment where Teaching for wisdom should be deliberately organized is school (preschool). Factual knowledge and the methodical competences of teachers can support the organization of educational situations that allow children/students to experience values and wisdom, develop their potential cognitive abilities, gain experience in the interpretation and evaluation of wise/unwise behavior, and develop the habits of wise behavior. These situations should be a source of getting students ready to use wisdom in life and to shape their value systems. The proposal of a detailed competence scope for the notion of wisdom is presented in the this article

A Comparative Study on Intonation Difference Between Chinese EFL Speakers and Native English Speakers Based on Visual Phonetic Software Praat

    Get PDF
Acoustic features such as intonation are attached great importance by all English learners around the world, so as the Chinese EFL speakers. The study mainly conducts a comparative study between Chinese advanced EFL speakers and native speakers, analyzing the differences in intonation and the reasons behind it. Phonetic software Praat was used to visualized these voice data after the experiment. The result shows that all these Chinese advanced EFL speakers possess the awareness of intonation variation, but the detailed intonation variation is still quite different from the native speakers. The reason for this phenomenon is that most Chinese advanced EFL speakers fail to understand the extra-linguistic information conveyed from intonation variation. Acquiring phonetic theory and correcting intonation under the assistance of visual phonetic software are two practical methods to solve this problem

Praesentia Sublimis: Studies in the Differend

Interrogating the notion of the differend, taken from Jean-Franҫois Lyotard’s book of the same name, in which a wrong occurs along with the impossibility of its representation as a wrong, this thesis attempts to rearticulate the relationship between the distant and heterogeneous theories dealing with a supposedly common subject matter: namely, the sublime. The sublime as it is taken up in the rhetorical pedagogy of Longinus, the transcendental aesthetic of Immanuel Kant, and the postmodern theory of Jean-Franҫois Lyotard refuses to yield a shared dimension that could bind together these major moments of thought. There are sublimes, it seems, rather than a single sublime. Against this, I contend that the thought of these three figures all constitute a site for a differend involving that which is both singular and irreducible in its happening here and now and therefore always escapes representation: the event of presentation as such
