    The MobyDick Project: A Mobile Heterogeneous All-IP Architecture

Cracow, Poland: 17-20 June, 2001.This paper presents the current stage of an IP-based architecture for heterogeneous environments, covering UMTS-like W-CDMA wireless access technology, wireless and wired LANs, that is being developed under the aegis of the IST Moby Dick project. This architecture treats all transmission capabilities as basic physical and data-link layers, and attempts to replace all higher-level tasks by IP-based strategies. The proposed architecture incorporates aspects of mobile-IPv6, fast handover, AAA-control, and Quality of Service. The architecture allows for an optimised control on the radio link layer resources. The Moby dick architecture is currently under refinement for implementation on field trials. The services planned for trials are data transfer and voice-over-IP.Publicad

    Wireless communications in the new millennium and third generation wireless networks

    At the end of the 20 century, and at the beginning of this one, wireless communications are making large advances. The new technologies are on the way to provide a high-speed, high-quality information exchange between handheld terminals, and information repositories. The so called 2,5 generation networks, using the techniques like the HSCSD1, GPRS2, EDGE3, and the 3r generation wireless systems will help the wireless world to reach those goals. In this thesis I will start from the first and second-generation wireless networks, and then look into the 2,5 generation and 3rd generation wireless communications more in detail. The latest advances in the wireless world are the main focus of this paper although a short history of wireless communications is also given. The various aspects related to 3rd generation systems will be explored in this thesis, for example the air interface discussions, its time scale, its elements like the mobile equipment, software and security, USLM4, services that will be offered, etc. In addition, the technical factors and key technologies that are likely to shape the wireless network environment of the future will be explored. This part is expected to help us to see beyond the 3rd generation

    Open source integration to mobile network

    The subject of this thesis was to implement application integrating to the mobile network by using open source development tools and libraries. Chosen application was Short Message Service Center (SMSC) to prove that all related protocol layers can be implemented. Related specifications and service descriptions were investigated and needed open source software evaluated for the implementation. Application was tested in a real mobile network. As a result of testing the conclusion was that protocol layers and service functionalities can be fully implemented using open source software

    Evaluation of a Set of TCP Features over Narrowband Radio Bearer for Train Communication

    An engineering approach to the evaluation of the TCP as a narrowband bearer for short messages in the low latency train-trackside communication scenario is described in this report. The project was developed in cooperation with Bombardier Transportation Sweden AB as a part of the “ETCS over GPRS” venture. With the increase of the demands from the railway industry, the currently used circuit-switched GSM-R technology becomes unsatisfactory from the radio system capacity point of view and the need of a new solution is highly required. The packet-switched GPRS solution using TCP as a suite is under research for this specific scenario. The investigated problem in this report concerns the tuning of the retransmission mechanism, which includes the TCP features TCP_RTO_MIN and TCP_KEEPALIVE. This implies the tuning of those features to be able to detect a loss of communication and to react less aggressively for the short and instantaneous changes in the network delay. This thesis work began with a preparation phase in which a broad literature analysis of the background theory was made and followed by the development of applications that realizes the traffic model. Later in the performance phase the required changes were applied on the system and finally tested in a lab. The tests have been performed using one and four pairs of client-server applications communicating over an emulated link. The TCP features were modified at two levels, the TCP_RTO_MIN by a kernel recompilation and the TCP_KEEPALIVE by changes on the live system. Results from the tests have shown that for the higher than the default value of the TCP_RTO_MIN the less retransmissions were triggered. The TCP_KEEPALIVE has proven to be a sufficient feature to indicate a loss of the link. However the achieved improvement in performance was not as high as expected, but acceptable for this scenario. The train-trackside communication system could benefit from the proposed changes

    Uninterrupted electric power distribution is vital for modern society. One of the key components is electric power stations and distribution systems. SCADA systems are used for controlling the power stations. SCADA systems have traditionally used propriety communication networks. For added electrical power station security, a video surveillance is required. Current telecommunication networks used for SCADA systems don't support speeds required for real time video. A standard Internet connection does not offer required reliability and security for SCADA communications. Multi-Agency Cooperation In Cross-border Operations (MACICO) project aims to produce a new way of combining multiple telecommunication channels, such as TETRA, satellite and 2G/3G/4G networks. A certain target is to create a single redundant secure and faster data transfer path for SCADA and video surveillance systems. In Finland there is a project starting utilizing new technologies for data transfer thus demonstrating usability and reliability of this new communication method

    Protocol security for third generation telecommunication systems

    In this thesis, a novel protocol stack architecture is presented. The Future Core Networks System (FCNS) forms a secure reference model for use in packet-switched structures, with its applicability ranging from computer to telecommunication networks. An insight on currently used network protocol systems is given, analysing standardised sets of communication rules with respect to the security they afford to the messages exchanged. The lack of protection schemes for the internal protocol stack messages and the implementation pitfalls of their security architectures are described, in relation to the effects they have on the communication process. The OSI security model is also considered, with disadvantages identified in the placement of security functionality and its management. The drawbacks depicted for currently used systems form the motivation behind this work. The analysis of the FCNS follows, which is composed of three parts. In the first part, the FCNS communication layers are examined, with respect to the mechanisms used to establish, maintain and tear down a connection between peer entities. In the second part, the security mechanisms of the proposed reference architecture are given, including details on the FCNS keystream generator used for the security of the internal FCNS messages. Finally, the FCNS Error Protocol is depicted, illustrating the modes of operation and advantages it exhibits over currently used systems. The work then moves into presenting details of the software FCNS implementation, followed by the presentation of the results and measurements obtained by the case studies created. Comparisons are given in relation to the TCP/IP suite, to provide the means of identifying the FCNS applicability in various network environments. The work is concluded by presenting the FCNS functionality in delivering information for the UMTS, together with further work that may enhance the flexibility and use of the proposed architecture
