EDI - XML Standards and Technologies in the Agri-Food Industry
Due to globalisation, the new technological developments and the complexity of food
supply processes, the European food sector is increasingly becoming more complex. The consumersâ
trust in food, triggered and affected by a number of food crises, is low. Today, consumers increasingly
expect safe and high quality food and demand information about the origin of their food. Also, the
economic health of the food industry can be greatly affected by food crises; therefore, efficient and
effective mechanisms are required to assist the food industry in tracking and tracing products along the
food chain. In this paper, we discuss the criteria for an efficient and effective traceability system from
an IT perspective (mainly data exchange) and we identify key requirements for ICT enabled
traceability
webXice: an Infrastructure for Information Commerce on the WWW
Systems for information commerce on the WWW have to support flexible business models if they should be able to cover a wide range of requirements imposed by the different types of information businesses. This leads to non-trivial functional and security requirements both on the provider and consumer side, for which we introduce an architecture and a system implementation, webXice. We focus on the question, how participants with minimal technological requisites, i.e. solely standard Web browsers available, can be technologically enabled to articipate in the information commerce at a system level, while not sacrificing the functionality and security required by an autonomous participant in an information commerce scenario. In particular, we propose an implementation strategy to efficiently support persistent message logging for light-weight clients, that enables clients to collect and manage non-reputiable messages as proofs. We believe that the capability to support minimal system platforms is a necessary precondition for the wide-spread use of any information commerce infrastructure
On Money as a Means of Coordination between Network Packets
In this work, we apply a common economic tool, namely money, to coordinate
network packets. In particular, we present a network economy, called
PacketEconomy, where each flow is modeled as a population of rational network
packets, and these packets can self-regulate their access to network resources
by mutually trading their positions in router queues. Every packet of the
economy has its price, and this price determines if and when the packet will
agree to buy or sell a better position. We consider a corresponding Markov
model of trade and show that there are Nash equilibria (NE) where queue
positions and money are exchanged directly between the network packets. This
simple approach, interestingly, delivers improvements even when fiat money is
used. We present theoretical arguments and experimental results to support our
claims
