    Fault detection and location in DC systems from initial di/dt measurement

    The use of DC for primary power distribution has the potential to bring significant design, cost and efficiency benefits to a range of power transmission and distribution applications. The use of active converter technologies within these networks is a key enabler for these benefits to be realised, however their integration can lead to exceptionally demanding electrical fault protection requirements, both in terms of speed and fault discrimination. This paper describes a novel fault detection method which exceeds the capability of many current protection methods in order to meet these requirements. The method utilises fundamental characteristics of the converter filter capacitance’s response to electrical system faults to estimate fault location through a measurement of fault path inductance. Crucially, the method has the capability to detect and discriminate fault location within microseconds of the fault occurring, facilitating its rapid removal from the network

    This paper presents an innovative application of IEEE 1149.4 and the integrated diagnostic reconfiguration (IDR) as tools for the implementation of an embedded test solution for an automotive electronic control unit, implemented as a fully integrated mixed signal system. The paper describes how the test architecture can be used for fault avoidance with results from a hardware prototype presented. The paper concludes that fault avoidance can be integrated into mixed signal electronic systems to handle key failure modes

    This white book provides an insight into the issues surrounding the impact of increasing levels of DER on the generator and network protection and the resulting necessary improvements in protection testing practices. Particular focus is placed on ever increasing inverter-interfaced DER installations and the challenges of utility network integration. This white book should also serve as a starting point for specifying DER protection testing requirements and procedures. A comprehensive review of international DER protection practices, standards and recommendations is presented. This is accompanied by the identifi cation of the main performance challenges related to these protection schemes under varied network operational conditions and the nature of DER generator and interface technologies. Emphasis is placed on the importance of dynamic testing that can only be delivered through laboratory-based platforms such as real-time simulators, integrated substation automation infrastructure and fl exible, inverter-equipped testing microgrids. To this end, the combination of fl exible network operation and new DER technologies underlines the importance of utilising the laboratory testing facilities available within the DERlab Network of Excellence. This not only informs the shaping of new protection testing and network integration practices by end users but also enables the process of de-risking new DER protection technologies. In order to support the issues discussed in the white paper, a comparative case study between UK and German DER protection and scheme testing practices is presented. This also highlights the level of complexity associated with standardisation and approval mechanisms adopted by different countries

    A COMPARISON BETWEEN DATA-DRIVEN AND PHYSICS OF FAILURE PHM APPROACHES FOR SOLDER JOINT FATIGUE

    Prognostics and systems health management technology is an enabling discipline of technologies and methods with the potential of solving reliability problems that have been manifested due to complexities in design, manufacturing, environmental and operational use conditions, and maintenance. Over the past decade, research has been conducted in PHM to provide benefits such as advance warning of failures, enable forecasted maintenance, improve system qualification, extend system life, and diagnose intermittent failures that can lead to field failure returns exhibiting no-fault-found symptoms. While there are various methods to perform prognostics, including model-based and data-driven methods, these methods have some key disadvantages. This thesis presents a fusion prognostics approach, which combines or ―fuses together‖ the model based and data-driven approaches, to enable increasingly better estimates of remaining useful life. A case study using an electronics system to illustrate a step by step implementation of the fusion approach is also presented. The various benefits of the fusion approach and suggestions for future work are included

    This is the second half of a two paper series covering aspects of the no fault found (NFF) phenomenon, which is highly challenging and is becoming even more important due to increasing complexity and criticality of technical systems. Part 1 introduced the fundamental concept of unknown failures from an organizational, behavioral and cultural stand point. It also reported an industrial outlook to the problem, recent procedural standards, whilst discussing the financial implications and safety concerns. In this issue, the authors examine the technical aspects, reviewing the common causes of NFF failures in electronic, software and mechanical systems. This is followed by a survey on technological techniques actively being used to reduce the consequence of such instances. After discussing improvements in testability, the article identifies gaps in literature and points out the core areas that should be focused in the future. Special attention is paid to the recent trends on knowledge sharing and troubleshooting tools; with potential research on technical diagnosis being enumerated

    Literature survey and correspondence with industrial sector shows that No-Fault-Found (NFF) is a major concern in through life engineering services, especially for defence, aerospace, and other transport industry. There are various occurrences and root causes that result in NFF events but intermittent interconnections are the most frustrating. This is because it disappears while testing, and missed out by diagnostic equipment. This thesis describes the challenging and most important area of intermittent fault detection and health monitoring that focuses towards NFF situation in electronics interconnections. After introduction, this thesis starts with literature survey and describes financial impact on aerospace and other transport industry. It highlights NFF technologies and discuss different facts and their impact on NFF. Then It goes into experimental study that how repeatedly intermittent fault could be replicated. It describes a novel fault replicator that can generate repeatedly IFs for further experimental study on diagnosis techniques/algorithms. The novel IF replicator provide for single and multipoint intermittent connection. The experimental work focuses on mechanically induced intermittent conditions in connectors.
