    The evolving landscape of learning technology

    This paper provides an overview of the current and emerging issues in learning technology research, concentrating on structural issues such as infrastructure, policy and organizational context. It updates the vision of technology outlined by Squires’ (1999) concept of peripatetic electronic teachers (PETs) where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide an enabling medium to allow teachers to act as freelance agents in a virtual world and reflects to what extent this vision has been realized The paper begins with a survey of some of the key areas of ICT development and provides a contextualizing framework for the area in terms of external agendas and policy drivers. It then focuses upon learning technology developments which have occurred in the last five years in the UK and offers a number of alternative taxonomies to describe this. The paper concludes with a discussion of the issues which arise from this work

    We present an overview of the current state of public semantic chemistry and propose new approaches at a strategic and a detailed level. We show by example how a model for a Chemical Semantic Web can be constructed using machine-processed data and information from journal articles.This manuscript addresses questions of robotic access to data and its automatic re-use, including the role of Open Access archival of data. This is a pre-refereed preprint allowed by the publisher's (Royal Soc. Chemistry) Green policy. The author's preferred manuscript is an HTML hyperdocument with ca. 20 links to images, some of which are JPEgs and some of which are SVG (scalable vector graphics) including animations. There are also links to molecules in CML, for which the Jmol viewer is recommended.     This paper analyzes the changes that new technologies and mainly Internet are having over chemical information sources. To do so, it classifies the most common ones into different chapters, the first being Chemical Abstract Service. The following evaluates the changes produced on journals and encyclopedias. Newer tools such as databases and their adaptation to Internet, together with those more recent ones to be worked with, search engines and gateways, are discussed in later chapters. Fi124 nally, after mentioning how university libraries are also updating their resources, the author discusses the evolution of these tendencies

The Heldrich Center identified five specific areas likely to generate new skill demands: biotechnology, security, e-learning, e-commerce, and food/agribusiness. This report explores the study's findings and offers recommendations for improving education and training in New Jersey

    A collaborative e-Science architecture towards a virtual research environment

    This paper presents a novel Collaborative e-Science Architecture (CeSA) to address two challenging issues in e-Science that have arisen from the management of heterogeneous distributed environments. By combining the capabilities of peer-to-peer and Grid computing, the architecture provides an environment for scientific collaborations within distributed, loosely coupled research communities and brings computation and data intensive resources to the desktops of the scientists in these communities. The Reaction Kinetics research community had been used as a case study to capture realistic requirements. A prototype based on the architecture was developed for user experiment and evaluation. The results of these experiments were promising. It has provided further motivation to evolve CeSA towards a Virtual Research Environment
