    Overview of free-piston Stirling SP-100 activities at the NASA Lewis Research Center

    An overview of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lewis Research Center (LeRC) SP-100 free-piston Stirling engine activities is presented. These activities are being conducted in support of the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), and NASA. The space-power technology effort, under SP-100, addresses the status of the 25 kWe Space Power Demonstrator Engine (SPDE). Another facet of the SP-100 project covers the status of an endurance test. Dynamic balancing of the SPDE engine is discussed along with a summary covering the parametric results of a study showing the relationship between power-converter specific weight and efficiency both as a function of Stirling engine heater to cooler temperature ratio. Design parameters and conceptual design features are presented for a 25 kWe, single-cylinder free-piston Stirling space-power converter. And finally, a description of a hydrodynamic gas bearing concept is presented

    A Spectral-Scanning Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Integrated System

    An integrated spectral-scanning magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique is implemented in a 0.12μm SiGe BiCMOS process. This system is designed for small-scale MRI applications with non-uniform and low magnetic fields. The system is capable of generating customized magnetic resonance (MR) excitation signals, and also recovering the MR response using a coherent direct conversion receiver. The operation frequency is tunable from DC to 37MHz for wide-band MRI and up to 250MHz for narrow-band MR spectroscopy

    Body MRI artifacts in clinical practice: a physicist\u27s and radiologist\u27s perspective.

    The high information content of MRI exams brings with it unintended effects, which we call artifacts. The purpose of this review is to promote understanding of these artifacts, so they can be prevented or properly interpreted to optimize diagnostic effectiveness. We begin by addressing static magnetic field uniformity, which is essential for many techniques, such as fat saturation. Eddy currents, resulting from imperfect gradient pulses, are especially problematic for new techniques that depend on high performance gradient switching. Nonuniformity of the transmit radiofrequency system constitutes another source of artifacts, which are increasingly important as magnetic field strength increases. Defects in the receive portion of the radiofrequency system have become a more complex source of problems as the number of radiofrequency coils, and the sophistication of the analysis of their received signals, has increased. Unwanted signals and noise spikes have many causes, often manifesting as zipper or banding artifacts. These image alterations become particularly severe and complex when they are combined with aliasing effects. Aliasing is one of several phenomena addressed in our final section, on artifacts that derive from encoding the MR signals to produce images, also including those related to parallel imaging, chemical shift, motion, and image subtraction

    High-efficiency 20 GHz traveling wave tube development for space communications

    A 75 watt CW high efficiency helix TWT operating at 20 GHz was developed for satellite communication systems. The purpose was to extend the performance capabilities of helix TWTs by using recent technology developments. The TWT described is a unique design because high overall efficiency is obtained with a low perveance beam. In the past, low perveance designs resulted in low beam efficiencies. However, due to recent breakthoughs in diamond rod technology and in collector electrode materials, high efficiencies can now be achieved with low perveance beams. The advantage of a low perveance beam is a reduction in space charge within the beam which translates to more efficient collector operation. In addition, this design incorporates textured graphite electrodes which further enhance collector operation by suppressing backstreaming secondaries. The diamond supported helix circuit features low RF losses, high interaction impedance, good thermal handling capability and has been designed to compensate for the low perveance beam. One more discussed tube feature is the use of a velocity taper in the output helix that achieves low signal distortion while maintaining high efficiency

    Load-adaptive zero-phase-shift direct repetitive control for stand-alone four-leg VSI

    This paper deals with a dedicated load adaptive phase compensation algorithm to be used in Repetitive Control based stand-alone 4-leg VSI. The plant model is achieved, its inherent modifications according to the operating point are highlighted and used to properly adapt the Repetitive Control structure. Modification of the repetitive control parameters is described to obtain the desired phase compensation capabilities achieving a Zero-Phase-Shift condition at each harmonic. This allows to increase the gain of the Repetitive Controller at high order harmonics thus yielding a better VSI output voltages with strongly reduced THD and faster dynamic response. As a consequence, the VSI output voltages are almost independent from the loads to be fed and the 4-leg VSI with the proposed Zero-Phase-Shift Direct Repetitive Control is an ideal candidate to supply sensitive loads in microgrid, in particular for stand-alone applications

    The space shuttle orbiter atmospheric revitalization subsystem provides thermal and contaminant control as well as total- and oxygen partial-pressure control of the environment within the orbiter crew cabin. Challenges that occurred during the development of this subsystem for the space shuttle orbiter are described. The design of the rotating hardware elements of the system (pumps, fans, etc.) required significant development to meet the requirements of long service life, maintainability, and high cycle-fatigue life. As a result, a stringent development program, particularly in the areas of bearing life and heat dissipation, was required.
