It addresses research data resulting from research carried out in Brazilian teaching and research institutions and the need to make it public, through open access in repositories, in order to validate the results obtained and published, as well as to foster new research and socialize the knowledge. It aims to explore the national and international scenario and present the planning of an investigation that seeks a technological solution to effect open access to research data (AADP) from a national perspective. It proposes a methodology divided into five stages: identification of AADP practices in Brazilian institutions; mapping of AADP users and their needs; proposal of a web portal to bring together the national community in AADP; survey of services and technological solutions for the sharing of research data on the international scene; proposing recommendations to support the creation of repositories of research data in national institutions and their aggregation into a research network in AADP. As a result, it brings international initiatives and strategies to undertake the creation of research data repositories, as well as to create communities of practice around the subject. It recommends that the proposal be made up of three strands, in order to support the creation of research data repositories in national institutions and their aggregation into a research network in AADP

One of the transformations on the production, archiving, access and information retrieval of scientific communication has been the appearance of open access digital journals and repositories. Universities and research centers are creating scientific literature eprint servers, which include electronic versions of scientific documents published or unpublished, deposited by authors and editors from all scientific areas. These information technologies allow publishing commentaries, notes and new versions of research data that have been published in traditional formats or it is expected to be published in the future. The Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology Information (IBICT), within its mission of promoting the improvement of science, technology and innovation in Brazil, has been working in the development of tools that may help in disseminating the scientific production in the fields of Library and Information Science. Considering this context, the Institute has had several iniciatives with the purposes of creating digital repositories and promoting open access to digital contents, following international standards and participating in corporate initiatives. This essay puts in perspective the transformations of scientific communications within the Information Science in Brazil, particularly those related to open access digital journals and repositories. Also, the impact of Eprints to Library and Information Science server (E-LIS) in the brazilian community of scientific information is presented as an strategy in integrating locally generated knowledge to the global content disseminated by E-LIS

A scientific methodology for researching CALL interaction data: Multimodal LEarning and TEaching Corpora

    Get PDF
International audienceThis chapter gives an overview of one possible staged methodology for structuring LCI data by presenting a new scientific object, LEarning and TEaching Corpora (LETEC). Firstly, the chapter clarifies the notion of corpora, used in so many different ways in language studies, and underlines how corpora differ from raw language data. Secondly, using examples taken from actual online learning situations, the chapter illustrates the methodology that is used to collect, transform and organize data from online learning situations in order to make them sharable through open-access repositories. The ethics and rights for releasing a corpus as OpenData are discussed. Thirdly, the authors suggest how the transcription of interactions may become more systematic, and what benefits may be expected from analysis tools, before opening the CALL research perspective applied to LCI towards its applications to teacher-training in Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), and the common interests the CALL field shares with researchers in the field of Corpus Linguistics working on CMC

Reinforcing Students’ Research Abilities via Digital Repositories

Computer science graduates are requested to possess complex professional abilities including research skills. In this paper we justify the development of a departmental repository to assist all non-auditorium activities and summarize its benefits. We are convinced that this is the way students and teachers to form interim learning societies

Works for designing and deploying a university department repository are presented. General considerations about policies and functional requirements are outlined with respect to the institution context. Technical and system issues are briefly discussed. Finally the benefits and usability of the repository are summarized

This paper describes activities which have taken place within the UK institutional repository (IR) sector focusing on developing a community of practice through the sharing of experiences and best practice. This includes work done by the UK Council of Research Repositories (UKCoRR) and other bodies, together with informal activities, such as sharing the experience of organising Open Access Week events. The paper also considers future work to be undertaken by UKCoRR to continue developing the community

Embracing the future: embedding digital repositories in the University of London

Digital repositories can help Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop coherent and coordinated approaches to capture, identify, store and retrieve intellectual assets such as datasets, course material and research papers. With the advances of technology, an increasing number of Higher Education Institutions are implementing digital repositories. The leadership of these institutions, however, has been concerned about the awareness of and commitment to repositories, and their sustainability in the future. This study informs a consortium of thirteen London institutions with an assessment of current awareness and attitudes of stakeholders regarding digital repositories in three case study institutions. The report identifies drivers for, and barriers to, the embedding of digital repositories in institutional strategy. The findings therefore should be of use to decision-makers involved in the development of digital repositories. Our approach was entirely based on consultations with specific groups of stakeholders in three institutions through interviews with specific individuals. The research in this report was prepared for the SHERPA-LEAP Consortium and conducted by RAND Europe
