TopExNet: Entity-Centric Network Topic Exploration in News Streams
The recent introduction of entity-centric implicit network representations of
unstructured text offers novel ways for exploring entity relations in document
collections and streams efficiently and interactively. Here, we present
TopExNet as a tool for exploring entity-centric network topics in streams of
news articles. The application is available as a web service at

Structuring visual exploratory analysis of skill demand
The analysis of increasingly large and diverse data for meaningful interpretation and question answering is handicapped by human cognitive limitations. Consequently, semi-automatic abstraction of complex data within structured information spaces becomes increasingly important, if its knowledge content is to support intuitive, exploratory discovery. Exploration of skill demand is an area where regularly updated, multi-dimensional data may be exploited to assess capability within the workforce to manage the demands of the modern, technology- and data-driven economy. The knowledge derived may be employed by skilled practitioners in defining career pathways, to identify where, when and how to update their skillsets in line with advancing technology and changing work demands. This same knowledge may also be used to identify the combination of skills essential in recruiting for new roles. To address the challenges inherent in exploring the complex, heterogeneous, dynamic data that feeds into such applications, we investigate the use of an ontology to guide structuring of the information space, to allow individuals and institutions to interactively explore and interpret the dynamic skill demand landscape for their specific needs. As a test case we consider the relatively new and highly dynamic field of Data Science, where insightful, exploratory data analysis and knowledge discovery are critical. We employ context-driven and task-centred scenarios to explore our research questions and guide iterative design, development and formative evaluation of our ontology-driven, visual exploratory discovery and analysis approach, to measure where it adds value to usersā analytical activity. Our findings reinforce the potential in our approach, and point us to future paths to build on
Video Data Visualization System: Semantic Classification And Personalization
We present in this paper an intelligent video data visualization tool, based
on semantic classification, for retrieving and exploring a large scale corpus
of videos. Our work is based on semantic classification resulting from semantic
analysis of video. The obtained classes will be projected in the visualization
space. The graph is represented by nodes and edges, the nodes are the keyframes
of video documents and the edges are the relation between documents and the
classes of documents. Finally, we construct the user's profile, based on the
interaction with the system, to render the system more adequate to its
references.Comment: graphic
Alexandria: Extensible Framework for Rapid Exploration of Social Media
The Alexandria system under development at IBM Research provides an
extensible framework and platform for supporting a variety of big-data
analytics and visualizations. The system is currently focused on enabling rapid
exploration of text-based social media data. The system provides tools to help
with constructing "domain models" (i.e., families of keywords and extractors to
enable focus on tweets and other social media documents relevant to a project),
to rapidly extract and segment the relevant social media and its authors, to
apply further analytics (such as finding trends and anomalous terms), and
visualizing the results. The system architecture is centered around a variety
of REST-based service APIs to enable flexible orchestration of the system
capabilities; these are especially useful to support knowledge-worker driven
iterative exploration of social phenomena. The architecture also enables rapid
integration of Alexandria capabilities with other social media analytics
system, as has been demonstrated through an integration with IBM Research's
SystemG. This paper describes a prototypical usage scenario for Alexandria,
along with the architecture and key underlying analytics.Comment: 8 page
K-Space at TRECVid 2008
In this paper we describe K-Spaceās participation in TRECVid 2008 in the interactive search task. For 2008 the K-Space group performed one of the largest interactive video information retrieval experiments conducted in a laboratory setting. We had three institutions participating in a multi-site multi-system experiment. In total 36 users participated, 12 each from Dublin City University (DCU, Ireland), University of Glasgow (GU, Scotland) and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI, the Netherlands). Three user interfaces were developed, two from DCU which were also used in 2007 as well as an interface from GU. All interfaces leveraged the same search service. Using a latin squares arrangement, each user conducted 12 topics, leading in total to 6 runs per site, 18 in total. We officially submitted for evaluation 3 of these runs to NIST with an additional expert run using a 4th system. Our submitted runs performed around the median. In this paper we will present an overview of the search system utilized, the experimental setup and a preliminary analysis of our results
The Lowlands team at TRECVID 2007
In this report we summarize our methods and results for the search tasks in\ud
TRECVID 2007. We employ two different kinds of search: purely ASR based and\ud
purely concept based search. However, there is not significant difference of the\ud
performance of the two systems. Using neighboring shots for the combination of\ud
two concepts seems to be beneficial. General preprocessing of queries increased\ud
the performance and choosing detector sources helped. However, for all automatic\ud
search components we need to perform further investigations
