    Internal combustion engine sensor network analysis using graph modeling

    In recent years there has been a rapid development in technologies for smart monitoring applied to many different areas (e.g. building automation, photovoltaic systems, etc.). An intelligent monitoring system employs multiple sensors distributed within a network to extract useful information for decision-making. The management and the analysis of the raw data derived from the sensor network includes a number of specific challenges still unresolved, related to the different communication standards, the heterogeneous structure and the huge volume of data. In this paper we propose to apply a method based on complex network theory, to evaluate the performance of an Internal Combustion Engine. Data are gathered from the OBD sensor subset and from the emission analyzer. The method provides for the graph modeling of the sensor network, where the nodes are represented by the sensors and the edge are evaluated with non-linear statistical correlation functions applied to the time series pairs. The resulting functional graph is then analyzed with the topological metrics of the network, to define characteristic proprieties representing useful indicator for the maintenance and diagnosis

    On the role of Prognostics and Health Management in advanced maintenance systems

    The advanced use of the Information and Communication Technologies is evolving the way that systems are managed and maintained. A great number of techniques and methods have emerged in the light of these advances allowing to have an accurate and knowledge about the systems’ condition evolution and remaining useful life. The advances are recognized as outcomes of an innovative discipline, nowadays discussed under the term of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). In order to analyze how maintenance will change by using PHM, a conceptual model is proposed built upon three views. The model highlights: (i) how PHM may impact the definition of maintenance policies; (ii) how PHM fits within the Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and (iii) how PHM can be integrated into Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) programs.     Machine prognostics based on health state estimation using SVM

    The ability to accurately predict the remaining useful life of machine components is critical for continuous operations in machines which can also improve productivity and enhance system safety. In condition-based maintenance (CBM), effective diagnostics and prognostics are important aspects of CBM which provide sufficient time for maintenance engineers to schedule a repair and acquire replacement components before the components finally fail. All machine components have certain characteristics of failure patterns and are subjected to degradation processes in real environments. This paper describes a technique for accurate assessment of the remnant life of machines based on prior expert knowledge embedded in closed loop prognostics systems. The technique uses Support Vector Machines (SVM) for classification of faults and evaluation of health for six stages of bearing degradation. To validate the feasibility of the proposed model, several fault historical data from High Pressure Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) pumps were analysed to obtain their failure patterns. The results obtained were very encouraging and the prediction closely matched the real life particularly at the end of term of the bearings

    How to Commission, Operate and Maintain a Large Future Accelerator Complex from Far Remote

    A study on future large accelerators [1] has considered a facility, which is designed, built and operated by a worldwide collaboration of equal partner institutions, and which is remote from most of these institutions. The full range of operation was considered including commi-ssioning, machine development, maintenance, trouble shooting and repair. Experience from existing accele-rators confirms that most of these activities are already performed 'remotely'. The large high-energy physics ex-periments and astronomy projects, already involve inter-national collaborations of distant institutions. Based on this experience, the prospects for a machine operated remotely from far sites are encouraging. Experts from each laboratory would remain at their home institution but continue to participate in the operation of the machine after construction. Experts are required to be on site only during initial commissioning and for par-ticularly difficult problems. Repairs require an on-site non-expert maintenance crew. Most of the interventions can be made without an expert and many of the rest resolved with remote assistance. There appears to be no technical obstacle to controlling an accelerator from a distance.
