Playing for Data: Ground Truth from Computer Games
Recent progress in computer vision has been driven by high-capacity models
trained on large datasets. Unfortunately, creating large datasets with
pixel-level labels has been extremely costly due to the amount of human effort
required. In this paper, we present an approach to rapidly creating
pixel-accurate semantic label maps for images extracted from modern computer
games. Although the source code and the internal operation of commercial games
are inaccessible, we show that associations between image patches can be
reconstructed from the communication between the game and the graphics
hardware. This enables rapid propagation of semantic labels within and across
images synthesized by the game, with no access to the source code or the
content. We validate the presented approach by producing dense pixel-level
semantic annotations for 25 thousand images synthesized by a photorealistic
open-world computer game. Experiments on semantic segmentation datasets show
that using the acquired data to supplement real-world images significantly
increases accuracy and that the acquired data enables reducing the amount of
hand-labeled real-world data: models trained with game data and just 1/3 of the
CamVid training set outperform models trained on the complete CamVid training

A LiDAR Point Cloud Generator: from a Virtual World to Autonomous Driving
3D LiDAR scanners are playing an increasingly important role in autonomous
driving as they can generate depth information of the environment. However,
creating large 3D LiDAR point cloud datasets with point-level labels requires a
significant amount of manual annotation. This jeopardizes the efficient
development of supervised deep learning algorithms which are often data-hungry.
We present a framework to rapidly create point clouds with accurate point-level
labels from a computer game. The framework supports data collection from both
auto-driving scenes and user-configured scenes. Point clouds from auto-driving
scenes can be used as training data for deep learning algorithms, while point
clouds from user-configured scenes can be used to systematically test the
vulnerability of a neural network, and use the falsifying examples to make the
neural network more robust through retraining. In addition, the scene images
can be captured simultaneously in order for sensor fusion tasks, with a method
proposed to do automatic calibration between the point clouds and captured
scene images. We show a significant improvement in accuracy (+9%) in point
cloud segmentation by augmenting the training dataset with the generated
synthesized data. Our experiments also show by testing and retraining the
network using point clouds from user-configured scenes, the weakness/blind
spots of the neural network can be fixed
Deep reinforcement learning from human preferences
For sophisticated reinforcement learning (RL) systems to interact usefully
with real-world environments, we need to communicate complex goals to these
systems. In this work, we explore goals defined in terms of (non-expert) human
preferences between pairs of trajectory segments. We show that this approach
can effectively solve complex RL tasks without access to the reward function,
including Atari games and simulated robot locomotion, while providing feedback
on less than one percent of our agent's interactions with the environment. This
reduces the cost of human oversight far enough that it can be practically
applied to state-of-the-art RL systems. To demonstrate the flexibility of our
approach, we show that we can successfully train complex novel behaviors with
about an hour of human time. These behaviors and environments are considerably
more complex than any that have been previously learned from human feedback
Using motivation derived from computer gaming in the context of computer based instruction
This paper was originally presented at the IEEE Technically Sponsored SAI Computing Conference 2016, London, 13-15 July 2016. Abstractā this paper explores how to exploit game based motivation as a way to promote engagement in computer-based instruction, and in particular in online learning interaction. The paper explores the human psychology of gaming and how this can be applied to learning, the computer mechanics of media presentation, affordances and possibilities, and the emerging interaction of playing games and how this itself can provide a pedagogical scaffolding to learning. In doing so the paper focuses on four aspects of Game Based Motivation and how it may be used; (i) the game playerās perception; (ii) the game designersā model of how to motivate; (iii) team aspects and social interaction as a motivating factor; (iv) psychological models of motivation. This includes the increasing social nature of computer interaction. The paper concludes with a manifesto for exploiting game based motivation in learning

Explore, Exploit or Listen: Combining Human Feedback and Policy Model to Speed up Deep Reinforcement Learning in 3D Worlds
We describe a method to use discrete human feedback to enhance the
performance of deep learning agents in virtual three-dimensional environments
by extending deep-reinforcement learning to model the confidence and
consistency of human feedback. This enables deep reinforcement learning
algorithms to determine the most appropriate time to listen to the human
feedback, exploit the current policy model, or explore the agent's environment.
Managing the trade-off between these three strategies allows DRL agents to be
robust to inconsistent or intermittent human feedback. Through experimentation
using a synthetic oracle, we show that our technique improves the training
speed and overall performance of deep reinforcement learning in navigating
three-dimensional environments using Minecraft. We further show that our
technique is robust to highly innacurate human feedback and can also operate
when no human feedback is given
Developing serious games for cultural heritage: a state-of-the-art review
Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result, the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented
Player agency in interactive narrative: audience, actor & author
The question motivating this review paper is, how can
computer-based interactive narrative be used as a constructivist learn-
ing activity? The paper proposes that player agency can be used to
link interactive narrative to learner agency in constructivist theory,
and to classify approaches to interactive narrative. The traditional
question driving research in interactive narrative is, āhow can an in-
teractive narrative deal with a high degree of player agency, while
maintaining a coherent and well-formed narrative?ā This question
derives from an Aristotelian approach to interactive narrative that,
as the question shows, is inherently antagonistic to player agency.
Within this approach, player agency must be restricted and manip-
ulated to maintain the narrative. Two alternative approaches based
on Brechtās Epic Theatre and Boalās Theatre of the Oppressed are
reviewed. If a Boalian approach to interactive narrative is taken the
conflict between narrative and player agency dissolves. The question
that emerges from this approach is quite different from the traditional
question above, and presents a more useful approach to applying in-
teractive narrative as a constructivist learning activity
