    A Survey of "The Sala degli Stucchi, an ornate baroque hall"

    The "Sala degli stucchi" is a heavely decorated baroque hall, as the Italian name itself suggests, in the Royal Palace in Turin. The present work describes a survey of this historic object. This work is a part of a wider project on the study of Architectural Patrimony carried out for the La Soprintendenza per il Patrimonio storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico per il Piemonte. It is a chance to test the modern survey techniques of photogrammetry and LIDAR. This article focuses on the integrated use of digital photogrammetry and LIDAR in a demanding environment, in order to take best advantages of both techniques. Different survey products were obtained, ranging from 3D and photogrammetric models to orthophotos. The adopted techniques, the problems and difficulties that arose during the survey process are shown in the paper.     AS-BUILT RELIABILITY IN ARCHITECTURAL HBIM MODELING

    Abstract. The As-Built Model cannot be considered as a simple three-dimensional mould of the studied reality but as a process of analysis, synthesis and communication of architectural complexity including, in addition to geometric-dimensional aspects, also the historical, aesthetic and architectural features of the building. Consequently, the transparency and reliability issues of the digital visualization constitutes, as well as for the field of archaeology, a matter of primary importance in the modelling of cultural heritage. The increasing interest of scholars in the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to historical buildings has renewed the problems related to the reliability of the As-built, related not only to the relationship between the model and the measure, but also to the other information, for example the constructive technologies. Based on the survey and modelling of some case studies, the paper's aim is to define a reference standard for the reliability declaration of the As-Built HBIM models, which considers both the geometric and information aspects.</p

    It's well known that more and more accurate methodologies and automatic tools are now available in the field of geometric survey and image processing and they constitute a fundamental instrument for cultural heritage knowledge and preservation; on the other side, very smart and precise numerical models are continuously improved and used in order to simulate the mechanical behaviour of masonry structures: both instruments and technologies are important part of a global process of knowledge which is at the base of any conservation project of cultural heritage. Despite the high accuracy and automation level reached by both technologies and programs, the transfer of data between them is not an easy task and defining the most reliable way to translate and exchange information without data loosing is still an open issue. The goal of the present paper is to analyse the complex process of translation from the very precise (and sometimes redundant) information obtainable by the modern survey methodologies for historic buildings (as laser scanner), into the very simplified (may be too much) schemes used to understand their real structural behaviour, with the final aim to contribute to the discussion on reliable methods for cultural heritage knowledge improvement, through empiricism

    Baroque Banded Vaults: Surveying and Modeling. The Case Study of a Noble Palace in Turin

    This paper presents the methodological framework set up for the analysis, interpretation, and representation of the banded vaulted systems recognized in eleven Baroque atria in Turin. In these atria, the banded vaults, locally named “a fascie”, are featured by a series of arches orthogonal to the perimeter walls on which they rest. The arches divide the room’s ceiling into spaces that can accommodate small vaults of different shapes. The atria have been the subject of bibliographical, historical and documentary analyses, laser scanner metric survey, two-dimensional graphic representations, and interpretative hypotheses through three-dimensional modeling of the design’s geometries of the vaults. The integration between terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technique, architectural drawing and three-dimensional modeling methods led to the definition of new workflows, aimed at optimizing the use of data. From these procedures new opportunities for the research arise, such as the comparison (metric and geometric) through the superimposition of design ideal models and point clouds

    Digital strategies for the valorisation of archival heritage

    20th century pre-digital architectural archives are a current topic of interest for scholars involved in historical studies as well as those studying conservation, valorisation and communication. These vast archival heritages could be enhanced by the methodologies, techniques and tools offered by the digital revolution. The present proposal demonstrates this potential through the application of structure from motion techniques to a physical scale model that represents the Turin Horse Racing designed by Carlo Mollino. Moreover, the paper presents a comparison of different software, methodologies and modelling tools and suggests a design for virtual and on-site communication strategies. These strategies fuel new interrelations of knowledge and ideas, through which an archive can become a place of convergence between the real and the virtual

    PARTICIPATORY APPROACH FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF ARCHITECTURALARCHIVES FUNDS: THE EXPERIENCE AT MUSEO DELLA RAPPRESENTAZIONE IN CATANIA

    Abstract. This paper describes the results of a participatory approach experienced during the training of university and high school students at the MuRa (Museo della Rappresentazione). Mura is a university museum belonging to the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture at University of Catania. It houses and exhibits the collections of architectural projects of Francesco Fichera and a series of chalcographies including the collection of the renown engraver Giovan Battista Piranesi. The training program has been addressed at the documentation, visualization and communication of the architectures realized by Francesco Fichera and other Sicilian architects in the city centre of Catania in the first half of XXth century, whose projects are hosted by the museum. The methodology adopted has included the experimentation of participatory strategies aimed at the communication and the narration of the architectures built in the early twentieth century in Catania. After a preliminary training phase on digital tools for 3D documentation and enhancement of architectural heritage, the students were invited to participate with their ideas and creative expressions in the dissemination actions of the identified case studies

    Semantic-based modelling and representation of patrimony buildings

    This article presents a methodological approach for the semantic description of patrimony buildings based both on theoretical reflections and on research experiences. To develop this approach, a first process of extraction and formalisation of architectural knowledge based on the analysis of architectural treaties is proposed. Then, the identified features are used to produce a template shape library dedicated to the buildings surveying. Finally, the problem of the overall model structuration and organization using semantic information is addressed for user handling purposes

    A FRAMEWORK FOR ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE HBIM SEMANTIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT

    Despite the recognized advantages of the use of BIM in the field of architecture and engineering, the extension of this procedure to the architectural heritage is neither immediate nor critical. The uniqueness and irregularity of historical architecture, on the one hand, and the great quantity of information necessary for the knowledge of architectural heritage, on the other, require appropriate reflections. The aim of this paper is to define a general framework for the use of BIM procedures for architectural heritage. The proposed methodology consists of three different Level of Development (LoD), depending on the characteristics of the building and the objectives of the study: a simplified model with a low geometric accuracy and a minimum quantity of information (LoD 200); a model nearer to the reality but, however, with a high deviation between virtual and real model (LoD 300); a detailed BIM model that reproduce as much as possible the geometric irregularities of the building and is enriched by the maximum quantity of information available (LoD 400)
