    Assessment of a human computer interface prototyping environment

    A Human Computer Interface (HCI) prototyping environment with embedded evaluation capability has been successfully assessed which will be valuable in developing and refining HCI standards and evaluating program/project interface development, especially Space Station Freedom on-board displays for payload operations. The HCI prototyping environment is designed to include four components: (1) a HCI format development tool, (2) a test and evaluation simulator development tool, (3) a dynamic, interactive interface between the HCI prototype and simulator, and (4) an embedded evaluation capability to evaluate the adequacy of an HCI based on a user's performance

    Improving Human-Machine Interaction

    This thesis studies human and machine interaction. For better interaction between humans and machines, this thesis aims to address three issues that remain unanswered in literature. Three objectives are proposed in this thesis to address the three issues, and the objectives are: (i) identification of the core capabilities of a Human Assistance System (HAS) and study of implementation strategy of the core capabilities; (ii) development of a framework for improving the accuracy of human mind state inference; (iii) study of the effect of representation of the machine’s state (which is represented in a “natural” way) on the user’s actions. By a natural way, it is meant a way that contains emotions known to be always present in humans (or human emotions in short). The study includes theoretical development, experimentation, and prototype implementation. This thesis has concluded: (1) the core capabilities to be addressed in designing a HAS are transparency, communication, rationale, cognition and task-sharing and they can be implemented with the existing technologies including fuzzy logics, Petri Net and ACT-R (Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational); (2) expert opinion elicitation technique is a promising method to construct a more general framework for integrating various algorithms on human state inference; (3) there is a significant effect of the representation of the machine’s state on the user’s actions. The main contributions of this thesis are: (1) provision of a case study for the proof-of-concept of HAS in the area of Computer Aided Design (CAD); (2) provision of an integrated framework for fatigue inference for improved accuracy, being readily generalized to inference of other mind states; (3) generation of a new knowledge regarding the effect of the natural representation of a machine’s states on the user’s actions. These contributions are significant in human-machine science and technology. The first contribution may lead to the development of a new generation CAD system in the near future. The second contribution provides a much powerful technology for human mind inference, which is a key capability in HAS, and the third contribution enriches the science of human-machine interaction and will give impact to the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as well.     Autonomic Protocol-based Coordination in Dynamic Inter-Organizational Workflow

    International audienceGiven the maturity of Internet standards, inter-organizational workflow is expected to be deployed in environments that are more dynamic and open than before. This paper addresses Inter Organizational Workflow (IOW) coordination in such a context, mainly investigating autonomic coordination managed at run-time. It is based on the idea that an agent-based approach is suitable to deal with this issue. More precisely, this paper introduces a framework for dynamic IOW in which involved processes are encapsulated into agents, called Process Agents (PA) in order to give them the capability to autonomously decide with whom, when and how to cooperate, and in which involved processes can access protocol components for their coordination needs. Our approach is based on the capability of PAs in playing different coordination protocols in order to take part in new business opportunities. This solution has numerous advantages. First, it provides extendable and reusable coordination components. Then, it supports run-time protocol integration. Finally, it eases openness since it imposes very few constraints

    NOVA mobility assistive system: Developed and remotely controlled with IOPT-tools

    UID/EEA/00066/2020In this paper, a Mobility Assistive System (NOVA-MAS) and a model-driven development approach are proposed to support the acquisition and analysis of data, infrastructures control, and dissemination of information along public roads. A literature review showed that the work related to mobility assistance of pedestrians in wheelchairs has a gap in ensuring their safety on road. The problem is that pedestrians in wheelchairs and scooters often do not enjoy adequate and safe lanes for their circulation on public roads, having to travel sometimes side by side with vehicles and cars moving at high speed. With NOVA-MAS, city infrastructures can obtain information regarding the environment and provide it to their users/vehicles, increasing road safety in an inclusive way, contributing to the decrease of the accidents of pedestrians in wheelchairs. NOVA-MAS not only supports information dissemination, but also data acquisition from sensors and infrastructures control, such as traffic light signs. For that, it proposed a development approach that supports the acquisition of data from the environment and its control while using a tool framework, named IOPT-Tools (Input-Output Place-Transition Tools). IOPT-Tools support controllers’ specification, validation, and implementation, with remote operation capabilities. The infrastructures’ controllers are specified through IOPT Petri net models, which are then simulated using computational tools and verified using state-space-based model-checking tools. In addition, an automatic code generator tool generates the C code, which supports the controllers’ implementation, avoiding manual codification errors. The core consists in adopting the human cognitive framework for vehicles, following an artificial intelligent approach to take decisions.     A case study from on-road load handling

    This thesis is a research exploration into the commercial viability of advanced driver assistance services in the load handling industry, which eventually enable automation and autonomous activity. Commercial viability is important for understanding the rate of change as well as the capability for digital transformation in the industry. Ongoing trends support the addition of technology onto hardware; this research seeks to understand whether this is commercially viable. A case study method is used to deep-dive into the practicality from on-road load handling and the construction of advanced driver assistance services through the installation of software systems and external hardware. The case study company is a large original equipment manufacturer in the industry. A design science methodology is constructed and used, with the case study providing a research artifact for exploration. Main results conclude that technology costs are greater than the monetary value created for customers, stating that in the short-term advanced driver assistance services are not commercially viable. However, trends such as urbanization, digitalization and the declining skills of drivers in the load handling industry support the long-term vision of automation and autonomous activity; in addition, there is a strong demand pull from the customers for increased automation, which also support the construction of driver assistance services

    Modeling and Simulation of Lane Keeping Support System Using Hybrid Petri Nets

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)In the past decades, the rapid innovation of technology has greatly affected the automotive industry. However, every innovation has always been paired with safety risks that needs to be quickly addressed. This is where Petri nets (PNs) have come into the picture and have been used to model complex systems for different purposes, such as production management, traffic flow estimation and the introduction of new car features collectively known as, Adaptive Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Since most of these systems include both discrete and continuous dynamics, the Hybrid Petri net (HPN) model is an essential tool to model these. The objective of this thesis is to develop, analyze and simulate a lane keeping support system using an HPN model. Chapter 1 includes a brief summary of the specific ADAS used, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist systems and then related work on PNs is mentioned. Chapter 2 provides a background on Petri nets. In chapter 3, we develop a discrete PN model first, then we integrate continuous dynamics to extend it to a HPN model that combines the functionalities of the two independent ADAS systems. Several scenarios are introduced to explain the expected model behavior. Chapter 4 presents the analysis and simulation results obtained on the final model. Chapter 5 provides a summary for the work done and discusses future work
