ADO-Tutor: Intelligent Tutoring System for leaning ADO.NET
This paper describes an Intelligent Tutoring System for helping users with ADO.NET called ADO-Tutor. The Intelligent Tutoring System was designed and developed using (ITSB) authoring tool for building intelligent educational systems. The user learns through the intelligent tutoring system ADO.NET, the technology used by Microsoft.NET to connect to databases. The material includes lessons, examples, and questions. Through the feedback provided by the intelligent tutoring system, the user's understanding of the material is assessed, and accordingly can be guided to different difficulty level of exercises and/or the lessons. The Intelligent Tutoring System was evaluated by a group of users and the results were more than satisfactory in terms of the quality of the material and the design of the system

Advances in food safety have yielded promising results leading to the development of intelligent packaging (IP). By these containers, it is possible to monitor and provide information of the condition of food, packaging, or the environment. This article describes the role of the different concepts of intelligent packaging. On environments as systemic exoskeletons: Crosscutting optimizers and antifragility enablers
Classic approaches to General Systems Theory often adopt an individual
perspective and a limited number of systemic classes. As a result, those
classes include a wide number and variety of systems that result equivalent to
each other. This paper introduces a different approach: First, systems
belonging to a same class are further differentiated according to five major
general characteristics. This introduces a "horizontal dimension" to system
classification. A second component of our approach considers systems as nested
compositional hierarchies of other sub-systems. The resulting "vertical
dimension" further specializes the systemic classes and makes it easier to
assess similarities and differences regarding properties such as resilience,
performance, and quality-of-experience. Our approach is exemplified by
considering a telemonitoring system designed in the framework of Flemish
project "Little Sister". We show how our approach makes it possible to design
intelligent environments able to closely follow a system's horizontal and
vertical organization and to artificially augment its features by serving as
crosscutting optimizers and as enablers of antifragile behaviors.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Reliable Intelligent

Control charts for the on-line diagnostics of CMM performance
The quality of a production process is increasing its dependence on both the manufacturing technology, and the production control. In most applications controls are operated by relying on intelligent instrumentation to 'automatically' perform the programmed checks. However, the performance systems that verify the product's quality can deteriorate, as can the production process. This paper presents a method for the on-line verification of the performance of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) using statistically based control charts. The method is automated and performed on-line during a normal measurement cycle. Some experimental results are then presented and discussed
Intelligent Modeling Approach to Predict Effluent Quality of Wastewater Treatment Process
Monitoring of effluent quality remains a challenge to the wastewater treatment process (WWTP). In order to provide a reliable tool for the online monitoring of effluent quality, an intelligent modeling approach, which consists of online sensors and an effluent quality predicting plant, is developed to predict effluent quality in this chapter. The intelligent modeling approach, based on a self-organizing fuzzy neural network (SOFNN), is able to enhance the modeling performance by organizing the structure and adjusting the parameters simultaneously. The experimental studies of intelligent modeling approach have been performed on several systems to verify the effectiveness. The comparison with other existing methods has been made and demonstrated that the intelligent modeling approach is of better performance
Software Reliability in Semantic Web Service Composition Applications
Web Service Composition allows the development of easily reconfigurable applications that can be quickly adapted to business changes. Due to the shift in paradigm from traditional systems, new approaches are needed in order to evaluate the reliability of web service composition applications. In this paper we present an approach based on intelligent agents for semiautomatic composition as well as methods for assessing reliability. Abstract web services, corresponding to a group of services that accomplishes a specific functionality are used as a mean of assuring better system reliability. Acquiring and Using Limited User Models in NLG
It is a truism of NLG that good knowledge of the reader can improve the quality of generated texts, and many NLG systems have been developed that exploit detailed user models when generating texts. Unfortunately, it is very difficult in practice to obtain detailed information about users. In this paper we describe our experiences in acquiring and using limited user models for NLG in four different systems, each of which took a different approach to this issue. One general conclusion is that it is useful if imperfect user models are understandable to users or domain experts, and indeed perhaps can be directly edited by them; this agrees with recent thinking about user models in other applications such as intelligent tutoring systems (Kay, 2001)
