Internet of Things-Based Smart Classroom Environment
Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm that is gaining ground in the Computer Science field. There’s no doubt that IoT will make our lives easier with the advent of smart thermostats, medical wearable devices, connected vending machines and others. One important research direction in IoT is Resource Management Systems (RMS). In the current state of RMS research, very few studies were able to take advantage of indoor localization which can be very valuable, especially in the context of smart classrooms. For example, indoor localization can be used to dynamically generate seat map of students in a classroom. Indoor localization is not the only concept which was not thoroughly researched in RMS. Another valuable proposition is to treat physical chairs as “smart” devices, which can report their occupancy, user information, and duration of presence to a cloud data store. Interconnected smart chairs consisting of pressure sensors, RFID readers, wireless communication capabilities, indoor localization and useful mobile application can serve as a powerful tool for instructors and other stakeholders. In this thesis we propose a complete smart classroom system consisting of smart chairs, anchor nodes, cloud storage and Android application. Implementation of indoor localization is a challenging and intricate task. Furthermore, since GPS chips cannot be used indoors, different and more challenging techniques have to be used. We developed a special protocol to handle communication and data flow of localization between smart chairs and the master node. Finally, the system was evaluated and special algorithm was developed to improve the accuracy of indoor localization in the context of smart classroom
Enhancing Security and Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Network Routing with IOT Challenges: A Thorough Review
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as a crucial component in the field of networking due to their cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and compact size, making them invaluable for various applications. However, as the reliance on WSN-dependent applications continues to grow, these networks grapple with inherent limitations such as memory and computational constraints. Therefore, effective solutions require immediate attention, especially in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT), which largely relies on the effectiveness of WSNs. This study undertakes a comprehensive review of research conducted between 2018 and 2020, categorizing it into six main domains: 1) Providing an overview of WSN applications, management, and security considerations. 2) Focusing on routing and energy-saving techniques. 3) Reviewing the development of methods for information gathering, emphasizing data integrity and privacy. 4) Emphasizing connectivity and positioning techniques. 5) Examining studies that explore the integration of IoT technology into WSNs with an eye on secure data transmission. 6) Highlighting research efforts aimed at energy efficiency. The study addresses the motivation behind employing WSN applications in IoT technologies, as well as the challenges, obstructions, and solutions related to their application and development. It underscores that energy consumption remains a paramount issue in WSNs, with untapped potential for improving energy efficiency while ensuring robust security. Furthermore, it identifies existing approaches' weaknesses, rendering them inadequate for achieving energy-efficient routing in secure WSNs. This review sheds light on the critical challenges and opportunities in the field, contributing to a deeper understanding of WSNs and their role in secure IoT applications
An RFID-enabled framework to support Ambient Home Care Services
The growing number of elderly in modern societies is encouraging advances in remote assistive solutions to enable sustainable and safe ‘ageing in place’. Among the many technologies which may serve to support Ambient Home Care Systems, RFID is offering a set of differential features which make it suitable to build new interaction schemes while supporting horizontal system’s features such as localization. This paper details the design of a passive RFID-based AHCS, composed by an infrastructure of mobile and static tags and readers controlled by a SOA (service oriented architecture) middleware. The technology possibilities, its drawbacks and integration problems in this application domain are described from a practical approach
Leading Undergraduate Students to Big Data Generation
People are facing a flood of data today. Data are being collected at
unprecedented scale in many areas, such as networking, image processing,
virtualization, scientific computation, and algorithms. The huge data nowadays
are called Big Data. Big data is an all encompassing term for any collection of
data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process them using
traditional data processing applications. In this article, the authors present
a unique way which uses network simulator and tools of image processing to
train students abilities to learn, analyze, manipulate, and apply Big Data.
Thus they develop students handson abilities on Big Data and their critical
thinking abilities. The authors used novel image based rendering algorithm with
user intervention to generate realistic 3D virtual world. The learning outcomes
are significant
