    OBPF: Opportunistic Beaconless Packet Forwarding Strategy for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

    [EN] In a vehicular ad hoc network, the communication links are unsteady due to the rapidly changing topology, high mobility and traffic density in the urban environment. Most of the existing geographical routing protocols rely on the continuous transmission of beacon messages to update the neighbors' presence, leading to network congestion. Source-based approaches have been proven to be inefficient in the inherently unstable network. To this end, we propose an opportunistic beaconless packet forwarding approach based on a modified handshake mechanism for the urban vehicular environment. The protocol acts differently between intersections and at the intersection to find the next forwarder node toward the destination. The modified handshake mechanism contains link quality, forward progress and directional greedy metrics to determine the best relay node in the network. After designing the protocol, we compared its performance with existing routing protocols. The simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed protocol in terms of packet delay and data delivery ratio in realistic wireless channel conditions.The authors would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Deanship of Scientific Research at King Saud University for funding this research.     Geographical Forwarding Methods in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks

    Vehicular ad hoc networks are new and emerging technology and special class of mobile ad hoc networks that provide wireless communication between vehicles without any fixed infrastructure. Geographical routing has appeared as one of the most scalable and competent routing schemes for vehicular networks. A number of strategies have been proposed for forwarding the packets in geographical direction of the destination, where information of direct neighbors is gained through navigational services. Due to dynamically changing topologies and high mobility neighbor information become outdated. To address these common issues in network different types of forwarding strategies have been proposed.     Routing Protocols in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks: Survey and Research Challenges

    A Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a type of wireless ad hoc network that facilitates ubiquitous connectivity between vehicles in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Mul ti-hop routing and beaconing approaches are two important research challenges in high mobility vehicular networks. Routing protocols are divided into two categories of topology-based and position-based routing protocols. In this article, we perform a comparative study among the existing routing solutions, which explores the main advantages and drawbacks behind their design. After implementing the representatives of geographical and topology routing protocols, we analyze the simulation results and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these routing protocols with regard to their suitability to vehicular networks.     A Redundancy based Protocol for Safety Message Dissemination in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

    International audienceThe diversity of applications types in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) has spawned a large variety of messages that need to be disseminated in vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication mode. The most critical messages are those dedicated for safety applications such as accident warning, road hazardous warning, signal violation warning, etc. The dissemination of this sort of messages is a challenging task in VANETs since they should be efficiently transmitted i.e. by achieving high packet delivery within a certain time limit and an acceptable overhead. In this work, we propose a robust and an original data dissemination protocol called Redundancy-based Protocol (RBP). Contrary to most of the density based protocols, the protocol is beaconless. It takes into account the surrounding vehicle density during the broadcasting process through a specific metric, named “packet redundancy ratio”, calculated locally at each vehicle. Based on this metric, each vehicle is able to dynamically determine the probability of rebroadcast in order to mitigate the broadcast storm problem. The simulation results prove that the proposed protocol outperforms the slotted 1- persistence scheme in terms of packet drop ratio, and network load while still maintaining a low End-to-End delay and high packet reachability. This scheme is suitable for safety applications, as well as for further kinds of application by saving the network capacity consumption

    Interference-aware multipath video streaming in vehicular environments

    The multipath transmission is one of the suitable transmission methods for high data rate oriented communication such as video streaming. Each video packets are split into smaller frames for parallel transmission via different paths. One path may interfere with another path due to these parallel transmissions. The multipath oriented interference is due to the route coupling which is one of the major challenges in vehicular traffic environments. The route coupling increases channel contention resulting in video packet collision. In this context, this paper proposes an Interference-aware Multipath Video Streaming (I-MVS) framework focusing on link and node disjoint optimal paths. Specifically, a multipath vehicular network model is derived. The model is utilized to develop interference-aware video streaming method considering angular driving statistics of vehicles. The quality of video streaming links is measured based on packet error rate considering non-circular transmission range oriented shadowing effects. Algorithms are developed as a complete operational I-MVS framework. The comparative performance evaluation attests the benefit of the proposed framework considering various video streaming related metrics

    Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is an emerging area of wireless ad hoc networks that facilitates ubiquitous connectivity between smart vehicles through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) or Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) and Roadside-to- Vehicle (R2V) communications. This emerging field of technology aims to improve safety of passengers and traffic flow, reduces pollution to the environment and enables in-vehicle entertainment applications. The safety-related applications could reduce accidents by providing drivers with traffic information such as collision avoidances, traffic flow alarms and road surface conditions.
