Olfaction-enhanced multimedia: Perspectives and challenges

Enhancing such applications with olfactory stimuli has the potential to create a more complex—and richer—user multimedia experience, by heightening the sense of reality and diversifying user interaction modalities. Nonetheless, olfaction-enhanced multimedia still remains a challenging research area. More recently, however, there have been initial signs of olfactory-enhanced applications in multimedia, with olfaction being used towards a variety of goals, including notification alerts, enhancing the sense of reality in immersive applications, and branding, to name but a few. However, as the goal of a multimedia application is to inform and/or entertain users, achieving quality olfaction-enhanced multimedia applications from the users’ perspective is vital to the success and continuity of these applications. Accordingly, in this paper we have focused on investigating the user perceived experience of olfaction-enhanced multimedia applications, with the aim of discovering the quality evaluation factors that are important from a user’s perspective of these applications, and consequently ensure the continued advancement and success of olfaction-enhanced multimedia applications
MERIC and RADAR generator: tools for energy evaluation and runtime tuning of HPC applications
This paper introduces two tools for manual energy evaluation and runtime tuning developed at IT4Innovations in the READEX project. The MERIC library can be used for manual instrumentation and analysis of any application from the energy and time consumption point of view. Besides tracing, MERIC can also change environment and hardware parameters during the application runtime, which leads to energy savings.
MERIC stores large amounts of data, which are difficult to read by a human. The RADAR generator analyses the MERIC output files to find the best settings of evaluated parameters for each instrumented region. It generates a Open image in new window report and a MERIC configuration file for application production runs
Robust semi-automated path extraction for visualising stenosis of the coronary arteries
Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is useful for diagnosing and planning treatment of heart disease. However, contrast agent in surrounding structures (such as the aorta and left ventricle) makes 3-D visualisation of the coronary arteries difficult. This paper presents a composite method employing segmentation and volume rendering to overcome this issue. A key contribution is a novel Fast Marching minimal path cost function for vessel centreline extraction. The resultant centreline is used to compute a measure of vessel lumen, which indicates the degree of stenosis (narrowing of a vessel). Two volume visualisation techniques are presented which utilise the segmented arteries and lumen measure. The system is evaluated and demonstrated using synthetic and clinically obtained datasets
