Towards a Unifying Process Framework for Services Knowledge Management
Activities concerned with the design, planning and execution of services are becoming increasingly complex. This is due to the involvement of many different stakeholders, the complexity of the service systems themselves, and the dynamic nature of their organizational and ICT environments. Service knowledge management helps share and reuse relevant knowledge among the different stakeholders, and therefore emerges as a critical factor to perform service activities with required efficiency and quality. Recent advances in knowledge management provide promising opportunities to support individual service activities within a single domain. Yet, sharing knowledge throughout the service life-cycle and across service domains is still very challenging. The source of service knowledge, its usage, update frequency, encoding and associated stakeholders may vary depending upon the service activity and the service domain. Based on a critical analysis of currently proposed frameworks, we argue that a process framework approach is beneficial for service knowledge management. To support our claim, we offer an abstract template and a typical service life-cycle that can be adopted to integrate heterogeneous service knowledge from diverse sources
Alexandria: Extensible Framework for Rapid Exploration of Social Media
The Alexandria system under development at IBM Research provides an
extensible framework and platform for supporting a variety of big-data
analytics and visualizations. The system is currently focused on enabling rapid
exploration of text-based social media data. The system provides tools to help
with constructing "domain models" (i.e., families of keywords and extractors to
enable focus on tweets and other social media documents relevant to a project),
to rapidly extract and segment the relevant social media and its authors, to
apply further analytics (such as finding trends and anomalous terms), and
visualizing the results. The system architecture is centered around a variety
of REST-based service APIs to enable flexible orchestration of the system
capabilities; these are especially useful to support knowledge-worker driven
iterative exploration of social phenomena. The architecture also enables rapid
integration of Alexandria capabilities with other social media analytics
system, as has been demonstrated through an integration with IBM Research's
SystemG. This paper describes a prototypical usage scenario for Alexandria,

Improving lifecycle query in integrated toolchains using linked data and MQTT-based data warehousing
The development of increasingly complex IoT systems requires large
engineering environments. These environments generally consist of tools from
different vendors and are not necessarily integrated well with each other. In
order to automate various analyses, queries across resources from multiple
tools have to be executed in parallel to the engineering activities. In this
paper, we identify the necessary requirements on such a query capability and
evaluate different architectures according to these requirements. We propose an
improved lifecycle query architecture, which builds upon the existing Tracked
Resource Set (TRS) protocol, and complements it with the MQTT messaging
protocol in order to allow the data in the warehouse to be kept updated in
real-time. As part of the case study focusing on the development of an IoT
automated warehouse, this architecture was implemented for a toolchain

Information Systems Skills Differences between High-Wage and Low-Wage Regions: Implications for Global Sourcing
Developing Information Systems (IS) skills for a companyâs workforce has always been challenging, but global sourcing growth has caused the determination of needed IS skills to be more complex. The increased use of outsourcing to an IS service provider and from high-wage regions to low-wage regions has affected what IS skills are required globally and how to distribute the workforce to meet these needs. To understand what skills are needed in locations that seek and those that provide outsourcing, we surveyed IS service provider managers in global locations. Results from 126 reporting units provide empirical evidence that provider units in low-wage regions value technical skills more than those in high-wage regions. Despite the emphasis on commodity skills in low-wage areas, high- and low-wage providers value project management skills. Low-wage regions note global and virtual teamwork more than high-wage regions do. The mix of skills and the variation by region have implications for domestic and offshore sourcing. Service providers can vary their staffing models in global regions which has consequences for recruiting, corporate training, and curriculum
