    Multicomputer communication system

A local area network is provided for a plurality of autonomous computers which operate at different rates and under different protocols coupled by network bus adapters to a global bus. A host computer (HC) divides a message file to be transmitted into blocks, each with a header that includes a data type identifier and a trailer. The associated network bus adapter (NBA) then divides the data into packets, each with a header to which a transport header and trailer is added with frame type code which specifies one of three modes of addressing in the transmission of data, namely a physical address mode for computer to computer transmission using two bytes for source and destination addresses, a logical address mode and a data type mode. In the logical address mode, one of the two addressing bytes contains a logical channel number (LCN) established between the transmitting and one or more receiving computers. In the data type mode, one of the addressing bytes contains a code identifying the type of data

Digital System Design - Use of Microcontroller

Embedded systems are today, widely deployed in just about every piece of machinery from toasters to spacecraft. Embedded system designers face many challenges. They are asked to produce increasingly complex systems using the latest technologies, but these technologies are changing faster than ever. They are asked to produce better quality designs with a shorter time-to-market. They are asked to implement increasingly complex functionality but more importantly to satisfy numerous other constraints. To achieve the current goals of design, the designer must be aware with such design constraints and more importantly, the factors that have a direct effect on them. One of the challenges facing embedded system designers is the selection of the optimum processor for the application in hand; single-purpose, general-purpose or application specific. Microcontrollers are one member of the family of the application specific processors. The book concentrates on the use of microcontroller as the embedded system?s processor, and how to use it in many embedded system applications. The book covers both the hardware and software aspects needed to design using microcontroller. The book is ideal for undergraduate students and also the engineers that are working in the field of digital system design.Contents• Preface;• Process design metrics;• A systems approach to digital system design;• Introduction to microcontrollers and microprocessors;• Instructions and Instruction sets;• Machine language and assembly language;• System memory; Timers, counters and watchdog timer;• Interfacing to local devices / peripherals;• Analogue data and the analogue I/O subsystem;• Multiprocessor communications;• Serial Communications and Network-based interfaces

Design of components for a generic microprocessor architecture

    Get PDF
The objective of this thesis was to develop a generic microprocessor design that can be adapted to many of the existing 16 bit microprocessors. Common features of various microprocessors were used to develop the design of many generic components which can then be used to design the required microprocessors instead of custom-designing each one of them separately. The components were designed using a CISC based micro-programmed design approach as that was more suitable in terms of design and verification time for generic implementation. The generic parts designed include the Register File for temporary data storage, the Effective Address Calculator that generates the effective address for the operand, the Barrel Shifter for fast multiply/divide operations and the Priority Encoder for determining the processor state

A Microprocessor-based multivariable interactive control system

    Get PDF
This study outlines the various types of control systems and reviews the necessary mathematical techniques to solve the problem of multivariable interactive control. The characteristics as well as the state representation for control processes involving either p or v type canonical structures are discussed. Next, the characteristics of multivariable interactive discrete control systems are discussed in detail. The advantages of flexibility and speed of microprocessors are used as powerful tools to implement a microprocessor-based system can be employed to control discrete processes. To demonstrate a practical application of a microprocessor-based system in a multivariable interactive discrete process, the algorithm and software (Assembly Language) is developed for a special engine control system selected as the model

Hardware Realization of a General Purpose FFT Processor in a Distributed Processing Configuration

    Get PDF
An efficient hardware implementation of a 1024-point sequential FFT processor is described. The processor has been configured in a distributed processing system with an INTEL 8086 microprocessor. In case of real signals, it performs a 1024-point transform of two real signals, simultaneously within the same period and subsequently does spectral separation 2.6 msec. Its general purpose capability and the case of interfacing it with standard mini/micro computers are highlighted with a specific illustrations using the INTEL 8086 microprocessor

Intelligent redundant actuation system requirements and preliminary system design

    Get PDF
Several redundant actuation system configurations were designed and demonstrated to satisfy the stringent operational requirements of advanced flight control systems. However, this has been accomplished largely through brute force hardware redundancy, resulting in significantly increased computational requirements on the flight control computers which perform the failure analysis and reconfiguration management. Modern technology now provides powerful, low-cost microprocessors which are effective in performing failure isolation and configuration management at the local actuator level. One such concept, called an Intelligent Redundant Actuation System (IRAS), significantly reduces the flight control computer requirements and performs the local tasks more comprehensively than previously feasible. The requirements and preliminary design of an experimental laboratory system capable of demonstrating the concept and sufficiently flexible to explore a variety of configurations are discussed
