Human-centred design methods : developing scenarios for robot assisted play informed by user panels and field trials

    Get PDF
Original article can be found at: http://www.sciencedirect.com/ Copyright ElsevierThis article describes the user-centred development of play scenarios for robot assisted play, as part of the multidisciplinary IROMEC1 project that develops a novel robotic toy for children with special needs. The project investigates how robotic toys can become social mediators, encouraging children with special needs to discover a range of play styles, from solitary to collaborative play (with peers, carers/teachers, parents, etc.). This article explains the developmental process of constructing relevant play scenarios for children with different special needs. Results are presented from consultation with panel of experts (therapists, teachers, parents) who advised on the play needs for the various target user groups and who helped investigate how robotic toys could be used as a play tool to assist in the children’s development. Examples from experimental investigations are provided which have informed the development of scenarios throughout the design process. We conclude by pointing out the potential benefit of this work to a variety of research projects and applications involving human–robot interactions.Peer reviewe

Behavior-Based Power Management in Autonomous Mobile Robots

    Get PDF
Current attempts to prolong the life of a robot on a single battery charge focus on lowering the operating frequency of the onboard hardware, or allowing devices to go to sleep during idle states. These techniques have much overhead and do not come built in to the underlying robotic architecture. In this thesis, battery life is greatly extended through development of a behavior-based power management system, including a Markov decision process power planner, thereby allowing future robots increased time to operate and loiter in their required domain. Behavior-based power management examines sensors needed by the currently active behavior set and powers down sensors not required. Additionally, predictive power planning is made possible through modeling the domain as a Markov decision process in the Deliberator. The planner creates a power policy that accounts for current and future power requirements in stochastic domains. This provides the identification of the ability to use lower-power consuming devices at the start of a goal sequence in order to save power for the areas where higher-power consuming sensors might be needed. Power savings are observed through four simulated robots—no power management, lenient power management, strict power management, and predictive power management—in two case studies: 1) Low sensor intensity environment where robots wander randomly while avoiding obstacles and 2) High sensor intensity environment where robots are required to execute a series of tasks. Testing reveals that in a real life scenario involving multiple goals with multiple sensors, the robot’s battery charge can be extended up to 96% longer when using behavior-based power management with predictive power planning over robots that only rely on traditional power management

Advanced Bionic Attachment Equipment Inspired by the Attachment Performance of Aquatic Organisms: A Review

    Get PDF
In nature, aquatic organisms have evolved various attachment systems, and their attachment ability has become a specific and mysterious survival skill for them. Therefore, it is significant to study and use their unique attachment surfaces and outstanding attachment characteristics for reference and develop new attachment equipment with excellent performance. Based on this, in this review, the unique non-smooth surface morphologies of their suction cups are classified and the key roles of these special surface morphologies in the attachment process are introduced in detail. The recent research on the attachment capacity of aquatic suction cups and other related attachment studies are described. Emphatically, the research progress of advanced bionic attachment equipment and technology in recent years, including attachment robots, flexible grasping manipulators, suction cup accessories, micro-suction cup patches, etc., is summarized. Finally, the existing problems and challenges in the field of biomimetic attachment are analyzed, and the focus and direction of biomimetic attachment research in the future are pointed out

Machine Learning Technologies and Their Applications for Science and Engineering Domains Workshop -- Summary Report

The fields of machine learning and big data analytics have made significant advances in recent years, which has created an environment where cross-fertilization of methods and collaborations can achieve previously unattainable outcomes. The Comprehensive Digital Transformation (CDT) Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics team planned a workshop at NASA Langley in August 2016 to unite leading experts the field of machine learning and NASA scientists and engineers. The primary goal for this workshop was to assess the state-of-the-art in this field, introduce these leading experts to the aerospace and science subject matter experts, and develop opportunities for collaboration. The workshop was held over a three day-period with lectures from 15 leading experts followed by significant interactive discussions. This report provides an overview of the 15 invited lectures and a summary of the key discussion topics that arose during both formal and informal discussion sections. Four key workshop themes were identified after the closure of the workshop and are also highlighted in the report. Furthermore, several workshop attendees provided their feedback on how they are already utilizing machine learning algorithms to advance their research, new methods they learned about during the workshop, and collaboration opportunities they identified during the workshop

New trends in 4D printing: A critical review

    Get PDF
In a variety of industries, Additive Manufacturing has revolutionized the whole design-fabrication cycle. Traditional 3D printing is typically employed to produce static components, which are not able to fulfill the dynamic structures requirements and relevant applications such as soft grippers, self-assembly systems, and smart actuators. To address this limitation, an innovative technology has emerged and is called “4D printing”. It processes smart materials by using 3D printing for fabricating smart structures that can be reconfigured by applying different inputs such as heat, humidity, magnetic, electricity, light etc. At present, 4D printing is still a growing technology and it presents numerous challenges regarding materials, design, simulation, fabrication processes, applied strategies and reversibility. In this work a critical review about 4D printing technologies, materials and applications is discussed
