    Measurements and Analysis of Secondary User Device Effects on Digital Television Receivers

    This is the published version. Copyright © 2009 Newman et al.This article presents results from a study of the potential effects of secondary users operating in unoccupied television spectrum. Television spectrum is known within the wireless communications community as being underutilized, making it a prime candidate for dynamic spectrum access. The proposed use of this open spectrum has prompted questions concerning the quantity of available channel space that could be used without negative impact on consumers who view digital television broadcasts and the viability of secondary use of open channels immediately adjacent to a digital television broadcast channel. In this work, we investigate secondary device operation in the channels directly adjacent to a desired television channel, and the effects upon a selection of consumer digital television (DTV) receivers. Our observations strongly suggest that secondary users could operate "White Space Devices" (WSDs) in unoccupied channel bandwidth directly adjacent to a desired digital television (DTV) channel, with no observable adverse impact upon the reception of the desired channel content

    Replacing the automatic gain control loop in a mobile, digital TV broadcast receiver by a software based solution

    The power level (the amplitude) of an electro-magnetic signal wave suffers from attenuation the greater the distance between the transmitter and the receiver is. The receiver of that signal therefore has components which try to amplify the signal so that it can be processed optimally by a processor. In a mobile or portable environment the signal power level can vary strongly, because the position of the receiver to the transmitter is not fixed. In order to compensate that movement a control loop exists, which dynamically is adapting the front-end to the right level. This work describes a new, software-based way to handle the signal level control loop (formerly automatic gain control) in a digital TV receiver. Starting with a very basic introduction into digital communications, including the description of the traditional front-end architecture, followed by a detailed description of the new method. Finally some conclusions of this new method are made which are giving an idea about how in the future it might be possible to reach better receiving performances using this mechanism

    Single- and dual-carrier microwave noise abatement in the deep space network

    The NASA/JPL Deep Space Network (DSN) microwave ground antenna systems are presented which simultaneously uplink very high power S-band signals while receiving very low level S- and X-band downlinks. Tertiary mechanisms associated with elements give rise to self-interference in the forms of broadband noise burst and coherent intermodulation products. A long-term program to reduce or eliminate both forms of interference is described in detail. Two DSN antennas were subjected to extensive interference testing and practical cleanup program; the initial performance, modification details, and final performance achieved at several planned stages are discussed. Test equipment and field procedures found useful in locating interference sources are discussed. Practices deemed necessary for interference-free operations in the DSN are described. Much of the specific information given is expected to be easily generalized for application in a variety of similar installations. Recommendations for future investigations and individual element design are given

    The Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen of the EC Joint Research Centre (IPSC-JRC) has been mandated to perform a study on the Radio Frequency (RF) threat against telecommunications and ICT control systems. This study is divided into two parts. The rst part concerns the assessment of high energy radio frequency (HERF) threats, where the focus is on the generation of electromagnetic pulses (EMP), the development of corresponding devices and the possible impact on ICT and power distribution systems. The second part of the study concerns radio frequency interference (RFI) with regard to global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). This document contributes to the second part and contains a detailed literature study disclosing the weaknesses of GNSS systems. It is capable of accepting 12 contiguous color television equivalent bandwidth channels in the 11.72 to 12.2 GHz band. Each channel is 40 MHz wide and incorporates a 4 MHz guard band. The modulation format is wideband FM and the channels are frequency division multiplexed. Twelve independent CATV compatible baseband outputs are provided. The overall system specifications are first discussed, then consideration is given to the receiver subsystems and the signal branching network

    In order to evaluate the technical and operational problem areas and provide a recommendation, the enhancements to the Tracking and Data Delay Satellite System (TDRSS) and Shuttle must be evaluated through simulation and analysis. These enhancement techniques must first be characterized, then modeled mathematically, and finally updated into LinCsim (analytical simulation package). The LinCsim package can then be used as an evaluation tool. Three areas of potential enhancements were identified: shuttle payload accommodations, TDRSS SSA and KSA services, and shuttle tracking system and navigation sensors.
