    Image and interpretation using artificial intelligence to read ancient Roman texts

    The ink and stylus tablets discovered at the Roman Fort of Vindolanda are a unique resource for scholars of ancient history. However, the stylus tablets have proved particularly difficult to read. This paper describes a system that assists expert papyrologists in the interpretation of the Vindolanda writing tablets. A model-based approach is taken that relies on models of the written form of characters, and statistical modelling of language, to produce plausible interpretations of the documents. Fusion of the contributions from the language, character, and image feature models is achieved by utilizing the GRAVA agent architecture that uses Minimum Description Length as the basis for information fusion across semantic levels. A system is developed that reads in image data and outputs plausible interpretations of the Vindolanda tablets

    Routine Screening for Silent Atrial Fibrillation

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and is particularly prevalent in the elderly population. It is associated with an elevated stroke risk which can be easily minimized with anticoagulation. However, AF detection is often difficult due to infrequent or absent symptoms and the first presentation of AF may be a stroke. Advances in technology have made screening for AF more feasible and accessible. Opportunistic screening with pulse palpation and confirmatory ECG is now strongly supported by the evidence and more recent studies have demonstrated that systematic screening – particularly of those with AF risk factors – may be cost effective. A systematic review was conducted of the literature pertaining to AF screening guidelines and AF detection methods, including pulse palpation, 12-lead ECG, Holter monitors, wearable loop recorders, patch monitors (e.g. Zio patch), ambulatory telemetry, implantable cardiac monitors, single-lead mobile ECG devices, advanced blood pressure monitors, and smartphone photoplethysmography. The best options for screening were discussed and a screening program was proposed. Additional goals and concerns relevant to the future of AF screening were noted

    METRICS AND NEATENING OF HANDWRITTEN CHARACTERS

    At the present time, with the technology that many portable devices have, pen-based input is widely supported and input can be done through handwriting rather than just by typing. While character recognition and other input issues are the main consideration with these devices, there are many interesting output issues related to digital ink. This thesis investigates the questions of handwriting neatening and personal handwriting fonts. We use the notion of “character metrics”, .which refer to the location and size of various features, such as ascender height and character width. Recording these features for handwritten characters allows for input and output transformations and may help with recognition in a 2-dimensional setting such as for mathematical handwriting recognition. To be able to create personalized handwriting fonts, we have constructed a tool to collect samples where lines related to the characters metrics can be recorded. Handwriting always comes with variations in alignment and size so certain measurements based on these metrics can be extracted to perform the desired transformations to obtain a set of samples in a normalized form
