Sharing Human-Generated Observations by Integrating HMI and the Semantic Sensor Web
Current âInternet of Thingsâ concepts point to a future where connected objects gather meaningful information about their environment and share it with other objects and people. In particular, objects embedding Human Machine Interaction (HMI), such as mobile devices and, increasingly, connected vehicles, home appliances, urban interactive infrastructures, etc., may not only be conceived as sources of sensor information, but, through interaction with their users, they can also produce highly valuable context-aware human-generated observations. We believe that the great promise offered by combining and sharing all of the different sources of information available can be realized through the integration of HMI and Semantic Sensor Web technologies. This paper presents a technological framework that harmonizes two of the most influential HMI and Sensor Web initiatives: the W3Câs Multimodal Architecture and Interfaces (MMI) and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) with its semantic extension, respectively. Although the proposed framework is general enough to be applied in a variety of connected objects integrating HMI, a particular development is presented for a connected car scenario where driversâ observations about the traffic or their environment are shared across the Semantic Sensor Web. For implementation and evaluation purposes an on-board OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative) architecture was built, integrating several available HMI, Sensor Web and Semantic Web technologies. Learning and Management for Internet-of-Things: Accounting for Adaptivity and Scalability
Internet-of-Things (IoT) envisions an intelligent infrastructure of networked
smart devices offering task-specific monitoring and control services. The
unique features of IoT include extreme heterogeneity, massive number of
devices, and unpredictable dynamics partially due to human interaction. These
call for foundational innovations in network design and management. Ideally, it
should allow efficient adaptation to changing environments, and low-cost
implementation scalable to massive number of devices, subject to stringent
latency constraints. To this end, the overarching goal of this paper is to
outline a unified framework for online learning and management policies in IoT
through joint advances in communication, networking, learning, and
optimization. From the network architecture vantage point, the unified
framework leverages a promising fog architecture that enables smart devices to
have proximity access to cloud functionalities at the network edge, along the
cloud-to-things continuum. From the algorithmic perspective, key innovations
target online approaches adaptive to different degrees of nonstationarity in
IoT dynamics, and their scalable model-free implementation under limited
feedback that motivates blind or bandit approaches. The proposed framework
aspires to offer a stepping stone that leads to systematic designs and analysis
of task-specific learning and management schemes for IoT, along with a host of

Soft-Defined Heterogeneous Vehicular Network: Architecture and Challenges
Heterogeneous Vehicular NETworks (HetVNETs) can meet various
quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for intelligent transport system (ITS)
services by integrating different access networks coherently. However, the
current network architecture for HetVNET cannot efficiently deal with the
increasing demands of rapidly changing network landscape. Thanks to the
centralization and flexibility of the cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN),
soft-defined networking (SDN) can conveniently be applied to support the
dynamic nature of future HetVNET functions and various applications while
reducing the operating costs. In this paper, we first propose the multi-layer
Cloud RAN architecture for implementing the new network, where the multi-domain
resources can be exploited as needed for vehicle users. Then, the high-level
design of soft-defined HetVNET is presented in detail. Finally, we briefly
discuss key challenges and solutions for this new network, corroborating its
feasibility in the emerging fifth-generation (5G) era
Business Case and Technology Analysis for 5G Low Latency Applications
A large number of new consumer and industrial applications are likely to
change the classic operator's business models and provide a wide range of new
markets to enter. This article analyses the most relevant 5G use cases that
require ultra-low latency, from both technical and business perspectives. Low
latency services pose challenging requirements to the network, and to fulfill
them operators need to invest in costly changes in their network. In this
sense, it is not clear whether such investments are going to be amortized with
these new business models. In light of this, specific applications and
requirements are described and the potential market benefits for operators are
analysed. Conclusions show that operators have clear opportunities to add value
and position themselves strongly with the increasing number of services to be

Closed-loop Bayesian Semantic Data Fusion for Collaborative Human-Autonomy Target Search
In search applications, autonomous unmanned vehicles must be able to
efficiently reacquire and localize mobile targets that can remain out of view
for long periods of time in large spaces. As such, all available information
sources must be actively leveraged -- including imprecise but readily available
semantic observations provided by humans. To achieve this, this work develops
and validates a novel collaborative human-machine sensing solution for dynamic
target search. Our approach uses continuous partially observable Markov
decision process (CPOMDP) planning to generate vehicle trajectories that
optimally exploit imperfect detection data from onboard sensors, as well as
semantic natural language observations that can be specifically requested from
human sensors. The key innovation is a scalable hierarchical Gaussian mixture
model formulation for efficiently solving CPOMDPs with semantic observations in
continuous dynamic state spaces. The approach is demonstrated and validated
with a real human-robot team engaged in dynamic indoor target search and

Architectures for smart end-user services in the power grid
Abstract-The increase of distributed renewable electricity generators, such as solar cells and wind turbines, requires a new energy management system. These distributed generators introduce bidirectional energy flows in the low-voltage power grid, requiring novel coordination mechanisms to balance local supply and demand. Closed solutions exist for energy management on the level of individual homes. However, no service architectures have been defined that allow the growing number of end-users to interact with the other power consumers and generators and to get involved in more rational energy consumption patterns using intuitive applications. We therefore present a common service architecture that allows houses with renewable energy generation and smart energy devices to plug into a distributed energy management system, integrated with the public power grid. Next to the technical details, we focus on the usability aspects of the end-user applications in order to contribute to high service adoption and optimal user involvement. The presented architecture facilitates end-users to reduce net energy consumption, enables power grid providers to better balance supply and demand, and allows new actors to join with new services. We present a novel simulator that allows to evaluate both the power grid and data communication aspects, and illustrate a 22% reduction of the peak load by deploying a central coordinator inside the home gateway of an end-user
