Coalescence of the Fermi-surface-related diffuse intensity peaks in disordered alloys
The possibility of disappearance of the diffuse-intensity peak splitting
induced by the Fermi surface (i.e., of coalescence of the intensity maxima)
with decreasing temperature is predicted. The underlying mechanism is the
compensation of the reciprocal-space curvatures of the self-energy and the
interaction. The theory also describes similar results obtained earlier for two
low-dimensional models with competing interactions. The coalescence is compared
with the recently observed "thermal" splitting in Pt-V which can be explained
in the same way.Comment: 6 pages, 3 EPS figures, RevTeX, submitted to Philosophical Magazine

Authenticity in the Skateboarding World
The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate the values and norms that constitute legitimacy, or authenticity, in the skateboarding world. Both authors spent a considerable amount of time with the skateboarding world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Lisa Weidman worked at a skateboarding magazine for several years, and Becky Beal did an extensive ethnographic study of skateboarders. Using our experiences and research, we describe the characteristics that skateboarders and the industry use to identify an authentic skateboarder. The first section, on the skaters\u27 perspective, is based primarily on Beal\u27s interactions with skateboarders; the second section, on the industry\u27s perspective, is based on Weidman\u27s experiences and interpretations of advertisements placed in the skateboarding magazines by companies selling skateboards and related products and services
Interactions in the text: becoming a woman in 1970s teen magazines
This paper uses a case study from 1970s girls’ magazine Honey to demonstrate how paying attention to reader contributions published in magazines can give a richer, more nuanced view of the relationship between magazine and reader. The case study, a debate on why women assume they will have children, offers a new understanding of the way that these interactions in the text contributed to the development of young women’s understanding of the increasing freedoms available to them in the 1970s
