    Single-picture reconstruction and rendering of trees for plausible vegetation synthesis

    State-of-the-art approaches for tree reconstruction either put limiting constraints on the input side (requiring multiple photographs, a scanned point cloud or intensive user input) or provide a representation only suitable for front views of the tree. In this paper we present a complete pipeline for synthesizing and rendering detailed trees from a single photograph with minimal user effort. Since the overall shape and appearance of each tree is recovered from a single photograph of the tree crown, artists can benefit from georeferenced images to populate landscapes with native tree species. A key element of our approach is a compact representation of dense tree crowns through a radial distance map. Our first contribution is an automatic algorithm for generating such representations from a single exemplar image of a tree. We create a rough estimate of the crown shape by solving a thin-plate energy minimization problem, and then add detail through a simplified shape-from-shading approach. The use of seamless texture synthesis results in an image-based representation that can be rendered from arbitrary view directions at different levels of detail. Distant trees benefit from an output-sensitive algorithm inspired on relief mapping. For close-up trees we use a billboard cloud where leaflets are distributed inside the crown shape through a space colonization algorithm. In both cases our representation ensures efficient preservation of the crown shape. Major benefits of our approach include: it recovers the overall shape from a single tree image, involves no tree modeling knowledge and minimal authoring effort, and the associated image-based representation is easy to compress and thus suitable for network streaming.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A LiDAR Point Cloud Generator: from a Virtual World to Autonomous Driving

    3D LiDAR scanners are playing an increasingly important role in autonomous driving as they can generate depth information of the environment. However, creating large 3D LiDAR point cloud datasets with point-level labels requires a significant amount of manual annotation. This jeopardizes the efficient development of supervised deep learning algorithms which are often data-hungry. We present a framework to rapidly create point clouds with accurate point-level labels from a computer game. The framework supports data collection from both auto-driving scenes and user-configured scenes. Point clouds from auto-driving scenes can be used as training data for deep learning algorithms, while point clouds from user-configured scenes can be used to systematically test the vulnerability of a neural network, and use the falsifying examples to make the neural network more robust through retraining. In addition, the scene images can be captured simultaneously in order for sensor fusion tasks, with a method proposed to do automatic calibration between the point clouds and captured scene images. We show a significant improvement in accuracy (+9%) in point cloud segmentation by augmenting the training dataset with the generated synthesized data. Our experiments also show by testing and retraining the network using point clouds from user-configured scenes, the weakness/blind spots of the neural network can be fixed

    Non-rigid Reconstruction with a Single Moving RGB-D Camera

    We present a novel non-rigid reconstruction method using a moving RGB-D camera. Current approaches use only non-rigid part of the scene and completely ignore the rigid background. Non-rigid parts often lack sufficient geometric and photometric information for tracking large frame-to-frame motion. Our approach uses camera pose estimated from the rigid background for foreground tracking. This enables robust foreground tracking in situations where large frame-to-frame motion occurs. Moreover, we are proposing a multi-scale deformation graph which improves non-rigid tracking without compromising the quality of the reconstruction. We are also contributing a synthetic dataset which is made publically available for evaluating non-rigid reconstruction methods. The dataset provides frame-by-frame ground truth geometry of the scene, the camera trajectory, and masks for background foreground. Experimental results show that our approach is more robust in handling larger frame-to-frame motions and provides better reconstruction compared to state-of-the-art approaches.Comment: Accepted in International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2018

    Vessel tractography using an intensity based tensor model with branch detection

    In this paper, we present a tubular structure seg- mentation method that utilizes a second order tensor constructed from directional intensity measurements, which is inspired from diffusion tensor image (DTI) modeling. The constructed anisotropic tensor which is fit inside a vessel drives the segmen- tation analogously to a tractography approach in DTI. Our model is initialized at a single seed point and is capable of capturing whole vessel trees by an automatic branch detection algorithm developed in the same framework. The centerline of the vessel as well as its thickness is extracted. Performance results within the Rotterdam Coronary Artery Algorithm Evaluation framework are provided for comparison with existing techniques. 96.4% average overlap with ground truth delineated by experts is obtained in addition to other measures reported in the paper. Moreover, we demonstrate further quantitative results over synthetic vascular datasets, and we provide quantitative experiments for branch detection on patient Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) volumes, as well as qualitative evaluations on the same CTA datasets, from visual scores by a cardiologist expert

    Template-Cut: A Pattern-Based Segmentation Paradigm

    We present a scale-invariant, template-based segmentation paradigm that sets up a graph and performs a graph cut to separate an object from the background. Typically graph-based schemes distribute the nodes of the graph uniformly and equidistantly on the image, and use a regularizer to bias the cut towards a particular shape. The strategy of uniform and equidistant nodes does not allow the cut to prefer more complex structures, especially when areas of the object are indistinguishable from the background. We propose a solution by introducing the concept of a "template shape" of the target object in which the nodes are sampled non-uniformly and non-equidistantly on the image. We evaluate it on 2D-images where the object's textures and backgrounds are similar, and large areas of the object have the same gray level appearance as the background.     Deep Interactive Region Segmentation and Captioning

    With recent innovations in dense image captioning, it is now possible to describe every object of the scene with a caption while objects are determined by bounding boxes. However, interpretation of such an output is not trivial due to the existence of many overlapping bounding boxes. Furthermore, in current captioning frameworks, the user is not able to involve personal preferences to exclude out of interest areas. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid deep learning architecture for interactive region segmentation and captioning where the user is able to specify an arbitrary region of the image that should be processed. To this end, a dedicated Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) named Lyncean FCN (LFCN) is trained using our special training data to isolate the User Intention Region (UIR) as the output of an efficient segmentation. In parallel, a dense image captioning model is utilized to provide a wide variety of captions for that region. Then, the UIR will be explained with the caption of the best match bounding box. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that provides such a comprehensive output. Our experiments show the superiority of the proposed approach over state-of-the-art interactive segmentation methods on several well-known datasets. In addition, replacement of the bounding boxes with the result of the interactive segmentation leads to a better understanding of the dense image captioning output as well as accuracy enhancement for the object detection in terms of Intersection over Union (IoU).Comment: 17, pages, 9 figure

    Co-Fusion: Real-time Segmentation, Tracking and Fusion of Multiple Objects

    In this paper we introduce Co-Fusion, a dense SLAM system that takes a live stream of RGB-D images as input and segments the scene into different objects (using either motion or semantic cues) while simultaneously tracking and reconstructing their 3D shape in real time. We use a multiple model fitting approach where each object can move independently from the background and still be effectively tracked and its shape fused over time using only the information from pixels associated with that object label. Previous attempts to deal with dynamic scenes have typically considered moving regions as outliers, and consequently do not model their shape or track their motion over time. In contrast, we enable the robot to maintain 3D models for each of the segmented objects and to improve them over time through fusion.
