Interactive Illustration of Collage for Children with Folktale E-book

    Get PDF
It is always challenging to teach children foreign languages, due to the difficulty of learning and their short attention span. To address the challenge and take advantage of the popularity of touchable tablets and smartphones, we propose an educational folktale e-book (EFE-Book) application with an interactive illustratable tool. EFE-Book is developed to teach preschool children to learn foreign languages by telling folktales with illustrations. To encourage effective learning, EFE-Book provides an interactive collage tool that enables users to create collage-based illustrations by hand. We propose a Voronoi diagram based approach to model paper tiles for the development of EFE-Book. With EFE-Book, the user can create colored paper tiles and attach them to the predesigned sketch through touch interface, such as Apple iPad

I'll Tell the Story My Way! Multi-perspective, Multimodal Storytelling in an Elementary Classroom

The project investigated how elementary students engaged in creating 21st-century narratives with multiple perspective storylines enriched with images, videos and sound. The project was implemented as three substudies - Study A, B & C, in specific instructional contexts. Study A & B employed the use of digital technology and Study C did not. All were conducted in two Toronto elementary schools over a period of six months with a total of forty-four students (comprised of 31 girls and 13 boys) aged 10 to 12, and with the collaboration of their teachers. The data collection took the form of participant observation (Spradley,1980) and detailed writing analysis. The initial procedure used a pictographic map of the structure of Snow White from which 4 class-created stories were generated, resulting in 55 students stories told from the various characters perspectives. The results showed the projects activities empowered the students and engaged them. Perspective taking in their stories allowed students to examine the lives of others, emotionally process the story, and empathize with their story characters predicaments. Findings from the project were 1) students who wrote on computers produced more text and were more reflective of their thoughts; 2) students did not collaborate in their writing when using computers while students writing in a traditional way with pencils and paper notebooks did; 3) boys and girls had distinctive narrative styles even when using the same storys content and structure; and 4) students did not use the technology as a tool to enhance personal creativity but rather as a substitute. Perspective writing may be easy to implement into practice and there is an indication that the method is widely applicable

Folk culture and digital enriched books : the case study of the digital enriched tool “e-anagnosis”

    Get PDF
This proposal refers to the dissemination and projection of folk culture through the use of digital books (e-books) and more specifically through enriched and immersive e-books. The enriched e-books are developed in parallel to the e-book such as ePUB, PDF and Mobipocket, the digital or electronic book such as HTML, TXT, RTF, DOC, etc and devices used as e-readers such as the e-book reader, the iPAD and other tablets as well as the PC. The enriched e-book is a digital edition of a book which is digitally enriched with a variety of items such as videos, photos, animations, quizzes, maps and special symbology that leads to hyperlinked locations inside and outside of the book such as Wikipedia, youtube, dictionaries and thesauri as well as other sources. The relation of folk culture with digital reading (e-reading) can be used in education and training initially through the creation of learning assets. These learning assets can then evolve to complex learning resources and be re-used as digital material units aiming at education and training. This paper focuses on the presentation of commercial and public efforts to enrich digital books, such as: a) the platform with the enriched digital schoolbooks by the Ministry of Education in Greece (digital school), and b) the Greek application for digital reading and writing of rich digital books with the title “e- Anagnosis” (Marginalia Composer & Paspartu), which can be used in folk culture with a specific example (case study).peer-reviewe

An Interdisciplinary Study of Africa for Tens : The Dogon of Mali

    Get PDF
This thesis presents a Social Studies curriculum guide on Africa, specifically, the Dogon people of Mali. It contains a detailed outline of possible curricular units on The Geography of Africa and Mali; Traditional Cultural Practices of the Dogon; and the Dogon Today. Related lesson plans explore ways to teach and learn about the Dogon through age-appropriate primary and secondary sources, especially by reading Dogon stories, looking at Dogon art, architecture, and ceremonies, and listening to Dogon music. These resources are discussed at length in the Annotated List of Classroom Resources section of this thesis. The curriculum also includes a step-by-step lesson for a self-guided visit to the African galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and suggests pre and post-museum activities. The purpose of this study aims to provide students with the time and space necessary to solidify a base of knowledge about a specific group of people. Ultimately, a sense of specificity and authenticity will be developed about a continent of people that are usually studied as a single homogeneous and unchanging whole. The concentration on the arts aims to help the students see and hear the distinctions that exist among different groups of people within Africa; helping students segue from concrete to abstract thinking; gaining more sophisticated ideas about why societies develop certain artistic styles and traditions; and how art becomes meaningful only when studied in its proper cultural, spiritual, and geographical context
