Intelligent Escape of Robotic Systems: A Survey of Methodologies, Applications, and Challenges
Intelligent escape is an interdisciplinary field that employs artificial
intelligence (AI) techniques to enable robots with the capacity to
intelligently react to potential dangers in dynamic, intricate, and
unpredictable scenarios. As the emphasis on safety becomes increasingly
paramount and advancements in robotic technologies continue to advance, a wide
range of intelligent escape methodologies has been developed in recent years.
This paper presents a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research work on
intelligent escape of robotic systems. Four main methods of intelligent escape
are reviewed, including planning-based methodologies, partitioning-based
methodologies, learning-based methodologies, and bio-inspired methodologies.
The strengths and limitations of existing methods are summarized. In addition,
potential applications of intelligent escape are discussed in various domains,
such as search and rescue, evacuation, military security, and healthcare. In an
effort to develop new approaches to intelligent escape, this survey identifies
current research challenges and provides insights into future research trends
in intelligent escape.Comment: This paper is accepted by Journal of Intelligent and Robotic System

The focus is set on the coordinated movements of the robotic arm and the anthropomorphic mechanical hand, with which the arm is equipped. For this, human movements performing different grasps are captured and mapped to the robot in order to compute the human hand synergies. These synergies are used to reduce the complexity of the planning phase by reducing the dimension of the search space. In addition, the paper proposes a sampling-based planner, which guides the motion planning ollowing the synergies. The introduced approach is tested in an application example and thoroughly compared with other state-of-the-art planning algorithms, obtaining better results.Peer ReviewedAward-winningPostprint (author's final draft
The real-time learning mechanism of the Scientific Research Associates Advanced Robotic System (SRAARS)
Scientific research associates advanced robotic system (SRAARS) is an intelligent robotic system which has autonomous learning capability in geometric reasoning. The system is equipped with one global intelligence center (GIC) and eight local intelligence centers (LICs). It controls mainly sixteen links with fourteen active joints, which constitute two articulated arms, an extensible lower body, a vision system with two CCD cameras and a mobile base. The on-board knowledge-based system supports the learning controller with model representations of both the robot and the working environment. By consecutive verifying and planning procedures, hypothesis-and-test routines and learning-by-analogy paradigm, the system would autonomously build up its own understanding of the relationship between itself (i.e., the robot) and the focused environment for the purposes of collision avoidance, motion analysis and object manipulation. The intelligence of SRAARS presents a valuable technical advantage to implement robotic systems for space exploration and space station operations
Robotic Navigation Autonomy for Subretinal Injection via Intelligent Real-Time Virtual iOCT Volume Slicing
In the last decade, various robotic platforms have been introduced that could
support delicate retinal surgeries. Concurrently, to provide semantic
understanding of the surgical area, recent advances have enabled
microscope-integrated intraoperative Optical Coherent Tomography (iOCT) with
high-resolution 3D imaging at near video rate. The combination of robotics and
semantic understanding enables task autonomy in robotic retinal surgery, such
as for subretinal injection. This procedure requires precise needle insertion
for best treatment outcomes. However, merging robotic systems with iOCT
introduces new challenges. These include, but are not limited to high demands
on data processing rates and dynamic registration of these systems during the
procedure. In this work, we propose a framework for autonomous robotic
navigation for subretinal injection, based on intelligent real-time processing
of iOCT volumes. Our method consists of an instrument pose estimation method,
an online registration between the robotic and the iOCT system, and trajectory
planning tailored for navigation to an injection target. We also introduce
intelligent virtual B-scans, a volume slicing approach for rapid instrument
pose estimation, which is enabled by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Our
experiments on ex-vivo porcine eyes demonstrate the precision and repeatability
of the method. Finally, we discuss identified challenges in this work and
suggest potential solutions to further the development of such systems
On the Integration of Adaptive and Interactive Robotic Smart Spaces

(CC BY-NC-ND 3.0)Enabling robots to seamlessly operate as part of smart spaces is an important and extended challenge for robotics R&D and a key enabler for a range of advanced robotic applications, such as AmbientAssisted Living (AAL) and home automation. The integration of these technologies is currently being pursued from two largely distinct view-points: On the one hand, people-centred initiatives focus on improving the userâs acceptance by tackling human-robot interaction (HRI) issues, often adopting a social robotic approach, and by giving to the designer and - in a limited degree â to the final user(s), control on personalization and product customisation features. On the other hand, technologically-driven initiatives are building impersonal but intelligent systems that are able to pro-actively and autonomously adapt their operations to fit changing requirements and evolving usersâ needs, but which largely ignore and do not leverage human-robot interaction and may thus lead to poor user experience and user acceptance. In order to inform the development of a new generation of smart robotic spaces, this paper analyses and compares different research strands with a view to proposing possible integrated solutions with both advanced HRI and online adaptation capabilities.Peer reviewe
Internet of robotic things : converging sensing/actuating, hypoconnectivity, artificial intelligence and IoT Platforms
The Internet of Things (IoT) concept is evolving rapidly and influencing newdevelopments in various application domains, such as the Internet of MobileThings (IoMT), Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT), Autonomous Systemof Things (ASoT), Internet of Autonomous Things (IoAT), Internetof Things Clouds (IoT-C) and the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) etc.that are progressing/advancing by using IoT technology. The IoT influencerepresents new development and deployment challenges in different areassuch as seamless platform integration, context based cognitive network integration, new mobile sensor/actuator network paradigms, things identification(addressing, naming in IoT) and dynamic things discoverability and manyothers. The IoRT represents new convergence challenges and their need to be addressed, in one side the programmability and the communication ofmultiple heterogeneous mobile/autonomous/robotic things for cooperating, their coordination, configuration, exchange of information, security, safetyand protection. Developments in IoT heterogeneous parallel processing/communication and dynamic systems based on parallelism and concurrencyrequire new ideas for integrating the intelligent âdevicesâ, collaborativerobots (COBOTS), into IoT applications. Dynamic maintainability, selfhealing,self-repair of resources, changing resource state, (re-) configurationand context based IoT systems for service implementation and integrationwith IoT network service composition are of paramount importance whennew âcognitive devicesâ are becoming active participants in IoT applications. This chapter aims to be an overview of the IoRT concept, technologies, architectures and applications and to provide a comprehensive coverage offuture challenges, developments and applications
