    Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Metrology Model (CPM3) for Sculptured Surfaces - Turbine Blade Application

    Cyber-Physical Manufacturing (CPM) and digital manufacturing represent the key elements for implementation of Industry 4.0 framework. Worldwide, Industry 4.0 becomes national research strategy in the field of engineering for the following ten years. The International Conference USA-EU-Far East-Serbia Manufacturing Summit was held from 31st May to 2nd June 2016 in Belgrade, Serbia. The result of the conference was the development of Industry 4.0 Model for Serbia as a framework for New Industrial Policy - Horizon 2020/2030. Implementation of CPM in manufacturing systems generates " smart factory". Products, resources, and processes within smart factory are realized and controlled through CPM model. This leads to significant advantages with respect to high product/process quality, real-time applications, savings in resources consumption, as well as, lower costs in comparison with classical manufacturing systems. Smart factory is designed in accordance with sustainable and service-oriented best business practices/models. It is based on optimization, flexibility, self-adaptability and learning, fault tolerance, and risk management. Complete manufacturing digitalization and digital factory are the key elements of Industry 4.0 Program. In collaborative research, which we carry out in the field of quality control and manufacturing metrology at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Serbia and at Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas, Austin in USA, three research areas are defined: (a) Digital manufacturing - towards Cloud Manufacturing Systems (as a basis for CPS), in which quality and metrology represent integral parts of process optimization based on Taguchi model, and (sic) Cyber-Physical Quality Model (CPQM) - our approach, in which we have developed and tested intelligent model for prismatic parts inspection planning on CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine). The third research area directs our efforts to the development of framework for Cyber-Physical Manufacturing Metrology Model (CPM3). CPM3 framework will be based on integration of digital product metrology information through metrology features recognition, and generation of global/local inspection plan for free-form surfaces; we will illustrate our approach using turbine blade example.     A digital twin framework for predictive maintenance in industry 4.0

    The rapid advancements in manufacturing technologies are transforming the current industrial landscape through Industry 4.0, which refers not only to the integration of information technology with industrial production, but also to the use of innovative technologies and novel data management approaches. The target is to enable the manufacturers and the entire supply chain to save time, boost productivity, reduce waste and costs, and respond flexibly and efficiently to consumers’ requirements. Industry 4.0 moves the digitization of manufacturing components and processes a step further by creating smart factories. Within this context, one of the key enabling technologies for Industry 4.0 is the adoption and integration of the Digital Twin (DT). However, most of the DT solutions provided by the current leading vendors are in fact digital models or digital shadows, and not digital twins. This is due to the fact that there is no common understanding of the definition of the DT amongst the leading vendors, and its usage is slightly different but showcased under the same umbrella of DT. In this paper, a DT framework is proposed that replicates the processes of a real production line for product assembly using the Festo Cyber Physical Factory for Industry 4.0 located at Middlesex University. Moreover, the paper introduces a viable framework for interlinking the physical system with its digital instance in order to offer extended predictive maintenance services and form a fully integrated digital twin solution

    Discrete event simulation and virtual reality use in industry: new opportunities and future trends

    This paper reviews the area of combined discrete event simulation (DES) and virtual reality (VR) use within industry. While establishing a state of the art for progress in this area, this paper makes the case for VR DES as the vehicle of choice for complex data analysis through interactive simulation models, highlighting both its advantages and current limitations. This paper reviews active research topics such as VR and DES real-time integration, communication protocols, system design considerations, model validation, and applications of VR and DES. While summarizing future research directions for this technology combination, the case is made for smart factory adoption of VR DES as a new platform for scenario testing and decision making. It is put that in order for VR DES to fully meet the visualization requirements of both Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet visions of digital manufacturing, further research is required in the areas of lower latency image processing, DES delivery as a service, gesture recognition for VR DES interaction, and linkage of DES to real-time data streams and Big Data sets

Deindustrialization of the cities and struggles with its consequences are one of the fundamental economic problems in current global economy.     Active learning based laboratory towards engineering education 4.0

    Universities have a relevant and essential key role to ensure knowledge and development of competencies in the current fourth industrial revolution called Industry 4.0. The Industry 4.0 promotes a set of digital technologies to allow the convergence between the information technology and the operation technology towards smarter factories. Under such new framework, multiple initiatives are being carried out worldwide as response of such evolution, particularly, from the engineering education point of view. In this regard, this paper introduces the initiative that is being carried out at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, called Industry 4.0 Technologies Laboratory, I4Tech Lab. The I4Tech laboratory represents a technological environment for the academic, research and industrial promotion of related technologies. First, in this work, some of the main aspects considered in the definition of the so called engineering education 4.0 are discussed. Next, the proposed laboratory architecture, objectives as well as considered technologies are explained.     State of the Industry 4.0 in the Andalusian food sector

    The food industry is a key issue in the economic structure of Andalusia, due to both the weight and position of this industry in the economy and its advantages and potentials. The term Industry 4.0 carries many meanings. It seeks to describe the intelligent factory, with all the processes interconnected by Internet of things (IOT). Early advances in this field have involved the incorporation of greater flexibility and individualization of the manufacturing processes. The implementation of the framework proposed by Industry 4.0. is a need for the industry in general, and for Andalusian food industry in particular, and should be seen as a great opportunity of progress for the sector. It is expected that, along with others, the food and beverage industry will be pioneer in the adoption of flexible and individualized manufacturing processes.
