    Adaptive Spectral Mapping for Real-Time Dispersive Refraction

    Spectral rendering, or the synthesis of images by taking into account the wavelengths of light, allows effects otherwise impossible with other methods. One of these effects is dispersion, the phenomenon that creates a rainbow when white light shines through a prism. Spectral rendering has previously remained in the realm of off-line rendering (with a few exceptions) due to the extensive computation required to keep track of individual light wavelengths. Caustics, the focusing and de-focusing of light through a refractive medium, can be interpreted as a special case of dispersion where all the wavelengths travel together. This thesis extends Adaptive Caustic Mapping, a previously proposed caustics mapping algorithm, to handle spectral dispersion. Because ACM can display caustics in real-time, it is quite amenable to be extended to handle the more general case of dispersion. A method is presented that runs in screen-space and is fast enough to display plausible dispersion phenomena in real-time at interactive frame rates

    Control on Color Reflection Behavior

    Nowadays, most of the computation of a rendering system is done in color space. Thus, the whole process, from acquisition (with a digital camera) and modelisation to display (on CRT/LCD displays) is color-based. Unfortunately, the reflection of a light on a surface is based on an approximation which can reduce the preservation of the color appearance. In this report, we present a new approach for color-based reflection that introduces a low overhead for an easy integration in current rendering systems. This approach allows also an easier control on the reflection behavior.     Isotropic and Anisotropic Interfaced Lambertian Microfacets

    Specular microfacet distributions have been successfully employed by many authors for representing materials glossiness, and they are generally combined with a Lambertian term that accounts for the colored aspect. Such a representation makes use of the Fresnel reflectance factor at the interface, but the transmission factor is often ignored. In addition, the generalization to microfacet distributions with a more general reflectance is known to be complex, since it requires to solve an angular integral that has no analytical solution. This paper proposes a complete framework for physically handling both reflection and transmission with microfacet distributions. First, we show how transmission affects reflectance of an interfaced Lambertian model, and provide an analytical description of an individual microfacet reflectance. Second, we describe a method for handling distributions of such microfacets in any physically based Monte-Carlo rendering systems. Our approach generalizes several previous models, including flat Lambertian materials as well as specular and Lambertian microfacets.     Advanced photonic and electronic systems - WILGA 2017

    WILGA annual symposium on advanced photonic and electronic systems has been organized by young scientist for young scientists since two decades. It traditionally gathers more than 350 young researchers and their tutors. Ph.D students and graduates present their recent achievements during well attended oral sessions. Wilga is a very good digest of Ph.D. works carried out at technical universities in electronics and photonics, as well as information sciences throughout Poland and some neighboring countries. Publishing patronage over Wilga keep Elektronika technical journal by SEP, IJET by PAN and Proceedings of SPIE. The latter world editorial series publishes annually more than 200 papers from Wilga. Wilga 2017 was the XL edition of this meeting. The following topical tracks were distinguished: photonics, electronics, information technologies and system research. The article is a digest of some chosen works presented during Wilga 2017 symposium. WILGA 2017 works were published in Proc. SPIE vol.10445

    Automated inverse-rendering techniques for realistic 3D artefact compositing in 2D photographs

    PhD ThesisThe process of acquiring images of a scene and modifying the defining structural features of the scene through the insertion of artefacts is known in literature as compositing. The process can take effect in the 2D domain (where the artefact originates from a 2D image and is inserted into a 2D image), or in the 3D domain (the artefact is defined as a dense 3D triangulated mesh, with textures describing its material properties). Compositing originated as a solution to enhancing, repairing, and more broadly editing photographs and video data alike in the film industry as part of the post-production stage. This is generally thought of as carrying out operations in a 2D domain (a single image with a known width, height, and colour data). The operations involved are sequential and entail separating the foreground from the background (matting), or identifying features from contour (feature matching and segmentation) with the purpose of introducing new data in the original. Since then, compositing techniques have gained more traction in the emerging fields of Mixed Reality (MR), Augmented Reality (AR), robotics and machine vision (scene understanding, scene reconstruction, autonomous navigation). When focusing on the 3D domain, compositing can be translated into a pipeline 1 - the incipient stage acquires the scene data, which then undergoes a number of processing steps aimed at inferring structural properties that ultimately allow for the placement of 3D artefacts anywhere within the scene, rendering a plausible and consistent result with regard to the physical properties of the initial input. This generic approach becomes challenging in the absence of user annotation and labelling of scene geometry, light sources and their respective magnitude and orientation, as well as a clear object segmentation and knowledge of surface properties. A single image, a stereo pair, or even a short image stream may not hold enough information regarding the shape or illumination of the scene, however, increasing the input data will only incur an extensive time penalty which is an established challenge in the field. Recent state-of-the-art methods address the difficulty of inference in the absence of 1In the present document, the term pipeline refers to a software solution formed of stand-alone modules or stages. Moreover, each module is assumed to take an input set and output data for the following stage, where each module addresses a single type of problem only. data, nonetheless, they do not attempt to solve the challenge of compositing artefacts between existing scene geometry, or cater for the inclusion of new geometry behind complex surface materials such as translucent glass or in front of reflective surfaces. The present work focuses on the compositing in the 3D domain and brings forth a software framework 2 that contributes solutions to a number of challenges encountered in the field, including the ability to render physically-accurate soft shadows in the absence of user annotate scene properties or RGB-D data. Another contribution consists in the timely manner in which the framework achieves a believable result compared to the other compositing methods which rely on offline rendering. The availability of proprietary hardware and user expertise are two of the main factors that are not required in order to achieve a fast and reliable results within the current framework

    Towards Predictive Rendering in Virtual Reality

    The strive for generating predictive images, i.e., images representing radiometrically correct renditions of reality, has been a longstanding problem in computer graphics. The exactness of such images is extremely important for Virtual Reality applications like Virtual Prototyping, where users need to make decisions impacting large investments based on the simulated images. Unfortunately, generation of predictive imagery is still an unsolved problem due to manifold reasons, especially if real-time restrictions apply. First, existing scenes used for rendering are not modeled accurately enough to create predictive images. Second, even with huge computational efforts existing rendering algorithms are not able to produce radiometrically correct images. Third, current display devices need to convert rendered images into some low-dimensional color space, which prohibits display of radiometrically correct images. Overcoming these limitations is the focus of current state-of-the-art research. This thesis also contributes to this task. First, it briefly introduces the necessary background and identifies the steps required for real-time predictive image generation. Then, existing techniques targeting these steps are presented and their limitations are pointed out. To solve some of the remaining problems, novel techniques are proposed. They cover various steps in the predictive image generation process, ranging from accurate scene modeling over efficient data representation to high-quality, real-time rendering. A special focus of this thesis lays on real-time generation of predictive images using bidirectional texture functions (BTFs), i.e., very accurate representations for spatially varying surface materials. The techniques proposed by this thesis enable efficient handling of BTFs by compressing the huge amount of data contained in this material representation, applying them to geometric surfaces using texture and BTF synthesis techniques, and rendering BTF covered objects in real-time. Further approaches proposed in this thesis target inclusion of real-time global illumination effects or more efficient rendering using novel level-of-detail representations for geometric objects. Finally, this thesis assesses the rendering quality achievable with BTF materials, indicating a significant increase in realism but also confirming the remainder of problems to be solved to achieve truly predictive image generation

    CACIC’13 was the nineteenth Congress in the CACIC series. It was organized by the Department of Computer Systems at the CAECE University in Mar del Plata. The Congress included 13 Workshops with 165 accepted papers, 5 Conferences, 3 invited tutorials, different meetings related with Computer Science Education (Professors, PhD students, Curricula) and an International School with 5 courses. CACIC 2013 was organized following the traditional Congress format, with 13 Workshops covering a diversity of dimensions of Computer Science Research. Each topic was supervised by a committee of 3-5 chairs of different Universities. The call for papers attracted a total of 247 submissions. An average of 2.5 review reports were collected for each paper, for a grand total of 676 review reports that involved about 210 different reviewers.     Wave Propagation in Materials for Modern Applications

    In the recent decades, there has been a growing interest in micro- and nanotechnology. The advances in nanotechnology give rise to new applications and new types of materials with unique electromagnetic and mechanical properties. This book is devoted to the modern methods in electrodynamics and acoustics, which have been developed to describe wave propagation in these modern materials and nanodevices. The book consists of original works of leading scientists in the field of wave propagation who produced new theoretical and experimental methods in the research field and obtained new and important results. The first part of the book consists of chapters with general mathematical methods and approaches to the problem of wave propagation. A special attention is attracted to the advanced numerical methods fruitfully applied in the field of wave propagation. The second part of the book is devoted to the problems of wave propagation in newly developed metamaterials, micro- and nanostructures and porous media. In this part the interested reader will find important and fundamental results on electromagnetic wave propagation in media with negative refraction index and electromagnetic imaging in devices based on the materials. The third part of the book is devoted to the problems of wave propagation in elastic and piezoelectric media. In the fourth part, the works on the problems of wave propagation in plasma are collected. The fifth, sixth and seventh parts are devoted to the problems of wave propagation in media with chemical reactions, in nonlinear and disperse media, respectively. And finally, in the eighth part of the book some experimental methods in wave propagations are considered. It is necessary to emphasize that this book is not a textbook. It is important that the results combined in it are taken “from the desks of researchers“. Therefore, I am sure that in this book the interested and actively working readers (scientists, engineers and students) will find many interesting results and new ideas

    Pattern recognition is a very wide research field. It involves factors as diverse as sensors, feature extraction, pattern classification, decision fusion, applications and others. The signals processed are commonly one, two or three dimensional, the processing is done in real- time or takes hours and days, some systems look for one narrow object class, others search huge databases for entries with at least a small amount of similarity. No single person can claim expertise across the whole field, which develops rapidly, updates its paradigms and comprehends several philosophical approaches. This book reflects this diversity by presenting a selection of recent developments within the area of pattern recognition and related fields. It covers theoretical advances in classification and feature extraction as well as application-oriented works. Authors of these 25 works present and advocate recent achievements of their research related to the field of pattern recognition
