Complete Semantics to empower Touristic Service Providers
The tourism industry has a significant impact on the world's economy,
contributes 10.2% of the world's gross domestic product in 2016. It becomes a
very competitive industry, where having a strong online presence is an
essential aspect for business success. To achieve this goal, the proper usage
of latest Web technologies, particularly schema.org annotations is crucial. In
this paper, we present our effort to improve the online visibility of touristic
service providers in the region of Tyrol, Austria, by creating and deploying a
substantial amount of semantic annotations according to schema.org, a widely
used vocabulary for structured data on the Web. We started our work from
Tourismusverband (TVB) Mayrhofen-Hippach and all touristic service providers in
the Mayrhofen-Hippach region and applied the same approach to other TVBs and
regions, as well as other use cases. The rationale for doing this is
straightforward. Having schema.org annotations enables search engines to
understand the content better, and provide better results for end users, as
well as enables various intelligent applications to utilize them. As a direct
consequence, the region of Tyrol and its touristic service increase their
online visibility and decrease the dependency on intermediaries, i.e. Online

The FĂschlár-News-Stories system: personalised access to an archive of TV news
The “FĂschlár” systems are a family of tools for capturing, analysis, indexing, browsing, searching and summarisation of digital video information. FĂschlár-News-Stories, described in this paper, is one of those systems, and provides access to a growing archive of broadcast TV news. FĂschlár-News-Stories has several notable features including the fact that it automatically records TV news and segments a broadcast news program into stories, eliminating advertisements and credits at the start/end of the broadcast. FĂschlár-News-Stories supports access to individual stories via calendar lookup, text search through closed captions, automatically-generated links between related stories, and personalised access using a personalisation and recommender system based on collaborative filtering. Access to individual news stories is supported either by browsing keyframes with synchronised closed captions, or by playback of the recorded video. One strength of the FĂschlár-News-Stories system is that it is actually used, in practice, daily, to access news. Several aspects of the FĂschlár systems have been published before, bit in this paper we give a summary of the FĂschlár-News-Stories system in operation by following a scenario in which it is used and also outlining how the underlying system realises the functions it offers
Math Search for the Masses: Multimodal Search Interfaces and Appearance-Based Retrieval
We summarize math search engines and search interfaces produced by the
Document and Pattern Recognition Lab in recent years, and in particular the min
math search interface and the Tangent search engine. Source code for both
systems are publicly available. "The Masses" refers to our emphasis on creating
systems for mathematical non-experts, who may be looking to define unfamiliar
notation, or browse documents based on the visual appearance of formulae rather
than their mathematical semantics.Comment: Paper for Invited Talk at 2015 Conference on Intelligent Computer

Modelling data intensive web sites with OntoWeaver
This paper illustrates the OntoWeaver modelling approach, which relies on a set of comprehensive site ontologies to model all aspects of data intensive web sites and thus offers high level support for the design and development of data-intensive web sites. In particular, the OntoWeaver site
ontologies comprise two components: a site view ontology and a presentation ontology. The site view ontology provides meta-models to allow for the composition of sophisticated site views, which allow end users to navigate and manipulate the underlying domain databases. The presentation ontology abstracts the look and feel for site views and makes it possible for the visual appearance and layout to be specified at a high level of abstractio
