Energy harvesting (EH) technology has become increasingly attractive as an appealing solution to provide long-lasting power for energy-constrained wireless cooperative sensor networks. EH in such networks is particularly important as it can enable information relaying. Different from absorbing energy from intermittent and unpredictable nature, such as solar, wind, and vibration, harvesting from radio frequency (RF) radiated by ambient transmitters has received tremendous attention. The RF signal can convey both information and energy at the same time, which facilitates the development of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. Besides, ambient RF is widely available from the base station, WIFI, and mobile phone in the current information era. However, some open issues associated with EH are existing in the state-of-art. One of the key challenges is rapid energy loss during the transferring process, especially for long-distance transmission. The other challenge is the design of protocols to optimally coordinate between information and power transmission. Meanwhile, in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communication have gained considerable attraction by researchers, which has the ability to improve system spectral efficiency. IBFD can receive information and forward information at the same time on the same frequency. Since the RF signal can be superimposed, the antenna of the IBFD system receives the RF signal from both desired transmitter and local transmitter. Due to the short distance of the local transmission signals, the received signal power is much larger than the desired transmission signals, which results in faulty receiving of the desired signals. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the local self-interference cancellation method of the IBFD system. In the recent state-of-art, three main types of self-interference cancellations are researched, which are passive cancellations, digital cancellations, and analog cancellations. In this thesis, we study polarization-enabled digital self-interference cancellation (PDC) scheme in IBFD EH systems which cancels self-interference by antenna polarization (propagation domain) and digital processing (digital domain). The theme of this thesis is to address the following two questions: how the selfinterference would be canceled in the IBFD EH system and how to optimize key performances of the system to optimal system performances. This thesis makes five research contributions in the important area of IBFD relaying systems with wireless power transfer. Their applications are primarily in the domains of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. The overarching objective of the thesis is to construct analytical system models and evaluate system performance (outage probability, throughput, error) in various scenarios. In all five contributions, system models and analytical expressions of the performance metrics are derived, followed by computer simulations for performance analysis

Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging technological paradigm connecting numerous smart objects for advanced applications ranging from home automation to industrial control to healthcare. The rapid development of wireless technologies and miniature embedded devices has enabled IoT systems for such applications, which have been deployed in a variety of environments. One of the factors limiting the performance of IoT devices is the multipath fading caused by reflectors and attenuators present in the environment where these devices are deployed. Leveraging polarization diversity is a well-known technique to mitigate the deep signal fades and depolarization effects caused by multipath. However, neither experimental validation of the performance of polarization diversity antenna with more than two branches nor the potency of existing antenna selection techniques on such antennas in practical scenarios has received much attention. The objectives of this dissertation are threefold. First, to demonstrate the efficacy of a tripolar antenna, which is specifically designed for IoT devices, in harsh environments through simulations and experimental data. Second, to develop antenna selection strategies to utilize polarized signals received at the antenna, considering the restrictions imposed due to resource limitations of the IoT devices. Finally, to conduct comparative analyses on the existing standard diversity techniques and proposed approaches, in conjunction with experimental data. Accordingly, this dissertation presents the testing results of tripolar antenna integrated with Arduino based IoT devices deployed in environments likely to be experienced by IoT devices in real life applications. Both simulation and experimental results from single point-to-point wireless links demonstrate the advantage of utilizing tripolar antennas in harsh propagation conditions over single branch antenna. Motivated by these empirical results, we deploy a small-scale IoT network with tripolar antenna based nodes to analyze the impact of tripolar antenna on neighbor nodes performance as well as to investigate end-to-end network performance. This work illustrates that the selection of antenna branches, while considering network architecture and the level of congestion on the repeater nodes, minimizes excessive antenna switching and energy consumption. Similar results are shown for IoT networks with predetermined and dynamic routing protocols, where the proposed techniques yielded lower energy consumption than the conventional diversity schemes. Furthermore, a probabilistic, low complexity antenna selection approach based on Hidden Markov model is proposed and implemented on wireless sensor nodes aiming to reduce energy consumption and improve diversity gain. Finally, we develop a dual-hop based technique where a node selects the antenna element for optimal performance based on its immediate network neighbors antenna configuration status during selection. The performance of the proposed technique, which is verified through simulation and measured data, illustrates the importance of considering network-wide evaluations of antenna selection techniques

This thesis presents a set of contributions for channel modeling and characterization of real radio channels delineating aspects related with the favorable propagation for massive MIMO systems. We will discuss about how to proceed for characterizing radio channels in an real environment , data processing, and analysis of favorable conditions. In a second part, we focused on determination of some theoretical aspects of the Massive MIMO technology using properties of Wishart distribution matrices. We initially present a contribution on the application of ESPRIT algorithm for estimating a multidimensional set of measured data. We have obtained data by frequency sweep carried out by a vector network analyzer(VNA) and adapted it to fit in the ESPRIT algorithm. We show how to remove antenna pattern gain using virtual antenna arrays and how to use a channel model generator based on radio channel measurements of real environments. The measurements were conducted at the frequency of 10.1 GHz and 500 MHz bandwidth. By using a channel model generator, we have explored beyond the simulation of Gaussian Distributions. We will introduce the concept of favorable propagation and analyze the line-of-sight conditions using ULA and URA array shapes. As a research novelty, we will show the benefits of exploiting an extra degree of freedom due to the choice of the antenna shapes and amount of antenna elements. We observe these properties through the distribution of the Gramian Matrices. Next, we extend the same rationale to channel matrices generated from real channels and we verify that the properties are still valid. In a second part of the research work, we included more than one antenna in the mobile terminals and calculated the outage probability for several antenna configurations and arbitrary number users. We introduce a formulation for mutual information and then we calculate exact results in a case with two users with two antennas in both Base Station (BS) and User Terminals (UT). Since the formulations to the exact derivation for cases with more antennas and users seems to be intricate, we propose a Gaussian approximation solution to simplify the problem. We validated this approximation with Monte Carlo simulations for different signal-to-noise ratiosDoutoradoTelecomunicações e TelemáticaDoutor em Engenharia Elétrica248416/2013-8CNPQCAPE
