Current home automation system merges a family\u27s lifestyle with the latest technology & energy management tools to simplify people\u27s lives. It allows users to easily manipulate a variety of home systems, including appliances, security systems, and environmental systems. Setting up a home automation system confuses many consumers. Multiple product lines and platforms make choosing the best system difficult. Basic requirements of setting up a home automation system and the comparison between different platforms are explained. An intelligent home automation system makes intelligent decisions to control a home. This type system might use a weather report to adjust a home\u27s lawn watering schedule, as well as adjust the thermostat for temperature control in the home. Traditional home automation systems require human decision making to control the home system. The future intelligent home will require less human interactions, that can do things automatically after it learns patterns from us. A new generation requires more developed AI to control the smart home automation. Based on the technology we have now, the possible consumer-oriented AI technology is predicted in this paper. When the market is growing rapidly, companies are supposed to have better opportunities to make money. Due to the increasing popularity of home automation systems, the competition is very intense. Companies try the best to take the first mover advantage. Three suggestions are made to help those companies to build their strategies

A multi-agent intelligent decision making support system for home energy management in smart grid: A fuzzy TOPSIS approach

In the context of intelligent home energy management in smart grid, the occupants' consumption behavior has a direct effect on the demand and supply of the electrical energy market. Correspondingly, the policies of the utility providers affect consumption behavior so techniques and tools are required to analyse the occupants' preferences, habits and lifestyles in order to support and facilitate their decision-making regarding the curtailing of their energy consumption and costs. The uncertainty about householders' preferences increases the uncertainty of appliance prioritization and makes it difficult to determine the consistency of preferences in terms of energy consumption. In this complex system, the preferences and judgments of householders are represented by linguistic and vague patterns. This paper proposes a much better representation of this linguistics that can be developed and refined by using the evaluation methods of fuzzy set theory. The proposed approach will apply the fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (fuzzy TOPSIS) for achieving preferences. Based on our detailed literature review of the multi-agent system approach in this field, it is expected that the proposal model will offer a robust tool for communication and decision-making between occupant agents and dynamic environmental variables. It is shown that the proposed fuzzy TOPSIS approach will enable and assist householders to maximize their participation in demand response programs

Demand Response Strategy Based on Reinforcement Learning and Fuzzy Reasoning for Home Energy Management

As energy demand continues to increase, demand response (DR) programs in the electricity distribution grid are gaining momentum and their adoption is set to grow gradually over the years ahead. Demand response schemes seek to incentivise consumers to use green energy and reduce their electricity usage during peak periods which helps support grid balancing of supply-demand and generate revenue by selling surplus of energy back to the grid. This paper proposes an effective energy management system for residential demand response using Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Fuzzy Reasoning (FR). RL is considered as a model-free control strategy which learns from the interaction with its environment by performing actions and evaluating the results. The proposed algorithm considers human preference by directly integrating user feedback into its control logic using fuzzy reasoning as reward functions. Q-learning, a RL strategy based on a reward mechanism, is used to make optimal decisions to schedule the operation of smart home appliances by shifting controllable appliances from peak periods, when electricity prices are high, to off-peak hours, when electricity prices are lower without affecting the customer’s preferences. The proposed approach works with a single agent to control 14 household appliances and uses a reduced number of state-action pairs and fuzzy logic for rewards functions to evaluate an action taken for a certain state. The simulation results show that the proposed appliances scheduling approach can smooth the power consumption profile and minimise the electricity cost while considering user’s preferences, user’s feedbacks on each action taken and his/her preference settings. A user-interface is developed in MATLAB/Simulink for the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) to demonstrate the proposed DR scheme. The simulation tool includes features such as smart appliances, electricity pricing signals, smart meters, solar photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage, electric vehicle and grid supply.Peer reviewe

Urban management revolution: intelligent management systems for ubiquitous cities

    Get PDF
A successful urban management support system requires an integrated approach. This integration includes bringing together economic, socio-cultural and urban development with a well orchestrated transparent and open decision making mechanism. The paper emphasises the importance of integrated urban management to better tackle the climate change, and to achieve sustainable urban development and sound urban growth management. This paper introduces recent approaches on urban management systems, such as intelligent urban management systems, that are suitable for ubiquitous cities. The paper discusses the essential role of online collaborative decision making in urban and infrastructure planning, development and management, and advocates transparent, fully democratic and participatory mechanisms for an effective urban management system that is particularly suitable for ubiquitous cities. This paper also sheds light on some of the unclear processes of urban management of ubiquitous cities and online collaborative decision making, and reveals the key benefits of integrated and participatory mechanisms in successfully constructing sustainable ubiquitous cities

Smart Home and Artificial Intelligence as Environment for the Implementation of New Technologies

The technologies of a smart home and artificial intelligence (AI) are now inextricably linked. The perception and consideration of these technologies as a single system will make it possible to significantly simplify the approach to their study, design and implementation. The introduction of AI in managing the infrastructure of a smart home is a process of irreversible close future at the level with personal assistants and autopilots. It is extremely important to standardize, create and follow the typical models of information gathering and device management in a smart home, which should lead in the future to create a data analysis model and decision making through the software implementation of a specialized AI. AI techniques such as multi-agent systems, neural networks, fuzzy logic will form the basis for the functioning of a smart home in the future. The problems of diversity of data and models and the absence of centralized popular team decisions in this area significantly slow down further development. A big problem is a low percentage of open source data and code in the smart home and the AI when the research results are mostly unpublished and difficult to reproduce and implement independently. The proposed ways of finding solutions to models and standards can significantly accelerate the development of specialized AIs to manage a smart home and create an environment for the emergence of native innovative solutions based on analysis of data from sensors collected by monitoring systems of smart home. Particular attention should be paid to the search for resource savings and the profit from surpluses that will push for the development of these technologies and the transition from a level of prospect to technology exchange and the acquisition of benefits. The technologies of a smart home and artificial intelligence (AI) are now inextricably linked.
